In this video I'm pouring a new concrete floor over an existing concrete floor.
If you want to know if there's anything special you have to do before pouring concrete over concrete, I show you and explain it all in the video.
My rule of thumb is: If your pouring at least 3" thick or more over your existing concrete floor, patio, slab, driveway, you don't have to bond the concrete together.
If your concrete pour is less than 3" thick, then I recommend using a bonding agent like Weld Crete to bond the two concrete slabs together.
If you're using Weld Crete, just brush it on your clean concrete, scrub it in and make sure it covers everything, wait for it to dry to touch, then pour your new concrete right over it.
If you're slab is thicker than 3", then you just pour the concrete like you would any normal slab, floor, or patio.
This is how I've been doing it for over 39 years with no problems.

These garage floor videos have answered all my questions on pouring over old garage slab
My 20x25 ish two car garage was poured in about 1970- very little cracking, no heaving or elevation changes just chipped surface and bad sloping towards the back wall.
    Thanks Mike!!

Your video just gave me a little more confidence on my decision to pour concrete over my existing garage floor. My floor is lower than the sidewalk and alley so I always have sitting water when it rains/snows. I wanted to do small rebar and raise it about 4-5 inches with high psi concrete. I was on the right track, just didn’t know if it’s something people normally do. Thank you so much! I’ll definitely look into that course.
    Best!

I have a patio that looks like the previous owners added to twice. The main portion has a low spot right near the back door, so water will sit there & in NC we get rain well into winter AND spring. The drain holes are at the end of the patio, but the water never reaches them, lol! I had asked 2 diff contractors about putting concrete over it to correct the previous DIY. Both gave diff answers, but both said you couldn't do it at all. I knew they were wrong, but I needed the technical info like this video! You're awesome! Now, I can price it out to see if it will be worth doing myself or if I should hire a concrete company. Thank you so much for sharing this!

Thank you for your video and sharing your wisdom. I have an addition on a slab, connected to a modular home. Obviously the main part of the house is about three feet higher floor level. On the West Wall of the downstairs room , we have had water issues from under the door and some of the wall. I'm not sure if any kind of wrap or seal or even liquid nails under the sill plate. We recently had a porch added on extending 12 ft out front thinking we wanted this anyway, it should take care of the problem. I noticed that the contractor I used did not grade the new slab at all and Mom the water runs towards the wall and not away from it. Now once again I have water coming under the door and wall. I'm not sure how much I can add without getting above the floor level so if it ends up being two or three inches that'd be great but I think I may only have an inch or so to play with, to be able to pour on top of the slab and correct the grade. My question is, am I looking at jackhammering out away from the rock exterior of the house, (yes rock, so it's not just cut and dried to remove the outer layer), and putting in a French drain or weeping tile, or is there another possibility? Thank you for your time. DB

    Wish you were in Oklahoma.
Do usually ask questions on YT but you obviously know what you're doing when it comes to concrete.
Had a guy pour a huge patio on a hot September day a couple of years ago. Really really bad job. Concrete was setting up inside the trucks. Ended up with dips and puddle areas all over - just looked like crap. To compound the problem had another guy sell me on a thin-coat of (???) so he could stain it - was gypped by that guy too. Now I not only have dips and puddle areas but also the surface is chipping up... Ugh!
    HELP PLEASE.
Thought about laying down 1/2-thick pavers, but after watching your video I'm think just three of inches of new concrete and having it stained.
Thank you in advance for any advice you can offer.

Greetings from a German living in Panama. I was “bombarded” from all sides to use bonding agent here in Panama. Until now, nobody could explain to me why I never did see or hear about this except for preparing a floor to put tiles on in Germany. I am building a house in Panama. I poured a “kind of prefab” 3 inch concrete ceiling on top of my 1st level. So I used a bonding agent Lanco CB610 and put a 4 inch concrete slab on top of it. Watching this video now, would have saved me $100…. Well. Now I know I was right but with the bonding agent I am okay too. That’s when you start building in a different country and nobody can explain why you need to do this. Standard answer? “That’s what we do….”

Great video! Just want to make sure my contractor is steering me in the right direction. I live in NC so the winters are mild, although we get plenty of freeze thaws. I had a 30 year old mortared brick walkway and when we removed the bricks we found a cement base that is at least 3 inches thick. The base is solid, no cracks. If we pour 3 inches of new concrete on top should we be fine? And how do you prepare the old concrete prior to the pour. Should it be pressure washed to remove all lose debris? Is wire optional or a must? Any other hints are greatly appreciated.

I absolutely Love all of your videos about concrete. I am 73 yrs of age and have an erosion project that I have planned. It is an area which the back yard is eroding into the creek and the bank has dropped approx. 3 feet in elevation and my plan is to place concrete to form a retaining wall level with the height of the lawn and let drainage spill over the wall into a concrete collection basin. At that point it is collected and routed into a 4 inch drain line which extends out over the bank to spill down into the center of the creek. The area is 20 feet wide and 8 feet in width (back up into my topsoil/grass lawn). I have purchased a Kushlan 6 cu.ft. electric mixer and re-bar for the footings which will surround the entire collection basin and plan to use galvanized cattle panel as remesh for the floor of the collection basin, with manual wiring ties to the re-bar in the retaining walls for total covering of the collection basin with steel with the marriage of #4 re-bar in the footings and the cattle panel being tied-in. Now.....my issue is that It is pretty large and since I will be doing the job solo, feel that I probably should place concrete in all of the footings using formwork, which surround the collection area, in a single day and then wait 10 to 14 days for the concrete to properly harden before going back and placing the concrete over the floor of the collection basin. My concern is whether the concrete I place 10 days later will bond to the walls/footings which have dried out by that time. I have seen you use Portland cement to get deteriorated driveways to patch and wonder if that might be the method to use for bonding, or use the bonding agent you recommend in this video? Sorry for the length of this comment, but I don't want to mess this job up. I have good handy man skills, but I am out of my league on this one.....but my yard is washing away without help.

