@@metalflower9543 infected rain would be a good band to do as the vocalist of that band is a student of Melissa Cross and uses fry screaming (which is the only type of distorted vocals Sam is familar with, so might be a good start)
The thing that many people seem to believe is that singing with no up to insane amounts of distortion is a linear function paralleled by the amount of airflow and push needed to create it. But THAT is not the case. I've found that adding grid to your chest voice is sustainable once you understand that you don't need to create more pressure and airflow to achieve it. Here's how I like to think about it: You have your base tone which is nice and relaxed for your larynx, well supported by the diaphragm and not or only slightly compressed (not "winy"). Now here's the trick: If you want to get gritty you start compressing the "clean sound" which requires less airflow allowing you to lean into the sound engaging the tissue responsible for creating the desired effect of distortion, but without pushing your clean tone. You could say you're changing the distribution of the power you have within your base tone to favor the gritty effect whilst compressing the clean tone underneath. You're blending between two tones. That's at least how it feels for me.

I found your thoughts were very accurate, open-minded and you showed such a genuine interest to the song and the band, though it might not be smth you would have listened on your own... thank you 🙏
i understand this is the opposite end of your specialty but i really appreciate you doing it. its nice to hear a professional's perspective on screams(difficulty, talent, etc) and how good are a metal singers cleans. i hope you throw a metal song in every now and then for some of us
I´m blessed that i saw architects twice in last 2 years, and Sam is so fucking great at live that i couldnt believe its not prerecorded, none is even close to sound like that at live concerts from what i was able to see... maybe Lawrence from WSS?
I think Doomsday does more to show his control of distortion, but the amount of clean vocals in this probably makes it more suitable for this channel, judging by what I remember Oh, and in a completely unrelated style, Aimer's performances of 'Us' and 'Anata ni Deawanakereba' at Budokan are phenomenal
The best explanaition I've seen about how to vocal fry is to find your vocal break/bridge between the head and chest voice. You wanna sit on the note RIGHT ABOVE your vocal bridge, slow the note down, make it sound nasally if need be and quiet the volume and release smaller bits of air until you have that gritty "fry" sound. Once you can easily access your own head voice fry, it's all about relaxing the throat and voice and letting the diaphragm do all the work as anyone normally would in singing. Especially singing with air compression like rock singers do.
Sam, you should really do a Video on Nina Hagen in the 80s 90s. There are countless genious songs of her, such as Naturträne being one of the most impressive ones. She was so incredible versatile and insane in her singing! That would be really genious if you could analyze it in your way!
Architects are basically their own genre at this point. They play a very specific F# tuning in most of their hits going from Lost Forever Lost Together album to even this very last album. The thing about his screaming is that he is able to sing and scream at the same time. That's the most incredible aspect of his singing/screaming. First time I heard it when LF/LT came out I actually thought they had two singers singing in very close unison. Very few people I can say can do anything remote to this. Close second would be the singer of the band "Imminence." And another good example would be the singer of Silverstein as far as transitioning between screaming and clean singing flawlessly. I also saw Sam sing live during LF/LT in Denver when Tom was still alive and his vocals are basically the same live. It's kind of unbelievable to be honest.
I swear, the two of you together are so funny!! Can you please please please also react to NCTs Taeil Baby Baby (4MEN) Cover? I would love to hear your thoughts on his voice/technique. He is one of my most favourite Kpop vocalists and he has a unique style that i don't think you have reacted to yet (at least in Kpop :) ). Or you could react to his King of Masked Singer Reveal performance, he went a bit crazier there in case you prefer having more to analyse (or both yknow :))
I was there live and this show was the fucking shit. The whole band is just spot on, love it. Ps. Great video. Liked that you tried to think of how you‘d do it, even if you‘re not experienced in that style!
For anyone looking through the comments to find a place to learn how to do screams I would recommend definitely Melissa Cross and RiffShop for fry vocals and and I would recommend Vokill Covers and absolutely 100% Kardavox Academy for false chord screaming. Mark from Kardavox Academy does private online lessons in which he can teach both singing and false chord screams!
I'm so glad you brought Melissa Cross to the conversation, 'cause I didn't see the previous video with Hiram and I was from the beginning thinking about the Zen of Screaming!
Honestly these guys sounded exactly like that when I saw them live, they were essentially flawless. Legends.

Hello Sam, since you've gotten into the Architects you should absolutely try out the piano reprise of Doomsday where the other Sam is doing just cleans. I really love Architects and their music either recorded and live because Sam's vocals are just from another dimension. There's no replication for his voice.
Would love to see more metal stuff on this channel, some really good metal vocalists out there. Some of my favourite vocalists are from Ghost Atlas, Erra (same singer in GA and Erra) and Hands Like Houses.
Sam, please react to Dirty Loops’ “Next to You.” Exceptional musicians who do pop-jazz-funk. Their music is such high quality but I’d like to see what you think particularly about Jonah Nilsen’s vocals (he’s the keyboardist/lead).
When you talk about the scream @2:25 you are mostly correct. I believe it’s a combination of a fry scream and a mid scream which does use head voice as well, great analysis there!
Yeah, I was a little late to the Architects party as well, the new guitar player is a friend of the band and has his own band that just released a new album. His name is Josh Middleton. He's an amazing person.
