For the longest time I thought a warrant officer was somebody who could just kick down a door without a warrant

I was a CWO4 in the Coast Guard. I had to visit a Navy ship once to get some documents from their engineering department. On ships it's the custom to strike the ships bell when officers O-5 and higher are approaching and once the rank is known, it is announced on the 1MC or PA system.
This kid on the quarterdeck saw silver doo dads on my shoulder and immediately struck the ships bell, piping me aboard with "Now Captain, US Coast Guard approaching...".
I had to give him a quick indoc on what the warrant ranks look like once he was done ringing and saluting.

Warrant officers in my experience where always the best to be under. Experience and wisdom of an enlistedman and the power of an officer.

My experience is in the Army. If Chief is a true leader then he’s treated like one of the boys, albeit at the top of the food chain and regarded with respect and deference. If Chief acts like a manager instead of a leader then he’s regarded like the Officers. Difference between the two is how easy Chief chooses for his life to be. Leader = good Chief who is loved. Manager = guy who chooses as many headaches as he bitches about

I remember asking the first WO I've ever seen in basic, he was administering the PT test, what the protocol was as well. He was really chill, basically explained it like you did

dunno. Never found one in the wild. Chief just seems to be a figment of my imagination. ESPECIALLY when it comes to signing my NCOER. Prick. Still love you, Chief. Even if it's from afar.

A WO1 is the only NCO rank (since warrant officers aren't commissioned until CWO2) to be rendered a salute....and the main difference between E6-E9s and WO1s:
*E6-E9s become more personnell managers as one progresses and less about their occupation (MOS).
*WO1s are on track to be more technically immersed in their MOS and gain additional knowledge and responsibility; which comes with added authority and influence.
Not all occupation specialties will have opportunities to pursue a warrant officer position.

A WO1 is not an NCO, or am I wrong?

    • @jayeallen6668
      @jayeallen6668 11 месяцев назад

@@DavidThomas-me6pi With respect, An NCO is a Non Commissioned Officer-a military officer (petty officers in the Navy) that doesn't hold a commission.
At WO1 that officer is given a warrant by either the branch secretary or Defence Secretary (not sure which one at the moment). A warrant officer doesn't hold a commission until CWO2.
Now this may offend some in the warrant officer community because NCOs always imply "enlisted", and the WO1 rank is rendered a salute. However, by definition, still a Non Commissioned Officer.

WO1's are indeed officers. A CSM does salute a WO1. Officer. Customs aren't always congruent with doctrine. @@DavidThomas-me6pi

@@jayeallen6668While you’re not wrong with them being a Non-Commissioned, they are an “appointed” officer. When going through my GT class, our CW3 instructor informed us WO1s are appointed as an officer. So an officer. Just like Cadets/OCS candidates are not commissioned nor Noncommissioned. They are APPOINTED the same custom and courtesies. Also for cadets, while I don’t personally like to agree with, they out rank NCOs regardless of military service. WO1s are given the authority to have the same respect as commissioned officers. Hopefully I explained it well.

Incorrect! A W-1 is an Officer by APPOINTMENT! A W-1 is saluted by ALL enlisted personnel. A W-1 out ranks all E-9s. At CW2, the Warrant is issued a Commission by the President of the United States.@@jayeallen6668

While you’re not wrong lol, there is positional authority. Just like how a 2LT out ranks a CSM or CW5, they are still technically under them. A CW3-CW5 is a field grade, so technically out ranks 2LT.
Ive seen my old 1SG convince my new 2LT PLT Leader to lock our CSM at attention at our motor-pool, that’s the day I learned the difference lol
