    *THIS IS NOT A SPONSORED VIDEO* - The box was an birthday gift to me from a family member.
    I understand from various comments that people have experienced trouble with subscriptions to this company (including problems cancelling their subscription), I make no recommendations about this subscription box service - in fact the only thing I will recommend is that you look up some customer reviews on the service itself.
    *Afterthoughts & Addenda* I recorded this video over a month prior to publication (by which time I have actually tasted most of the items in the box) - here are my brief impressions (in the order of unboxing) with comparisons to UK products where appropriate:
    Cheddar & Sour Cream - I've not had exactly this combination of flavours in crisps in the UK before, but the sour cream flavour was familiar. They are more highly flavoured and salted than typical UK crisps.
    Doritos spicy sweet chilli - nice, similar to hot Doritos we can get in the UK, but again, seemed heavier on the flavourings
    Herr's Honey Cheese Curls - like sweet Wotsits, again, more salty and more flavour coating than Wotsits
    Cheez-its white cheddar - interestingly tangy little cheese crackers
    Cheetos flamin hot - almost identical to UK Nik Naks (which used to be available in cheese flavour). A little spicy, but not much.
    A&W Rootbeer - haven't opened this yet. I like rootbeer occasionally even though it tends to taste a bit medicinal to the typical UK palate
    Smartfood white cheddar popcorn - cheesy popcorn - again, a sort of tangy cheese flavour I haven't encountered in UK packet snacks
    Chex Mix - All of the components of this are familiar, but the idea of eating them together is not - a blend of breakfast cereal (specifically, what we might call shreddies) together with little pretzel things, savoury puffs and other crunchy snack things
    Pop Tarts Bites - dry crumbly cookie with frosting - I didn't really enjoy these - a bit too blandly, dryly sweet
    3 Musketeers - soft nougat with chocolate coating - like a UK Milky Way, but with a the flavour profile of US chocolate
    Lemonheads pink lemonade - fondant candy, moderately sour - not much else to say
    Kit Kat Duo - Kit Kat with that American chocolate flavour, and a hint of mint (mint was pretty subtle)
    Reese's Outrageous - this was one of my favourite items - peanut butter with crispy candy coated chocolate bits inside a caramel and chocolate coating - sort of like a StarBar with mini smarties inside
    Goldfish cheddar crackers - I found these disappointingly lacking in flavour - just very slightly cheesy, underseasoned water biscuits
    Combos pizzeria stuffed pretzels - pretty good - sort of pretzel nuggets with a pleasant cheesy-herby pizza flavour filling.
    Hershey's Swiss Rolls - More dense cake than a Cadbury's Mini Roll. Much thicker chocolate too - and of course, with the US flavour profile. Very, very sweet.
    M&M's Fudge Brownie - little doughy, cakey chocolate nuggets in candy shells - I thought these were really good
    Little Debbie Double Decker Oatmeal Creme Pie - (tasted in the video) - extremely sweet, soft cookie sandwich with a sort of sugar paste filling. I needed a big cup of unsweetened black coffee with the remainder of this.
    Nutter Butter cookies - these were good - a bit like gingerbread, but without the ginger, and peanut flavour instead
    Charleston Chew - chewy nougat with a thin chocolate coating - very sweet, sort of artificial tasting - more chewy, and at the same time, less substantial than UK pink and white nougat bars
    Nerds Gummy Clusters - jelly sweets encrusted with little candy beads - different fruit flavours from typical UK confectionery, which made these taste interesting to me.
    Jolly Rancher gummies - fairly ordinary jelly sweets in very lurid colours and fairly ordinary flavours (albeit different fruits from typical UK sweets)
    Tootsie Roll Pop - Couldn't taste this as it was one with its own wrapper - I could not separate it from its packaging
    Cinnamon Toast Crunch - similar to a UK breakfast cereal called Curiously Cinnamon, but very, very much sweeter. Absurdly sweet for a breakfast cereal, compared to my experience of things here.

    • @AtomicShrimp
      @AtomicShrimp  3 года назад +75

      Or the short version:
      Many of the sweet items were very much sweeter than their UK counterparts
      American chocolate tastes different - to me, not exactly unpleasant, but different enough that I prefer our own.
      The difference in flavours often maps to a perception of 'artificial' - I wonder if the same thing happens when people from the US try UK confectionery.
      Many of the savoury things were more salty than their UK counterparts.
      Some of the cheese flavours were different and interesting - I wish we had them within our own product ranges for variety.
      Oh, and weirdly, the plastic film used for the packaging bags for these snack items was generally thicker and tougher than we get on similar snacks here.

