Hey everyone! I have always wanted to do these types of video essays that cover broader topics instead of purely making video tutorials on a single game, and I do hope to make such a transition in the near future, with this video as an experiment. Please let me know what you think of this video and I will be sure to take every comment into consideration. Thanks for watching!

It really makes me sad that revival my dreams, an event about being misunderstood, got completely misunderstood by the fandom

    • @robonene7611
      @robonene7611 Год назад +126

the majority of the fandom is just kids who aren't mature enough to play the game, not even talking about having twitter or tiktok... some cannot even write(type) and read properly so yeah... and they're most likely to get manipulated into "cancelling dramas". they're just got introduced into new culture (japanese in this case) too early while not understanding the concept of culture in general. for a kid, their culture is the most important, precious and real thing - the sentiment is what makes them respect it.
the problem is, they respect only their own culture, and don't even notice others.
in that case, you have to acknowledge the game is based on japanese culture, and that's it. if you're not from japan but keep being delusional that translation is enough to understand it, no it's not. i think older proseka players like this game because they like japan itself so they will also have more understanding for "controversies" that wouldn't be even considered as controversies in japan.
personally ive read the story few times, saw the cards online and liked them - they remind me of princess mononoke! ah and of course, rui's character lore, i started liking him more thanks to that event. just like you said, he was misunderstood as well - his intentions got misunderstood, his finished script he was proud of (although he was scared ppl wont like it) got misunderstood, him playing the villian in the show got misunderstood the most. personally most concerning part for me was while emu almost fell of the tree, not the "promoting colonisation" drama. well at least we got the song, still the developers could change event details and release it edited. like they had over a year for that lol, they just didn't expect ppl will feel offended by the event and that's it.

Dude that's the whole point of the story
The thing is that the city folk called the forest folk barbarians because that's generally what they thought of them
The forest folk aren't actually barbarians, it's just the racist stereotype that the city folk had in their heads that later on was disproved in the story itself (city folk and forest folk finally got along together = city folk no longer thinking that forest folk are barbarians) also it was shown that the whole stereotype was an evil city man's plan to start in order to keep the beef between the 2 folks.

When I finished reading the translated transcript, I literally went like "ain't no way they considered this problematic"
Honestly, I'm not even Japanese, and my understanding of Japanese culture is extremely vague
But I'm not stupid enough to take the story for face value and not understand the deeper message it has.
Gosh, not even the straightforward message was "problematic"
The story started with 2 folks hating eachother due to racist stereotypes and later on ended with them learning that the stereotypes arent, in fact, true. Esp when cf learned that ff weren't "barbarians" like they thought. It drives me insane what Twitter and tiktok addicts can do sometimes.

  • @snicksss
    @snicksss Год назад +1309

I’m pretty sure the whole “blackface” thing was in actuality, a representation of the Japanese culture “gyaru” or “gal”. They tend to cake their faces in makeup, and you see them in quite a lot of anime. Take Komi san for example. There’s a girl named Manbagi, and she is clearly depicted with darker skin. It’s not mocking dark skin at all, it’s just a fashion choice. They weren’t mocking anything at all in Puchiseka.
On the topic of Revival my Dream, it’s not trying to offend those of indigenous cultures at all. In fact, it’s the opposite. If you actually read the story (not talking to op), you’d realize the whole story revolves around the forest people and city people learning that they are capable of getting along, there is just the evil person (which can be correlated to corrupted politicians, the news media, etc) trying to separate them. It’s an actually good story. Some people just looove to ruin things for people and they want to be offended by everything for no reason.

Sure a lot of things could seem offensive but it’s just them expressing their take on certain things, just like we find some things offensive they find different things offensive too, the cultural aspect leads to unwanted and unintentional tension. It feels strange to me, that there would be a negative reaction to costume design purely based on the era it drew fashion inspiration from. People largely don't react that strongly when designs are based on past European or North American eras, although there's certainly discussion to be had about what was going on in those times... among historic fashion RUclipsrs there is a saying that goes something like "historic fashion, not historic values". I would make the good faith assumption that the artist drew inspiration purely from the fashion of the time, not the rest?

I honestly don't see the problem with Nene card or the event itself, since - like the video shows - it was mainly inspired by Princess Mononoke and the nature x humanity conflict. I never heard of someone that complained about this movie, so why complain about the event?
And I think there is a difference between cultural appropriation and cultural appreciation. There is dozens of channels of americans and various people from other countries that currently lives in Japan hanging out wearing kimonos, and no one bats an eye feeling offended - some of them even compliments those girls. But it is indeed wrong to draw a kimono wrongly and sexualize it trying to make a girl seem attractive sexually on it, for example.

