    I bought one of those (the Solo) a couple of weeks ago. I'm also fairly used to making and uploading youtube videos. Hi Steve, i cannot thank you enough for the super simple way of showing the signal path through the channel strip and the subsequent 'crossroad' to either DAW or on to the effects inserts using the example of the UAD REC or UAD MON selection. I kind of jumped from the era of using a simple sound card (Focusrite Saffire) to Arrow and routing is not my cup of coffee. I'm a Logic Pro X user and I (and probably a ton of other viewers) would greatly appreciate if you could do a basic signal path / routing / plug-in usage video.... I've see most of them on YT already but your way of explaining makes it more digestable for me. My other question (or maybe it's just an extension of the first one) is how to take advantage of the best of both worlds in terms of effects - ie UAD's and Logic's plug-ins. To be more specific: let's say i want to simultaneously take advantage of UAD's built-in mic pre-amps and some guitar modeling inserts and some of Logic's plug-ins as well. How should I route the signal and set the monitoring? (i want to hear Logic's software monitoring so that i have a realtime sense of its plug-ins while playing). Don't know if i'm formulating the question correctly. anyway , massive thanks!

    • @TheSteveKinney
      @TheSteveKinney  3 года назад +2

      Great great questions!
      I can definitely do a video on this.
      To clarify, do you mean, make a video on some overall signal chains that are commonly used? For say, vocals?
      I got you on the second part of your question, and before I even make a video.... load up the Raw Pro Distortion pedal on a unison... Crank the volume, pull the Gain down to just above 0... have fun with the tone knob... and run it into the front of whatever amp sim you use on Logic.. thank me later. lol
      I'll make a video on using both setups soon, but I wanna make sure I understand your first part of your question.
      Thanks so much for the feedback!
      cheers,
      Steve

    Nice video, Steve - question for you - I'm using Pro Tools, and sometimes I need to use plugins that are not UAD plugins (such as STL Tones for guitar). In that case, I HAVE to use the input on Pro Tools with that plugin. However, we're supposed to turn on Low Latency Monitoring on Pro Tools when using the UAD console. But, in doing that then there's enough delay to make you want to throw your system out the window (depending upon channel load, of course). But I can't help but thinking that there's GOTTA be a way to somehow ROUTE it through to virtual channels (perhaps?) to still get the plugin from ProTools input channel, while enjoying the "latency free"-ness of the Apollo.. have you ever done this?

      They are super similar if you digest the technical specs in the manual.
      Both are great. RME is a little more windows OS friendly.
      The Apollo is technically the winner by a literal 1db of dynamic range. In other words - they are basically identical in quality. You’d never hear a difference between the two.
      Both are going to be outstanding.

    • @TheSteveKinney
      @TheSteveKinney  Год назад

      The solo is easily enough.
      It might even be a little “too” much.
      For voice over stuff, you really just need a great preamp, great ad/da converters a good mic or two depending on what the work calls for.
      All of which the solo is - but it’s also got all the music plugins and emulations that you will probably not really ever use.
      It’s like getting a farrari. It’s awesome, but unless you take it to a track to race, you don’t ever really get to open it up.
      Either way, it’s a great device!

    Awesome! Subscribed! Steve, I want to buy the Apollo Solo, but a lot of people say that it's not Good or WORTH if you don't have a Thunderbolt 3 Mac... That's why I want the Thunderbolt 3 version.
    The thing is that I have a MacBook Pro Mid-2012... but I may be able to upgrade to a newer Mac within 1 year or so, if everything goes well.
    So if I buy the Apollo THB3 version, would I be able to use it with my Mid-2012 MacBook Pro somehow?

    • @TheSteveKinney
      @TheSteveKinney  3 года назад +2

      Thanks SO much for the sub! That means so much.
      To answer your question in short, yes, there would technically be a way to do it. Although it would add some extra cost.
      You see, the device, technically would transmit data down an adapter cable, but the adapter cable doesn't provide enough power to bus power the device.
      SO. you'd need a thunderbolt 2 > thunderbolt 3 adapter, THEN you'd need some sort of powered thunderbolt 3 dock. then you could plug the solo into it.
      From what I understand, that would work.
      What I would recommend is that if you're thinking about upgrading - look into the 2018-2020 15" and 16" MacBook Pros - may be able to save some money that route.
      The new M1 Big Sur Macs are super weird, and a lot of software doesn't support it just yet. It's crazy powerful, yes, but intrusive into your privacy. So I'm not sold on them yet.
      Something to think about also - you might be able to pick up the Solo USB - used, as a starter setup. This would get you the sounds you'd like. Any plugins you buy now - would obviously transfer over to any upgrades. Then when you move up to a new machine, you could also eventually upgrade into a thunderbolt 3 device AND have the solo for travel setups, or resell it. Lowering the cost overall of your initial investment.
      Alternatively, you CAN use thunderbolt 2 Apollo's with thunderbolt 3 adapters. So, you may be able to find a cheaper used Apollo Twin. Not a bad route either. And remember, you can always resell too.
      Hopefully that helps narrow it down a bit more. Either way, whatever Apollo you go with - you won't be disappointed with the sounds that you can get from it. You HAVE to get one if you're serious about making some sounds!
      Cheers,
      Steve