    • @jafizzle95
      @jafizzle95 3 года назад +14

      It seemed a pretty fair representation of US junk food. Definitely something they would have bought in bulk for big savings. I don't know what they charge for one of these boxes but I can imagine they're making a pretty hefty margin.

    • @kirareich1776
      @kirareich1776 3 года назад +9

      To be fair anything in the box has to at least be semi-non-perishable, and also qualify as a small snack. In America the only things that really fit under that description are things you would find in a convenience store, but by that logic you could also still find them at a supermarket. I guess if you wanted to go down a healthier route there could have maybe been a granola bar or fruit leather in the box.

  • @jafizzle95
    @jafizzle95 3 года назад +9

    The oatmeal cream pie is definitely my favorite out of all of the snacks represented in that box. I'd say it's mostly for nostalgia. My grandfather used to take me hunting when I was a kid and he'd always pack a snack, and usually it was oatmeal cream pies. He'd always put them in his back pocket, so they'd be flattened by the time we ate them. He would tell me they taste better that way. Still to this day, I always flatten my oatmeal cream pie. Don't know if it actually makes a difference because I haven't eaten a non-flattened one in nearly 2 decades now :)
    The ones we had were the regular size: 2 smaller oatmeal cookies with the "cream" filling in the middle.

    I'm from the states, so this (and the pinned comment) is very interesting! I've seen and tried most of these, but a few like the Nerds clusters I've never had - I've only had original Nerds. Chex Mix is probably my favorite thing here and I quite like it, though I don't find myself buying bagged snack food all that often. This feels like a fairly accurate encapsulation of American junk food (with a few that are uncommon, or less popular variants on a more popular brand. Jolly Ranchers for example are primarily thought of as a hard candy brand I would say.) I think corn nuts would be a really interesting reaction. They aren't from the U.S., they originated in South America, but they seem like the sort of thing that wouldn't be available in the U.K. They're available in many convenience stores here. I think that Tootsie Rolls and Necco Wafers are, if not the most popular, two fairly unique sorts of candy found here in the U.S. I'm not a huge fan of Tootsie Rolls, but Necco Wafers are a chalky disk shaped candy that I have a lot of nostalgia for. (When I look both of them up with the text "UK" the first result is an American import store, so I can only assume they can't be found over there.)
    I appreciate the generosity you grant some of our foods, haha. I still enjoy Hershey's somewhat, especially for smores, but if offered a choice, I'd never pick a standard Hershey's over a European milk chocolate bar.

    It's interesting as an American to see someone else trying our snacks from a foreign point of view. I'm glad you like the outrageous bar, that's one of my favorites along with Cheddar & Sour Cream Ruffles.
    I've always found the whole "root beer tasting medicinal" thing a bit strange. It never occurred to me that it tasted like that. I have a similar reaction to grape soda, though. I used to have grape-flavored cold medicine and so I'm reminded of that whenever I taste any grape flavor.

    • @AtomicShrimp
      @AtomicShrimp  3 года назад +1

      I find grape soda (and grape flavoured things in general) to taste as though they are really artificial. Or I did, until I tried Welch's Purple Grape Juice - and realised that there are grapes (concord) that actually have that strong floral note to them quite naturally.
      On the root beer thing, there's a type of antiseptic here called TCP - not sure if you have it, but it's basically an aqueous solution of phenol (carbolic acid) - it has a very distinctive smell, of which rootbeer is strangely reminiscent. I don't think there is any chemical similarity, just a perception of similar aromas

    Hi there! I just wanted to mention a lil tid bit about the Charleston Chew.... if you put them in the freezer, it makes for an interesting snack. Kinda frozen so the taffy has a snap to it & makes for a different type of chew. It's an interesting experience. If you ever get the chance, give it a try 😀🖖
    PS.... i have never heard the thing about chocolate in the U.S. tasting like vomit. I have heard it was sweeter & have heard it was different, but this is the first time i have heard it compared to vomit. I wonder why some people experience it that way 🤔🤔
    Thank you & Have a Great day!! 😀🖖

    • @PoptartParasol
      @PoptartParasol 3 года назад

      Usually it is sweeter which is why it tastes like vomit. Candies like hersheys and all other popular chocolate brands contains an acid that gives vomit it's particular... unique taste. Apparently this is a taste Americans love, but europeans hate (because other chocolate companies tried to recreate the hersheys taste by adding this acid.) So they create different versions if they sell internationally.
      As far as I have read this has to do with how they process their milk.

