ABOUT KIM'S CONVENIENCE:
"Kim's Convenience" depicts a Korean Canadian Kim family that runs a convenience store in the Moss Park neighbourhood of Toronto: parents "Appa" (Paul Sun-Hyung Lee) and "Umma" (Jean Yoon) - Korean for dad and mom, respectively - along with their daughter Janet (Andrea Bang) and estranged son Jung (Simu Liu). Other characters include Jung's friend and coworker Kimchee (Andrew Phung) and his manager Shannon (Nicole Power). The series is based on Ins Choi's 2011 play of the same name. Mr. and Mrs. Kim have worked hard to give their now-twenty-something children, Janet and Jung, a better life in Canada. This comedy finds laughter in the trials of running a literal 'Mom and Pop' shop while raising kids in a culture not quite your own.

It makes me so sad to know how hard the cast members had to fight for their voices and accurate + respectful portrayals while filming. I hope these stars know that revealing their struggles with scripts/producers/cultural inaccuracies on set is such a helpful and honorable thing to do. It's clear that these actors are knowledgeable and each have their own impressive paths - I am rooting for you each all the way.
That's not exactly what happened. Lol😅 Ins Choi was the showrunner. The cast was stepping all over themselves to make it into THEIR show when Choi had written the play about HIS life, HIS parents and HIS experience living in the Korean community.
That is not accurate. Listen to the Korean actors when then say how much they had to compensate for the misinformation within the scripts. Also, they mention that a lot of this occurred after he took a break from the last season(s)
The problem was never with Ins Choi, his intentions, or his writing ♡ and I'm pretty sure the actors who attempted to bring attention to the issues made sure to cover all this
@@mysteryomni7486 Simu Liu admitted in his Facebook post that there was 'infighting'. Paul Sun-Hyung Lee also said: “It died from within.... It’s a cautionary tale. No matter how good it can be, if you don’t deal with issues from within and try to gloss it over because everything on the surface looks fantastic and idealistic, then you are just asking for trouble. I think that’s the unfortunate lesson from this whole thing.” Lee tried to convince Choi to return but said that he wouldn't return any phone calls. Zero. Does that sound like Choi wasn't upset with the cast? No, clearly, he was pissed at all the fighting. The actors didn't give any compelling, egregious examples of culturally racist or offensive writing. Choi and White were a great writing team. Kim's Convenience was a huge success, enjoyed great ratings and reviews and lasted several seasons... Until infighting ended the show. The cast, especially Simu Liu, aren't an innocent group of angels. In his Facebook post, Simu admitted that he was a problem child and odd man out who said an did stupid things that weren't helpful.
@@shameless5444 Jean Yoon brought up examples where she felt her voice was ignored or where she didn't like the direction of the story. But the lack of asian representation in the writer's room is just... weird. The dismissal of Jean Yoon's concerns is just... weird. And a lot of it just sounds like the writers were being lazy.
Simu Liu's issues were different, though. The truth of the matter is Simu Liu isn't even Korean. He's Chinese. His issues with production were more about how the production company managed the show and how they cancelled it without even considering letting the actors be show runners. And that the cast was making a lot less money than the cast of Schitt's Creek (which was a lower rated show, but I feel like those contracts weren't being renegotiated every year).
I don't think Liu's stance is realistic necessarily overall. It's unfortunate, but actors generally have to fight REALLY hard to be given ANY sort of production power on a series. Even if they have experience in production (which Mr. Mehta's actor Sugith Varughese does). It does really sound like the production team just flat out didn't care.
Just finished the show in 2024 for the first time and I’m so sad on how it ended I’m not even Korean or Canadian but being a son of immigrants I still feel I could relate.
I just finished watching the series in Netflix. I can’t tell you how much belly aching laughter this show brought us. Sad they didn’t make more seasons. ☹️
There was another 2 seasons commissioned and the shows creator just announced out of nowhere he didn't want to create anymore thus ending one of the best shows ever.
@@flipradio123that’s so crazy and disappointing I just finished watching it aswell and the ending was awful there were so many stories waiting to be told.