Hey Mike...I love your videos. I have a front porch of about 5x8' that was covered by 2 X 6 treated wood. The concrete slab is really badly crumbling on top. I will have to grind and chip it down to where its solid and then pour abouut 2" over the slab and add a 14-16" (half the height of the slab) step in the front of it. I know I will need some rebar support in the step because it will be about 6" high. I will drillin to the front of the slab to insert the re-bar. I will use weld crete on the old surface. I think I will watch your training video as well. I have never really worked with concrete but I am fairly comfortable with all kinds of renovations. I have been watching your videos for months knowing I have this project ahead of me. THANKS AGAIN!!

Watch a lot of your videos. Thank you for all the education.
If your used the bonding agent first, could you dry cement the new layer? I have some old steps, 3x3 feet with four steps and want to raise them 2-3 inches.

Hey Mike, GREAT video! It looks like this may work for me. My garage floor has been cracked and settled for probably 35 years. It's cracked and settled anywhere from 2" in the center to as much as 6" around the perimeter. Kind of like large slabs broken off the center point. Can I go over this existing concrete situation? I'm also replacing the overhead door so I could pour even deeper (raise the door). What do you think? Thanks again for the video.

Hey Mike, Thanks for a great video! I have a 4" pad for a garage that never had a structure built on it. I want to expand the pad to go 3" over the old pad and make thickened edges outside of the old pad to support the structure (26'x32' with bonus room apartment on top). Old pad seems pretty stable, it has expansion joints and a couple long cracks but it is still nearly level. Does that sound doable to you if I support with re-bar and no bonding between pads?

Hey Mike, thanks for the video. It was very knowledge based. I am considering blowing out my interior wall that leads to my outside patio and turning the outside patio into the living space. I know I will need to add concrete and I was wondering if you can give any advice. The space is 13 x 7. Thank you very much in advance for taking the time to read this message.

Happy I found your channel. Learn something new. Will have to watch additional videos you posted just so I can ask the right question. I had to drill out the bathroom floor that was built on slab concrete. In Thailand they create a mud out of cement and sand with water which they lay down on concrete. They then put a mixture of cement and glue on the tile and add the same onto the mud before laying down the floor tile. A pipe (hot water pipe) leaked and destroyed the ceiling below. Now I wonder if I could add a new concrete layer on top in the bathroom? Or do I need to lay down a bonding agent? Thank you for your time.

You were enormously helpful, thank you. I have a 10 x 27 patio that is level with the dirt and the grass is constantly trying to grow over it. Additionally, the previous owners brought 10 feet of on end up, but never finished it. This has caused the newer concreat to break off in places. We want to remove the newer concrete and raise the whole pad by at least 3 inches. What is your take on that?

Thanks for the great instructional videos! Wondering what the surface looks like with embedded fibers? I'm not too crazy about little bits coming to the surface and showy a "hairy" look. Is that what happens?

Thank you. I learned a lot from your video. Looking to resurface an 88 sqft. concrete floor of a workspace added to my home. Aside from a bonding agent and fiber mesh type of concrete, what type of concrete would you recommend from a big box store? There are a lot of choices.

Excellent video and informative and confirming. Just a thought about re-doing the OHD.....if height allows, cut off the bottom of the OHD and seal off....be it wood or metal.

Hi Mike, thank you for sharing! I'm curious if you have capped floors like this on concrete driveways? We had our driveway done in 2019 and unfortunately we had a bad job done and couldn't go after the guy without losing $. Would love to know if this is something we could consider doing to help level out the 20x40 "back lot" the leads into our garage. The concrete is super unlevel and gets puddles, and in the winter, it becomes an ice rink and very unsafe for my Grandparents who walk on it.

Thanks, I was looking to get info on concrete over concrete. I smashed the like. My project is a garage similar to video. I've got 4-6" from front to back. COVID is making it hard to get contractors to the house and I need to do it myself at this point.

Mike, Perfect time for me to see this video. I have a 6x6 thin metal shed on a 2 " think concrete slab that is in good shape. I want to make it a little bigger (6x8 or 8x10) with a 4" foundation, without removing the 6x6. The new shed will be wood. Can I do this if I use Weld Crete? Thanks for the video.

Excellent Video! There are almost no resources online about concrete over concrete floors. Thank you.
I notice in this situation, the walls were raised on curbs. On would you do this in a garage where the walls go straight to the floor? Remove the walls or pour around them?
Trying to raise my carport 3.5 inches and close it in. But there is a laundry room built out there already.

Hey Mike love the video! I am going to remodel what was a 2 car garage into some extra bedrooms. There is about a 6 inch gap in floor from garage slab (in ok shape) to the finished floor of the house. The garage has cinder block walls. If I pour a slab on top of the old slab (thinking of leaving about 1 " difference so I can add a barrier then plywood for carpet) is there any risk to the new slab putting pressure on the existing cinder walls? Love the videos keep up the good work!