    • @PoptartParasol
      @PoptartParasol 3 года назад

      But I honestly think it's just because it's so sweet, I just read that regulations for chocolate being even considered chocolate are stricter in britain (and subsequently europe I'm sure) than in america, with 10% or less cocoa solids being enough to be considered chocolate there compared to 20% in britain. That and sugar is overall lower etc etc.

    • @mannsjewellery
      @mannsjewellery 3 года назад +1

      Because chocolate in America is made from sour milk and they add a chemicle that is closely related to a chemicle in stomach acid so it gives it a vomit taste

    As an American, it seems most of that ended up in my trick or treat bag on Halloween growing up. Lol yes we love our salt and sugar, but a lot of these you still see everyday. The cereal aisle alone takes up both sides in bigger grocery stores. I now occasionally buy some of these items as a treat. Love chocolate peanut butter anything. But I’m careful now ( calories , health), I sometimes can’t believe I ate all that sugar as a child, as well as most of my friends lol. Enjoy!! It looked wonderful. Much continued support. 😃

    Plenty of other Americans have said this already, but I think this is very accurate to American snack food. I could find nearly all of these items at the nearest convenience store, and at least half of them in any given vending machine.
    A few things are a bit more obscure, like the mint kitkats, the brownie M&Ms, the pink lemonade candy, or the Nerds things. However, you can very easily find the “default” versions of those just about anywhere that sells junk food (plain chocolate kitkats, bags of m&ms, prepackaged brownies, lemon-flavored lemonheads, and boxes of Nerds (the tiny hard candy bits)). Also, if the honey cheese curls and Charleston Chew are regional, then I must live in the region that has them, because those are both pretty normal to me. I’m not a fan of either one, but I see them pretty often.

    They have such colourfully designed cans (and bottles) these days and when the likes of ASDA and Tesco have a generous assortment, I'd enjoy a critique of each brewery's design in your opinion. American here: Seen and tried all of these besides the honey curls. I've seen that brand "Herr's" but not that particular product. Also the Hershey's swiss roll... I've had ones by other brands, but never encountered a Hershey's one before. A couple of extra notes below:
    -Those 'Combos' pretzels come in many flavors, but those pizza ones are generally considered the most popular.
    -You're not imagining the Reese's "Nutrageous" as opposed to "Outrageous". They both exist and are slightly different, the Nutrageous has peanuts around the outside instead of the chocolate candy-coated bits.
    -The M&M's Fudge Brownie flavor is relatively new as far as I know. This year is the first time I've seen them.
    -Oatmeal Cream Pies are one of life's simple pleasures, or at least as close to one as a heavily processed and manufactured food product can be.
    -Charleston Chew is kind of uncommon to find, but I love them. If you ever get another one, try freezing it, then thwacking it on a countertop a few times to break it into pieces and enjoy while still frozen (chew carefully to avoid hurting your teeth).
    -Nutter Butters are underrated, nobody ever talks about them, but they're so good.
    -Our Milky Way bar includes a strip of caramel between the top of the nougat and the top layer of chocolate, but I have heard that the English bar of the same name is more similar to our 3 Musketeer, with no caramel strip.

      Comment above mine is accurate... but also, most Americans will agree anything savory is better when you add cheese. Even tho this had some neat stuff inside, i would've liked to see something more akin to what "Bokksu" does for Japan. Got a couple of those boxes after watching a promo on channel name "Rachel & Jun's Adventures!" and found it to be one of the more intelligently made "stuff in a box from...(insert country name)" so far.
    They (bokksu) figured out a way to find local confectioners and similar, and to promote them and their products. I actually liked it, compared to other stuff i tried because most of the stuff inside was made by a human, rather than a factory line. That, is what i kinda expected from this box, but kinda "ehhed" because it's just production line "junk food", which is almost always just a chemical reaction difference from the stuff we get here.
    I mean those kitkats, pretty sure we have one that's exactly the same, but named differently (think they put the flavor rather than "duos" on it.