Oh, Simu!!! You're also one of those single, most amazing things that ever happened to Asian people all over the world. And Appa & Umma too!! And Kimchee!❤️❤️
never will i forget this show and the joy it brought me and my brother, thank you for having something to look forward to
Sneaky of yall to post this right after that actor spoke out about how they were really treated by the creators and producers. Not cool. Props to Simu Liu.
undeserving a a "sneak attack"
Woaw what happened?
- Simu Liu claims that the show was 'cancelled'. However, the CBC never cancelled the show. Ins Choi owns the rights to the show and main characters The showrunners decided to end the show. Big difference. They had been given a green light and option for a sixth season, but they never took it. It's not unusual for showrunners to walk away and end a show when they want it to. Liu wanted to use the word 'cancel' because it's a much more negative and emotionally charged word. He wanted to portray himself as a poor victim. Bad Optics.
- Simu Liu threw shade at the spin-off show with the 'Shannon' character. The CBC, Netflix and none of the cast owns the rights to the main characters in Kim's Convenience. They belong to Choi, the Korean Canadian playwright who adapted his play to the tv show. However, Choi didn't own the rights to new characters, such as 'Shannon'. Therefore, the producers can create a spin-off show with that character. Nobody knows what the spin-off show will be about and how diverse the characters will be. Therefore, it's very premature for Simu to condemn the show, say he's resentful and weaponize his army of fans to preemptively dislike the show. In interviews, Simu likes to say that a rising tide raises all ships, but he's very bitter that a 'white' character is getting a spin-off show. He claims that he's happy for the actress, Nicole Power, but he's surrounding her show and her big opportunity with controversy. Liu then said he's resentful of the show and states that he would never join it, if asked. Interesting. Doesn't he want more Asian representation in the show? Obviously, Kim's Convenience cannot continue due to IP issues. Why wouldn't Simu say that he'd be willing and open to join the show to reprise his 'Jung' character or to take the role of a new Asian character for the spin-off?? He sounds like a bratty kid with hurt feelings. Bad Optics.
- Simu Liu thought that "lead actors were the stewards of character, and would grow to have more creative insight as the show went on". The showrunners have direct control over the characters, arcs and plotlines. Actors can only make suggestions, but they aren't entitled to run the show. There's no rule that gives actors showrunner responsibilities as a show progresses. That's arrogant, wishful thinking. Moreover, actors are supposed to be professionals. They can't try to hijack creative control, cause drama during production and publicly air their grievances for personal benefit. He admits that he wanted more control over story ideas. Bad Optics.
- Simu Liu had to film Shang Chai, which is a large Hollywood blockbuster that caused scheduling conflicts for the Kim's Convenience show. Obviously, this had an impact on the show's writing for Simu's Jung character. What did Simu do? He complained about his lack of screentime. Bad Optics.
- Simu Liu admits that he was a difficult cast member. He said that he was the 'odd man out', a 'problem child', was 'insecure' and 'said and did things that were not helpful'. He said that there was a lot of 'infighting'. He also admitted that he wanted to use Kim's Convenience to 'take his career where it needed to go'. Simu Liu wanted to use the show to advance his career so he fought hard to try and take control. Bad Optics.
- Simu Liu complained about pay. There were no famous, esteemed actors on the show, they weren't represented by powerful agents and the Canadian entertainment industry isn't as huge as the American one. Why did Simu Liu, a freshmen actor, think he was going to be paid well? Low pay is typical for small shows with no name actors. He negotiated his contract poorly and now can't deal with it. Bad optics.
- Simu Liu said that the writing team 'lacked both East Asian and female representation'. However, Ins Choi was the Korean Canadian playwright who wrote the play and adapted it for the tv show. It was a "love letter to [his] parents and to all first-generation immigrants who call Canada their home". Kim's Convenience was about his family life and his experiences. Choi was the creator, showrunner, producer and head writer for the show (with credits on every episode). He's East Asian and he produced an amazing show about a Korean family for several years. Clearly, the show was very successful and had quality writing. Next, there were 15 different female writers who worked on the show and some were brought in through the talent pipeline. Simu is talking out the side of his mouth. Furthermore, Simu wanted to take over Choi's show as a writer or director. However, it was Choi's show about his parents and his life... And Liu wanted to take that show over. Choi, as a person and a playwright, didn't want to gift his personal experience, memories and 'love letter' to strangers who were hungry to advance their careers and agenda. The actors thought the show belonged to them or that they could inherit it. Bad Optics.