      Fantastic question.
      Technically, TB2 has the bandwidth to support it, but cannot provide the bus power to power the thunderbolt version.

    • @TheSteveKinney
      @TheSteveKinney  3 года назад

      Yeah, the solo would certainly be a great option.
      No issues with running any of the unison preamp plugins. And you can have processing on top of that too.
      If you have any outboard gear that you’re trying to incorporate, the twin might be a better route because of the extra stereo outs that you could use to loop sounds.
      Either one will work real well for just vocals or a single channel.

      Most of what the Apollo’s offer, and a lot of their price is wrapped up with the plugins that they bundle with it.
      While you’d likely want to use some of them for voice over, most wouldn’t be necessary.
      You could likely find an Apollo solo used and then wait for a sale and get a few specific plugins that might be helpful.
      Definitely will want fab filter. Definitely will want some sort of de-esser.
      For the radio sound, you’ll want either an sm7b or re-20
      And then for the studio voice over sound you could go with a number of different mics. Too many to list.

      Go to uadforum.com

      😎👍🏻
      Generally speaking. You can build full chains for tracking.

    • @TheSteveKinney
      @TheSteveKinney  3 года назад +1

      Yeah, absolutely. That's kind of tricky topic that can get confusing.
      In short, you want your signals to kind of average around -18dB to -12dB. and your peaks shouldn't be peaking above -6dB every single time. It's alright to have one or two random ones higher.
      And of course, if you clip your signal, gotta turn that bad boy down.
      But how you get there is where the magic starts to happen. A lot of creative choice can go into that. For example, it might be a creative choice to have the mic pre clipping, but the signal in that sweet spot.
      I'd be happy to make a video on it. Hopefully, that gives you some insight in the meantime.

And so when I take the video files into Adobe Premeire, all tracks are recorded all at once. But for my stream, I'd only use the Master Mix composed of the wet mic mix, game audio and music only.

      @@angelinagargano3940 Hey there, that's a great mic!
      If you're room you're recording in is treated nicely and is quite dead in terms of reverb, I'd make sure your shield is a bit further off the mic to make sure you don't get standing waves.
      I'd also sing at about 4-6" off. Use the High pass filter of the mic.
      As far as processing - it might be where you're signal is too clean - This is where the UA stuff comes into play. The emulations of the famous mic pre's can get you a bit of drive and character into the signal.
      Reverb's are all a choice. But a nice one always helps.
      Overall - doesn't sound like you're doing any thing that particularly needs to be changed.
      All I can tell you is that a lot of your warmth really comes from that area of 200 herts.. which is also where the muddiness can come from - so maybe be a bit gentler with roll off in terms of the "q" or the slope of the roll off. that might help quite a bit.
      Then also - try de-essing to taste as that can tame that high end "sharpness" that makes something not feel warm.

Since it's just me, I was wondering if there's a way to record the 4 drums tracks and then listen back but change the UA preamps so I can compare and/or change the default settings on the pre's? I'm still in demo mode trying to decide which UA plug-ins to buy. Currently, I'm using the Logic phone app to start and stop recording while at the kit and then changing the pre's before I record again then listening to all of the takes. That however doesn't allow for tweaking the defaults to see what sounds best. I'm sure this is rudimentary stuff but that's where I am. Thanks for any info.

      That’s a great question!
      I think there isn’t really all too much of a work around here.
      If it were me, to really A/B the different mics - what I’d do in that scenario is set up a simple groove with a simple fill - and play it to a click for 4 measures.
      Record the different passes for all the different mic pres you’re choosing from and then create a comp at the start of every new measure so when you hit play - It swaps out in real time as you’re listening.
      I’d say you’d just have to also include tweaks as you go and as you’d like.
      Outside of just old school going back any forth.
      That said - there is an iPad app that allows you to mirror and control your computer wirelessly with touch settings.
      Might be able to play around on the fly with that. Just a thought.

    So what exactly is the diffrence between loading something via insert and loading via unison? I have been strictly using preamps there, the marshall amp seems interesting.

