    I live in Myrtle Beach and for the first time I started russet potatoes and yellow potatoes on February 28 in 20 gallon fabric bags. I followed your older potato video exactly and the green tops came through a a little over two weeks ago! Now they’re about 6 inches tall. I started fertilizing them too. I’m so excited! I appreciate videos this video but I do have additional tips that might help people. My main additional tip would of been to use a variety of carrots that such as uzbek carrots because a common problem is that most carrots cannot grow well in the soil unless it's loose. Uzbek has a large tap root which makes it more versatile and hardy for most soil. Also my 2nd tip would of been to make DIY seed tape out of paper towel so you don't have to worry about the carrots/seeds washing away and it keeps the seeds moist.

    I'm south of St Louis Missouri in zone 6b, and I am planting sugar snap peas, kale, lettuce, cabbage, spinach, radishes and carrots. Probably a few I forgot too. I winter sow (the jug method) and they are crawling out the tops of the jugs. @@TheConlinHomestead hahaha I expect that. This whole thing has been a rush until recently. Had to do a complete overhaul of an old barn into a workshop space with one of my stalls turning into a coop. Added an outside run out the back into the woods. Made a plot right to the side where there used to be a chicken coop about 6 years ago and prepped it. Built a potters nook that doubles as a greenhouse. It’s been a lot to do solo, not going to lie. But I’m loving it. Ended up basically just in time for the season to come around. Invested in a wood chipper. Planning on using wood chips for basically everything especially once I get cows and pigs here.

    • @TheConlinHomestead
      @TheConlinHomestead 2 месяца назад +1

      @@Lonelupin I did the same with the wood chips but I bought too small 3 inch. It works great for what it is, but I need like a 8-12 inch haha. So much time prepping the smaller stuff. I’m gonna try chidrop this year to help start me off strong.
      And that all sounds great I wish I had a barn!!

    • @TheMillennialGardener
      @TheMillennialGardener  2 месяца назад

      I had a similar issue. It took a long time for summer to cool down. When it was finally cool enough for the peas to germinate, it resulted in them not finishing in time. Then, winter finally killed them off when we had a 17 degree night. Peas are tough to grow in fall, but they're a breeze to grow in spring! Get them in about 3 weeks before last frost.

      I use vermiculite instead of peat moss as I had trouble with peat moss forming a hard cap on my planting row. If you use peat moss be sure that it is moist, and kept moist, until germination occurs. I cover my carrot seeds with cardboard in my Zone 9b and keep it moist until I see sprouting seeds and then off it comes.

    It’s also nice to see my garlic sprouted a few weeks ago and I have 4 to 5 inch greens sticking up in 6A/B. Garlic is so early that it makes you hungry to garden.

      Nice! Garlic is fun, especially if you live in a cold climate. It brings some life to winter. I recommend you plant leeks in late summer. They'll overwinter, and you'll be able to harvest them throughout the winter in Zone 6. It'll be really nice.

      It isn’t. You’d think it would be, but it is too cold in winter and too hot in summer. I get 2 nice months in spring and 1 nice month in fall. The other 9 months, I need protection to grow, either from sun or cold.

    Do you still recommend starting newly rooted figs cuttings in containers for the first year and then plant them in ground? Are there certain varieties you only do in containers? Are you moving towards all in ground? I just started with figs, zone 6a. I went with LSU tiger, figo preto, olympian, i258, hardy chicago, ischia, alma, cdd noir, mbvs, and emerald strawberry. Only one I couldn't find was a cherry type. Most are just starting to root now and a few I bought as small plants. Hoping to get at least one or two to fruit this year. Thanks for your help!

    I also just planted 6 of the the white parts of the green onions I bought in the grocery store for 69 cents. Last year I did that and they produced for nearly an entire year!

    *Sigh. I planted my peas per usual in my garden beds along the trellis. Well the very next morning I found tiny newly dug little holes the same depth as my planting holes and some pea shells on top of the soil. I figured out some greedy little mouse came along and ate all but one! I planted dozens and only one plant came up. What a thorough little mouse. It very much enjoyed its little mouse smorgasbord I set up for it! 😮
    I decided to try using grow bags to change things up and so far I’ve had some germination already. This same thing happened in my greenhouse with my cucumbers and squash seeds. Those are some annoying little mice I’ll tell ya! My husband got a trap and we’ve caught about 8 so far. Yikes. 😱

      Do you mean seeds? If your seeds are late, double down and plant some sets. I had a bunch of my onion seeds damp off, so I'm going heavy on sets to hedge my bets. This is the last year I start my onion seeds in coco coir. Next year, I'm using pure vermiculite.

    We double up a piece of row cover (fabric) for our carrots and hold it down with rocks. Nothing ever gets washed away and moisture is rarely an issue.

      @TheMillennialGardener we monitor the water of course. The good thing about the fabric is you can water on top, it also rains a lot in CT so it very minimal. Once or twice at best. We plant around mid April here

    I once used the board method for carrots and it worked great but now I cannot remember how to use it. Do you uncover it after the germination time to be sure you don't smother them? I planted two different carrots this year in pots and in garden North CentrAL FL and had ZERO germination from 2 different seed packs. Never knew they were hard to germinate, I thought maybe I had bad seed but how from 2 different sources.

I will plant my potatoes outdoors in maybe 3 weeks. Have planted potatoes too early before and had thr greens zapped with frost, which attracted pests

    • @TheMillennialGardener

      Good start! If your potatoes break ground early, just cover them in more compost and mulch. Pull the mulch back when the frost is over.

    • @TheMillennialGardener
      @TheMillennialGardener  2 месяца назад

      A lot of people hate on peat moss, but I love it. I like it a lot more than coir. Coir has a lot of issues with the salt content, and peat is great with the acidic pH. Garden veggies prefer acidic soil almost uniformly. It's just great stuff. It burns me so badly that 3 years ago, a bale of peat was $9 and now it's $24 😒