The shows creators and producers didn't mistreat the cast. What are you talking about?
@@sunnysied713 - You seem quite certain that Simu is the bad guy here, but you make no mention of the public statement Jean Yoon posted on Twitter that supports what Simu has said. Additionally, though he has not made as specific comments as either Simu Liu or Jean Yoon because he hasn’t felt ready to be as candid yet, Paul Sun-Hyung Lee has also publicly stated things that fall along similar lines.
In short, you can argue “bad optics” all you want, but I would be hesitant to put faith in what amounts to a hit piece on Simu Liu written by someone with no behind the scenes exposure to the show as opposed to his co-stars who were actually there.
I cant believe this show is over.
Like wow how can you leave us hanging like that. Such great character development
Hanging forever. Some of us knew while watching the 5th season that it was the last season & yet we were heartbroken. Imagine the agony of the cast members who had no idea they were shooting the last season. They must have felt so blindsided

I hope the show comes back, maybe even a movie perhaps but the right way and all the original cast members coming back. I thoroughly enjoyed the show and all the beloved characters. Definitely became one of my top favorite shows!
I love this show!
now hes the best actor
Best show on Netflix 🔥🔥🔥
Amazing. From his humble beginnings as the son of a Toronto convenience store, he trained hard to become a master of Kung Fu and, I wanna say... fight Dr. Strange or something?
This guy seems like he would make for a good Marvel character. He already has that superhero physique
I recommend listening to his "We Were Dreamers: An Immigrant Superhero Origin Story". Simu Liu's epic story in hardly concluded but the story so far is really worth a listen. (I suppose you can read the book too but having him read his own words and tell his own story had a lot of impact for me.)
love this vid. Thanks for your work!
Sad for Simu that KC is over, but happy for him that he'll be playing a superhero
He didn’t have to flex this hard with his abs
Ooh simu liu is getting cuter

You make good points but you make them very poorly. Bad optics!
@@bamberako Thanks! People need to independently research and verify what they read, see and hear. Rarely are things simple, cut-and-dry, black-and-white. Ins Choi and the entire production team did a great job with the show!
Couldn’t agree more with all that. My only suggestion would be to be more considerate of how you might be coming across. Doesn’t matter what you are saying if you have the wrong tone. Changing someone’s perspective is a delicate task
Great points absolutely spot on. I think he is a little brat the way he has behaved. Let's also not forget he deleted that tweet criticising Mark Wahlberg for asking for his record to be expunged over the bashing of and Asian man. And why? Because he is working on a movie with him. Gutless flat track bully.
On a side note I have a friend who does set construction in Australia, and word is he is and arrogant turd on set. So.
@@thomassmith9371 Thanks, buddy. Simu comes across as pretentious and arrogant. The Mark Wahlberg tweet is an ugly example. As a kid, Mark had a rough life with drug addiction problems. He committed the crime while on PCP and had to serve jail time. He said that was the moment he turned his life around. He cleaned up his act and spent years performing community outreach and raising money for charity. Simu Liu was ready to dog pile onto a guy that had already been punished, served his time, became a better person and gave back to the community. The incident happened decades ago and Simu wanted another pound of flesh. Wahlberg had a very tough life. Liu grew up in a well-to-do family (both of his parents were electrical engineers who carved a life out for themselves in the U.S.). No comparison. Liu said he wanted to use this opportunity to educate Wahlberg and do something good. Really? What exactly can Liu even teach him? Furthermore, Wahlberg had already done a great deal of public service and good. And Liu thinks he can just use him to promote his progressive politics? I think they're gonna need to use CGI just to get Simu's head through the door. He doesn't appear to be a genuine good guy.

This is the same actor who's complaining about his co start getting her own show, low pay on the show while he's getting a multiple million dollar contract alone from marvel
Those are things to complain about. They underpaid him and gave a show to a white actor out of everyone else. How is everyone supposed to see that?
@@rogerlouttit5451 Kim's Convenience was a (great) small show with small-time actors. Simu Liu was a nobody actor. He couldn't negotiate a better paying contract with his bone thin resume. Ins Choi has the rights to all of the main characters that came from HIS play that HE wrote.