(I'm only commenting about the "blackface" one.)
It's totally intended to be similar to gyaru at least and their outfits are LION costumes. They look tribal, yes, but they're literally intended to be lions because of the "leo" is the band's name, it's not some racist thing being pointed at actual tribal people. This whole thing is an example of people just overreacting because they made an assumption.
Also, can we acknowledge that blackface is probably hardly ever heard of in Japan? They probably didn't know how people could interpret this, and I don't blame them for it.

I don't think PuchiSeka meant any offense, but I guess I can understand if people concerned didn't feel comfortable because of it. Like, it wasn't mocking any races explicitly, but you can say it was a bit awkward.
    Revival My Dream, though...
It's really sad how people don't understand what denonciation through media is, or don't take the time to care about it.
The Forest dweller were never depicted in a bad light; the officer (Tsukasa's character) called them savages and barbarics at first yeah. But the whole plot was about him changing his mind once he met "Emu".
The piece only set a context at first, a quite realistic one actually, since those kinds of things happened and keeps happening in differents forms, that's even why people are offended in the first place. But that context wasn't reinforce and encouraged, it was totally discredited instead. (Btw the Forest dweller wasn't really open towards the town dweller at first. It's a normal reaction since they were judged at first, but it just show how both side were misunderstanding each other, and how people will answer hate with hate and worsen the situation, so it's important to point. -No one blames them to do so though, don't worry- )
The whole piece showed how wrong was that behavior at the first place, and the whole message was about not judging someone you don't know on something like appearance or a difference of culture and mindset, first try to understand them.
(A nice parrallel to Rui's life, since he was never understood, but always really careful and understanding himself. He would never write a show to belittle soemone or a category of people, and the developpers won't ever make him write somehting like that either)
Rui himself was a Town dweller, and the actual antagonist. Some dumb politician wanting the conflict between the two people to last for the sake of black oil exploitation, so he tried to stop The Officer and The Girl's plan to reconciliate their respective people... Therefore he locked up the officer. Yeah that's what Tsukasa's card was about, and by the way I can add Rui's Alchemist costume has nothing to do with the piece, it was only his Alchemist persona y'all know from the main story, as clearly shown on the said Tsukasa's card.
The girls card and costume... I can't tell what wrong with it, to be honest ? I can't sayd if it's okay either. There's nothing offensive about it in itself, from what I see. If the only problem is that it's a tribal costume... then excuse me but I don't see how is that a problem, with what I state above in mind. (Keep in minds the girls costume was also made for the theater piece, it's a bit fancy on purpose and therefore not 100% realistic. Also bcz it's for the game, obviously.)
If there's a problem I don't see, please enlighten me, because I'm honestly just confused here...
Otherwise... The whole event was about misunderstanding, and that if you just tried to know a bit more before judging, you could understand in the end, but it was cancelled by twitter for a misunderstanding based on two screenshots... This is so ironic I don't know if I should laugh or cry. In the end, the people who blamed the event are acting exactly in that way : They're just ignorantly blaming something they don't know about out of a misunderstanding.
And the developpers just choose to kept the misunderstanding as it is instead of clarifying the situation, by taking the event down. (If MMJ had as much resilience than the devs I don't know where they would be today, I swear...)
I guess I can understand both the devs and those people at some point, but I still disagree with both.
The worst ones though, are the one saying that the event was racist, and using japan's difference of culture as an excuse for it.
I mean, yes. There is a difference of culture and education, I don't doubt that. But that dosen't mean they're stupid ?
It can leads to some awkward things like PuchiSeka, without direct offense or mockery towards anyone (except Leo/Need themselves, in an harmless way)
But it won't lead to them writing a whole theater piece to belittle a category of people, just like that ? They have a different culture history and educations, but they know what insults/pejoratives words are, and they won't use them ignorantly ?
(Btw before writing somehting you're doing research about it, so if the piece was about American's colonisation they would know about it anyway, internet is here for that. But as the video said, it was about Mononoke Hime and their own culture... That they know better than you, probably.)
You're justifying a racism that doesn't exist... With an actual form of racism. I can forgive the people who've been offended by the screenshot without context (But go read a fan translation of the event and think about it a bit, please, if you don't mind)
I can forgive the devs for choosing the safer solution for them, as wrong as it was
But this... This is honestly... urg. This is just too much. (I don't blame the one who make the video though, you just stated things in a neutral way, you didn't try to justify anything, so it's fine)
With this said... Please go read a fan translation before setting your mind about that event. If you didn't I won't try to chnage your mind any further, you feel how you feel, in the end. But at least give it a chance and try to understand, you'll see it means no harm. Thanks if you've read all of this.
To finish, I think Senbonzakura and the costume were more about showing and defending japanese culture (especially from the western's one), than trying to offend Korean culture in any way, but I don't know much about it and I can understand that it makes people umconfortable nonethless (Especially for Senbonzakura)