    • @TheSteveKinney
      @TheSteveKinney  3 года назад

      Unison Enabled Plugins (Listed on UA's website), when loaded in that slot - are directly interacting with the HARDware, of your interface. Specifically with regard to your Mic Preamps, when using the Neve preamp plugins for example - the hardwares Impedance changes to match what the modeled hardware would have been.
      This is the same for the Marshall amp for example, the Hi-Z input's impedance now switches specifically to what the Marshall Amps impedance would be.. .this changes the physical resistance of electricity of your Mic or Guitar, etc. Now the guitar or mic is essentially reacting the same way it would be as if it were plugged into the real hardware.... and then of course, the Preamp's Gain Stages themselves have been modeled too. So as you gain up the plugin, the gain is changing and reacting accurately as well.
      This is a million times more accurate than say using a Focusrite interface and dropping a Plugin in post.
      I equate it to using an iPhone camera and then using their background blur feature vs using a real camera with a real shallow depth of field. While the software in and of itself is believable - doesn't come close to the feel of real hardware or the nuance a real lens....
      Hopefully that made sense! Cheers!

    can you use the rear output on the solo as a second headphone mix using headphone amps? One headphone for a vocalist and the other for the producer.

    • @TheSteveKinney
      @TheSteveKinney  3 года назад

      Yes, technically you could.
      There are ultimately two ways to do this.
      The simpler way is to have some sort of headphone, or signal distribution device. Where it would essentially take the output out the back and split it into two sends.
      This way, one could be sent to a headphone amp, and then the other could go to a speakers amp.
      While you build the headphone mix that comes out of the backside outputs, you'd have to understand that it would also go to your main output for the time being.
      and if you need to mute the monitors, you would have to mute it at the monitors amp, rather than from the Apollo, since this would also mute that headphone signal.
      Then from there, the other headphone output on the front could act as normal.
      It is KEY, to understand that you'd have to figure out how to build "alternate" mixes in your DAW, so that you could recall the headphone mix.
      An easy way to do this is build the mix via prefacer bus sends, and then use the Bus as the source for the mix. For the master bus at this point, you'd have to Mute it! That way you don't duplicate signals being sent to that primary output.
      Then you'd build this similar bus mix for the other headphone output. Add a bus, build the mix prefader.
      THEN when you're ready to actually mix- Mute the bus sends, and then Unmute the master bus so you head the actual mix.
      Much simpler to understand once you get the hang of it. But definitely possible and feasible.
      thanks for the comment! Cheers mate!

    • @TheSteveKinney
      @TheSteveKinney  3 года назад +2

      Absolutely! You’d wanna add an instance of a UAD plugin inside your daw like you normally would with any other plugin.
      If you wanna save dsp, To print those you have to bounce the track, or commit the track to audio. Most DAWs have this function. I have a brief example of this in logic in another video on how to save dsp.

      Hey There!
      Thanks so much for your comment! This got me curious since I don't have autotune, and use Melodyne.
      I got the trial versions of all three UAD autotunes available to try out different combinations.
      What I've found is that it is heavily dependent on what type of Preamp & Reverb you're using.
      Neve pre's are really resource hungry, so are reverbs.
      However, I was able to build a nice chain.
      Neve 1084, Autotune, La-2A Silver, PurePlate verb.
      I also was able to do the Glaxy tape echo which has a cool spring reverb sound in it.
      What I also found was that if I used the "legacy" compressors - I could save some extra resource to utilize different verbs like the Lexicon 224.
      Finally, other pre's like the API vision channel strip, or the V76 - worked like a charm since they are less DSP heavy. They also sound great! Especially for vocals.
      The API has the added benefit of having compression built into it. So you're saving there too if you'd like. This is similar to the SSL 4000, or the Century Tube Channel Strip.
      Pretty cool man!
      What won't work is the Capitol chambers. That damn thing is as heavy as Jabba the hut.
      Cheers man!

    One area that I'm still trying to sort out, is the role of inserts on the Console vs within LUNA. If I want to burn the effect to the audio track in LUNA, then it seems it must go on the Console and using UAD Rec. However, if I UAD Mon maybe it technically makes no difference if the insert is in the Console or LUNA??? If that is accurate, then what would be the guiding choices, workflow framework, etc that would let me know where it makes sense to put that insert.
    And, maybe certain types of plugins make more sense on a Console vs the DAW side?
    And, maybe I’m missing a big piece of the puzzle?