With his style he uses a kind of pushed falsetto as you said but the scream part is not called fry. Fry uses the vocal folds which are already used for pitch production in this case. He is using the false cord technique where you use the cartiladges (Is that the right word? The parts above the vocal folds). With this you can ad distortion on top easily.
I've seen a couple comments about it but the vocals are usually referred to as "pitched screams" and it's kinda a fad right now in metalcore but it's not always just a fry scream. While sometimes it is just that, the way I do it and people like sam from architects do it, there's melody underneath the scream and its just more full that way. It's super dope and if you get the air, distortion, and melody distribution it's not so hard on your voice
Thank the lord you covered Architects finally i was wondering when you would review and react to Sam Carters Voice. personally in the Metal world he is my favorite vocalist.
I would love to see a Tesseract video. They're not even my fave band, but I love the dude's voice. The newest album...They've had a few singers, but he's better. Clean singing mostly. Instant like! I’m so glad you took the time to step out of your comfort zone and analyzed some of the finest metalcore ever! Sam Carter is such a legend... I found your thoughts were very accurate, open-minded and you showed such a genuine interest to the song and the band, though it might not be smth you would have listened on your own... thank you 🙏
Yes, Architects! 🔥
Also I’ve seen Architects live a few times, and they’re absolutely amazing. Sam’s voice is so on point. Definitely my favourite live band! Bleghh!
You gained a lot of my respect from this video. Metal music has so much talent and it’s amazing to see live
Yes, more stuff like this. Metal and rock vocals are a very underappreciated style in today's culture. It's cool to see you do this
i understand this is the opposite end of your specialty but i really appreciate you doing it. its nice to hear a professional's perspective on screams(difficulty, talent, etc) and how good are a metal singers cleans. i hope you throw a metal song in every now and then for some of us
Been waiting for this, thanks you! Also kinda can't believe my comment was on the request list of comments on screen! Keep up the awesome videos!
Can we just keep Hiram always pls?
Hey thanks!
their chemistry is so great Hiram is always welcome here loool
@@HiramSeason2 Love watching you listen to the recording and picking out production details. You interactions with Sam are also so fun
Make sure to give me and same a follow! Have videos coming soon!
I´m blessed that i saw architects twice in last 2 years, and Sam is so fucking great at live that i couldnt believe its not prerecorded, none is even close to sound like that at live concerts from what i was able to see... maybe Lawrence from WSS?
Guys, there's no pitch correction here. I've seen Architects 6 times. Sam is the most talented vocalist in metal. Easily.
I think Doomsday does more to show his control of distortion, but the amount of clean vocals in this probably makes it more suitable for this channel, judging by what I remember
Oh, and in a completely unrelated style, Aimer's performances of 'Us' and 'Anata ni Deawanakereba' at Budokan are phenomenal
I've had the privilege of seeing them live in a small venue and they are amazing, he sounds as good as the album's live. Sam Carter is the man.
Its awesome seeing guys like you react to Sam's vocals. He is a different breed.
There
are countless genious songs of her, such as Naturträne being one of the
most impressive ones. She was so incredible versatile and insane in her
singing! That would be really genious if you could analyze it in your
way!
I was on their concert here in Australia last year and I have to say is a mad experience! So cool!
React to
Whitechapel- when a demon defiles a witch, growls so deep then the most ambient cleans youd enjoy.
“Were almost 30 seconds into this, and....that’s how fair use works.”
Sam is the best, bro!! Saw a lot of fancams along the years a know the band (12 years, i think?) and he sounds great, always!
One of my favourite bands! Thank you for covering Architects ❤️ And Sam is the best
They've been active since 2004, and were such an influence through my teenage years. One of the tightest and hard working bands in the industry.
Thank you for covering this. Amazing live band.
Would love to see you do an reaction/analysis of Pheonix - Tesseract live. Dan's vocals is one of my favourite vocalists of all time 😁
I was clicking off the video as you were saying about non fans already tuning out. 🤣 I'll be back for the next one!
I love the metal reactions, everything you did on Jinjer (Perennial, Pisces) was awesome. Also I loved the Devin Townsend one.
I was at that very gig and yes the guy is a damn wizard machine. The whole thing was so amazing and emotional.
Thank you so much, we needed this
Thank the lord you covered Architects finally i was wondering when you would review and react to Sam Carters Voice. personally in the Metal world he is my favorite vocalist.
I would love to see a Tesseract video. They're not even my fave band, but I love the dude's voice. The newest album...They've had a few singers, but he's better. Clean singing mostly.
ORRR Ayreon - Druids Turn to Stone ft. Damian Wilson. His voice is...chef's kiss. idk if he studied classical but wouldn't be surprised
FUCK YEAH! Waited so long for this! Great video guys!
It's cool that u r reacting to this type of singing and there r some bands that has singers will blow ur mind. Explore new worlds dude
I can assure you this has little to no editing, he sounds amazing live.
You should check out Spencer Sotelo from Periphery, he does an amazing job in every song of their latest album Hail Stan, I think you'd enjoy Garden in the Bones or Satelites.
I really really enjoyed this 🤘🏽 Already a big fan of the band - really enjoyed this take on it all.
