I managed to pick up a 16 GB, i7 2014 Mac mini at a yard sale for $50 bucks. All it was missing was a bluetooth/wifi card. Went ahead and bought a SSD and replaced the hard drive while I was at it. It's a fantastic secondary computer! I have a M1 MacBook Pro 14 as my daily driver, but this little guy is really impressive, and a perfect little media machine. Runs Ventura fairly well with OpenCore. Great video!

I just want to use iMovie and continue Monterey on the 2014 basically. Can I literally just disconnect and reconnect the monitor when needed to work on the MM2014? Making sure I leave the Monterey on it and reinstall iMovie. Suggestions?

I'm using a 2018 Mac mini, i7 with 32GB RAM. About 1 month into owning it, I spent more on an eGPU (Razer Core X with AMD 5600 XT) because of fan noise every time I joined a Zoom or Teams video call, plus it enabled gaming - I'm still a StarCraft2 fan, as well as using Bootcamp for some Steam gaming - was very happy when Bootcamp gladly recognised the eGPU solution. Using 10GbE as I run VMs from a NAS volume (SSD in RAID10, so I have full advantage of 1GB/sec throughput) and store footage on the NAS. 10GbE enables me to edit directly on NAS. I've been trialling a standard spec M2 Mac mini (8GB, 1GbE) this week, and using a USB-C 2.5GbE ethernet is OK but does impact video timeline and the 4x copy times are noticeable, plus chews up a 50% of the ports unless I use dongles or hubs... I think I'm going to return it in favour of a slightly higher-spec M2 with 16GB and 10GbE. What has sold me on switching are a handful of apps I can't run on Intel (App Store iOS / iPadOS apps) and the fact that the power consumption is about 6-10x lower at under 10W, and that an iMovie export of a 6minute 2.7K drone clip took 1.5 minutes on the M2 but 6.3 minutes on the i7. That kind of efficiency has me sold immediately.
EDIT: forgot to mention that the Intel's fan spins up very often (despite regular cleaning) - things like OneDrive sync or Time Machine backups cause max fan noise. The M2 has been dead silent despite StarCraft2, OneDrive, Teams calls, etc. all thrown at it todau

    • @TheAppleHelpline
      @TheAppleHelpline  Год назад +1

That’s cool.. I think I saw after the 2018 came out people trying eGPU’s and the results were really good. You really used that machine to its potential. Yeah that M2 with only 8GB really shows it’s weakness when you try to actually do anything intense. Also that lacking of ports is a pain in the ass and can be expensive to add a Thunderbolt hub, external drives etc… I figured editing on it would be hard to do when doing anything extensive. Also, that fan did kick up when I was doing other things…lol.. I’m working on another kind of video for this Mac Mini that will be interesting… thanks for taking the time to share what you have.. it’s really cool to see

I know this is an older video, but it's worth mentioning that the 2018 Mac mini didn't have upgradable storage. It was the first one to offer soldered BGA chips.
It basically comes down to the 2014 with upgradable storage (2.5" and optional M.2 with adapter for dual drives) and 16GB DDR3 RAM max, or the 2018 with soldered storage (upgradable if you have a decent rework station and you're skilled enough to replace BGA chips) and a max of 64GB DDR4 RAM.
I personally just bought a 2014 with the i7 and 16GB RAM for $120 CAD off eBay to use as a Plex server, so these prices came WAY down since this video was posted, obviously lol. SSD storage also came way down, you can get a 4TB SSD for like $300 CAD now, I spent $420 (nice) on this 4TB i7 16GB RAM 2014 Mac mini Plex Server and couldn't be happier.
I had some issues with OpenCore at first but eventually got it all sorted out.

Typing this from my 2014 macbook air with a dual core i5 and 4gb of ram. This machine is my in bed and throw in the bag for school machine I use for basic tasks like web browsing or watching this video. It's slow and when you open more then a couple things it lags hard due to the 4gb ram, but it's still more then usable, and a good exercise of patience.
It's actually not bad and I'm dual booting macOS Sonoma with opencore and Windows 11.
My main system is a 2021 16 in m1 max macbook pro, but I got tired of lugging that expensive big machine around, so this macbook air works perfectly for that.

I am currently watching this video on the same 2014 i7 Mac Mini, only it is running Chrome OS Flex:
installing software is as simple as right clicking and selecting "install via Linux",
I have 'nala' installed on the terminal for easy updates,
VS Code, Java JDK, Scala 3, PowerShell, nano . . .
If not for Chrome OS Flex I would have surely just tossed this machine, on account of its older OS (which doesn't even allow you to install Xcode! . . .
you can however use Replit, if you want to pay a small monthly fee).
    Was it worth $168? Sure.

Further more. You didn't really answer the question... What's the software support like? Can it run the latest macos and software? And to that end, even on currently installed software, do all features work or has stuff been cut out due to age/ hardware support?

Great video with a great message! Realistically 99% of the people who buy a "base" Mac will never push beyond its capabilities. And unless they earn income editing multiple videos daily a "base" Mac will meet the needs of 99% of people. Sure twice a year they'll edit birthday videos for their kids on iMovie and maybe see a beachball for 5-seconds, but who cares? Far better they spend the $400 upgrade cost on fast external storage plus a local backup drive, and expanded cloud storage for off-site backups.

I've had Mac minis since 2012, they were my go to Apple device until just recently. My favorite of the Intel minis was the 2018. I upgraded the RAM to 16GB (unfortunately the storage isn't upgradeable) and ran Boot Camp with Windows. I have to say I miss that the most since I moved to the M series Macs. Regarding displayport, I don't recall you mentioning the resolution of your wide screen monitor but if it's 1080p you won't see any improvement using an HDMI adapter with that 2012 mini.
