Letter U returns
When G watches C get torn to his death, his eyes tear up. However, letters can only cry gems, and he does not do so here.
When F used the colon to conjoin T, A and M, the gem conjoins all 3 of them. However, he is seen with it inside his body still in the scene where P and F fight.
The tear didn't fall from his face though. Also, F cloned the colon.

I have a wild theory. What if F and V had a very close relationship (because they both represent the labiodental fricative) but something happened to V that caused F to go insane. Now he's collecting the letters necessary to spell "friend" to try and bring V back. I'm probably way off here, but I thought this was an interesting theory.