    • @TheSteveKinney
      @TheSteveKinney  3 года назад

      Truthfully - console is kind of always working in the background with Luna.
      And when going UAD mon vs rec - within Luna, rather than having Console open, where you place the plugin is what is gonna determine what “mode” you’re in.
      So if you place the plugin at the top where the Rec FX label is then it will be printed. Visually speaking the first four slots in console are representing that to be the case, if you have the app open.
      If you just wanna be in Mon mode, then place the plugin in the insert of the track in the Luna mixer.
      Hopefully that makes sense.
      As far as workflow, not a lots changed as far as decision making. Still always the thought process of, what am I cool with baking into the signal. 😎
      Cheers brotha!

    What is frustrating with Apollo is suppose one has a Marshall amp in Input 1 with a Stereo delay as an insert that you want to print during record. It sounds fine as a Stereo image in the Monitor mode, but in Rec mode the DAW only records a single Mono or Stereo Left track without a stereo image. Is there a way to change that?

    This video was highly informative and helpful, thank you Steve. I have a question I was hoping you could answer.
    Adjusting the main knob on my Apollo Solo when set to HEADPHONE does NOT accordingly adjust the volume in console (like it does for you). The green dot adjacent to 'MONITOR' does turn on/ off however when I increase/ decrease the volume in console (when set to HEADPHONE) nothing happens. I emailed UAD support and they said it's normal and likely a safety feature to avoid sending high SPL's to headphones with an accidental flick of a wrist.
    I'm a bit confused as the feature would seem useful. Any ideas? Would highly appreciate your response. Thanks again!!

    • @TheSteveKinney
      @TheSteveKinney  2 года назад

      Hey dude! Thanks so much for the kind words.
      So when you’re Apollo is highlighting “monitor” it will adjust the volume of your main outputs.
      When it’s highlighting headphones - it will only control the volume of the signal being sent to the headphones only.
      This is a feature, not a bug. They are two different things and thus should have two different controls.
      Hope that makes sense.
      The GUI in console doesn’t change when you change the headphone volume either. It’s only represented on the Apollo device itself.

      Thanks so much for the comment! 🙏🏻
      So to clarify - all you need to do if you wanna record the effects on the aux channel from console:
      1. Know which “inputs” the aux channel is by going to the I/O matrix in UAD console settings. It’s device specific. So I can’t just say what it is.
      2. Add a stereo audio track in your DAW - choose the Aux bus as an input. Typically it’s higher numbers. If your on a solo it’s inputs 7-8 or something to that effect.
      3. Make sure the effects are “wet solo’d”. Hit record.
      Let me know if you need any help!

    This was a fantastic video! Subscribed. Just started a home studio for first time and lot to learn. This really helped with the Apollo and getting a good handle on some of the console functions. Just one question….is it best to add the mic pre plug in at the top of the channel as opposed to an insert? I like the idea of keeping the reverbs and delays in the aux channel and printing other things to the daw. Just unsure of whether to put a mic pre plug in in the insert area or at the top. Disclaimer…I’m also new to recording lol. Picked up enough from being in an actual studio to be slightly dangerous to myself.

    • @TheSteveKinney
      @TheSteveKinney  3 года назад +1

      Haha I feel you on the slightly dangerous part! That’s how most of us all get started, then the rabbit hole begins!
      Cheers to starting your home production space and thanks for the kind words!
      In reference to your question - with Apollo stuff - it’s usually best - especially if your mic’ing your source - to use the mic pre in the Unison slot. (The top slot)
      This enables the hardware inside the Apollo - physically change its impedance and gain structure that feeding the mic. So now your mic actually changes it’s response, making your signal really feel and sound like it’s going through a Neve or SSL.
      Amazing stuff. Now SOME situations it’s better to put the mic pre plugin in the insert slot - for example using a guitar amp plugin and just wanting the breakup from an SSL console. In this case - if you put the mic pre plugin on first - then you’d be sending the sound of a guitar playing into an ssl console into an amp sim.
      Not exactly the effect you’d wanna go for in that instance, so of course you’d put the mic pre plug after the fact. (I’m working on a video on this as we speak)
      Hopefully that clarifies it for ya brotha! Thanks for subscribing!
      Cheers,
      Steve

    • @TheSteveKinney
      @TheSteveKinney  3 года назад +1

      Hey Tera!
      Yes, what you must do is have “UAD Mon” enabled in UAD console. This will allows you to hear the effects while you’re recording but it won’t record the effects into your daw.
      In order to record the second track WITH compression while still recording the original track without compression, you will have to send your track in console to an Aux channel in console - then add a second track in your DAW and use your Aux channel as the input.
      On the aux Channel, pull the fader down in console so as not to hear duplicate signals while singing.

      You can’t really bypass the circuitry.

      And when you go into line in mode you’re effectively bypassing the pre, it’s an ultra clean linear gain preamp.
