  • This video shows how we make our 2019 "Heart" leather Christmas ornament from start to finish. This is a relatively simple project that doesn't require a bunch of tools. In place of copper rivets, you could substitute Chicago screws or even speedy rivets if the post is long enough.

    ► LEATHER SUPPLIERS
Wickett & Craig - I typically order their "Tooling/Holster/Carving" vegetable tanned leather. I purchase their "Standard" grade, and I request that they split it down from a thicker hide so the back is as clean as possible.
Herman Oak - Unfortunately, H.O. requires you to buy leather in bulk from the tannery, and buying from distributors can be hit & miss. Springfield Leather sells "Herman Oak Premium Belt Bend", so I’ve been using this lately and have been very pleased with it.
The Leather Guy - I don't have a lot of experience with this leather, but the "Artisan's Choice" leather I've used has been very nice. The coloration is similar to Wickett & Craig. The thing I really like about The Leather Guy's website is that nearly every single hide shown on their site is a listing for the actual hide you'll be buying, complete with photos and a description of blemishes for that particular hide. Very cool that they do that!
District Leather - I've never personally ordered from them, but I've heard good things about their leather.
Acadia Leather - I've never purchased from here either, but I've also heard good things about their leather.
Horween Leather - At the risk of sounding repetitive, here's another I've never ordered from, but their leather is very well known.
Weaver Leathercraft - Most of what I order from weaver is buckles and tools, but they also sell leather.

Super off topic but do you use a leather sewing machine at all? If so, what do you recommend for a first time buyer? Thanks.

Hi Rob - I have a Cobra Class 4. I started with a Tippmann Boss. It was great for me, but a lot of people have problems with reliability. I don’t believe they make them any more. What will you be making primarily? If it’s smaller stuff like wallets, journal covers, etc., something like a Consew 206RB is great. There’s lots of different makers of these machines - I believe the original is a Juki - which was cloned by Consew, etc. If you’ll be working with thicker leather, 1/4” or more, a 441 clone is what you probably want. Regardless of the size, you want a triple-feed machine. That means it has a walking foot, needle feed and lower feed dog. Essentially, all three mechanisms work together to pull the leather into the machine. You also need to consider the arm length. Like a bandsaw, the arm length is the clearance between the needle and the frame casting on the right. The Boss was very small, but it was fine for holsters and belts. There’s a couple hand powered machines out there - while cheap, sometimes you really need both hands on the leather so a hand powered machine would be pretty frustrating at times. Weaver, I believe, just came out with on. Regardless of what you choose, all these machines hold their value really well on the used market. If you need to sell the machine in the future, you can probably get most, if not all of your money back when it sells.

Adams LeatherWorks awesome info sir. Thanks for the thorough explanation. I am doing mostly the smaller stuff like you mentioned but I would like to try some holster work which looks to be heavy spec. The machines certainly do start to all look the same after a while. Kind of confusing to the average consumer! 😂 I like the idea of the longer throat as I am trying my hand at some bags now. I am thinking a cylinder arm style with a flat bed attachment. Wish me luck! Haha. Cheers.
