      +teheyepatch I've been wondering whatever happened to the rest of the cast.
      Piama (Francis's wife) played a small role in The Three Stooges (2012) as a receptionist & Lois I guess had some TV show roles here & there.
      Oh yeah, Abe (Stevie's Father) is playing Bebop in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2 (2016).
      I wonder what became of Francis, Reese, Malcolm & Dewey.

    I have one question, just one:
    Why do so many directors think you can improve action scenes my making them really hard to see?

    • @titanjo1020
      @titanjo1020 9 лет назад +14

      it's a technique that's supposed to make you feel like you're in the movie experiencing everything first hand thus immersing you further into the movie
      however all it does is make us feel like we are going to barf and i really wish they would stop doing it

    • @schwarzerritter5724
      @schwarzerritter5724 9 лет назад +1

      Titan Jo That explains the shaky cam. Even though the eyes of real people would stay focused on the target, something that is impossible with current camera technology.
      But what about the extreme closeups and the frantic editing?

    • @musefanatical1
      @musefanatical1 9 лет назад +2

      I think in some cases confusion is the intended effect, the idea being that we should have no more an idea of what is happening than the lead character does.
      To me, that would make most sense towards the beginning, where characters probably don't know what is going on. It would make less sense towards the end.
      As it is, though, we should definitely be cutting back on the whole shaky cam nonsense. Action just looks better when you can tell what's going on, and if there isn't a particular reason for it, it's an unnecessary effect.
      TL, DNR: it makes sense when you think about it, but I also agree that generally the way it's used is stupid.

    • @schwarzerritter5724
      @schwarzerritter5724 9 лет назад +1

      Zachary Sieg The problem with that theory is your eyes will stay focused on what you are looking at. Why everything else will shake, your centre of view will stay sharp.
      And you will certainly not change your viewpoint every second.
      I understand what you mean, our protagonist got attacked by the police and fights them without actually knowing how.
      But I have the feeling the scene is only hard to see, because the director could not come up with a way an unarmed and confused man can dispose of several armed policemen without making it look absolutely stupid.

    • @titanjo1020

      Schwarzer Ritter i'm not saying that it works i'm just saying that was the intended result. it's still a shitty technique that needs to stop

      It's really best for the viewer to go into it treating the movie as a stand alone and not a reboot. Total Recall, RoboCop and Dredd remakes are all awesometacular for one simple reason. They are what we hoped the originals would be when we were watching the originals. Total Recall the original, yeah it was cool, but we knew it was limited by the special effects of the time. To me the camp of the originals push the movies towards a comedy side of the movie spectrum. I wanted action, the remakes deliver that.

    • @shredmaster2009
      @shredmaster2009 9 лет назад +7

      XCyclonusX Okay, the reboot of Dredd was better than the original simply because the original wasn't that good, but as for Total Recall and Robocop, they weren't necessarily full-on camp, but the humor was a big part of them. Both feature a fair bit of satirical elements that has come to be considered a trademark of films from Paul Verhoeven (who directed both of the originals). I haven't seen the Robocop remake (I saw a clip that looked really bad and turned me off to it completely), but I have seen the Total Recall redo and while far from bad, it lacked a couple things that made the original great, those being the aforementioned satirical elements and the extreme violence. I just watched the original Total Recall last night and while some of the effects now show their age (the faces of characters struggling to breathe on oxygen-less Mars are pretty funny), the Mars landscapes and sets within the city still look breathtaking. Better special effects do not make a better movie.

      Same, I liked this one, the other one, I haven't watched it because it just doesn't work for me, it's ironically the one that's too easy to dismiss and forget, someone called that a near classic and I'm like, Arnold's Terminator is a near classic or a pure classic but this? nah, I'd remember this one even 10 years later, like how I remember Shutter Island or Inception better then Titanic, if we refer to DiCaprio's movies, so, there's that ^^

    It’s weird because my Dad was a fan of Arnold, but he said the movies where Arnold really shined that hold up well were Terminator and Predator. He said comparing the two he actually felt like this was better to him in his opinion. He said the action is pretty well choreographed it’s not badly acted and the effects and cinematography at some points is just gorgeous.
    He said he really liked it. He actually said that he prefers this one to the old one.

    i disagree completely on the issue of whether we the audience Know or not that its real or in his mind. In the newer version i feel that we the audience are meant to know definitively that it is NOT just in his head. Where as in the Arnold version we honestly dont, and the ending reinforced that feeling that Wait oh shit, this is exactly what is asked for in his interview and this COULD in fact just be the end of his Mind Trip!!

    • @TMLCJLK
      @TMLCJLK 10 лет назад +6

      That’s a point I was shaking my head negatively during this review.
      The remake doesn’t leave space for interpretation, you know what things are. But the original is really debatable about if all was just in his head or not.
      And this makes me like the original more.

    • @spanishforyou123
      @spanishforyou123 10 лет назад +4

      TMLCJLK the original, if u watch it with the commentary, is actually a dream. It has been confirmed by the director. BUT ignoring that fact I will definitely agree with you that the original will keep you guessing. You seriously dont know if its real or not and you have to decide for yourself. it does a great job at keeping it up to the interpretation of the viewer. Unless you watch it with the commentary that is.

    • @TMLCJLK
      @TMLCJLK 10 лет назад

      spanishforyou123 Thanks for the info, I didn't know that. I never watched the commentaries.

    • @greyfox129
      @greyfox129 10 лет назад +7

      actually in the Director's Cut to the remake it adds 20 mins of more footage that actually keeps you guessing and the ending now adds a tiny scene that leaves it ambiguous and makes you wonder if he is dreaming or not. The commentary on the remake the director said that the Director's Cut scenes were removed because the studio pretty much implied that the audience is stupid and will be confused by it. But he added back in the Director's Cut because he gives us more credit than that.

    • @angryhonker5331
      @angryhonker5331 3 года назад

      I completely disagree with you on that.
      The original had scenes that told the audience that there was more than it just being in his head because of the conversations that the side characters were having that did not involve the main character Quaid (Especially so when he went to Recall). However you had none of that in the remake, really adding to the suspicion if it were real or not because it was mostly just from the main characters prospective. That and in the remake, shit started to hit the fan immediately after he got injected, (Which they actually started to do unlike the original; really leaving you wondering) It was not some time afterwards as they did in the original, and even in the original, the side characters had said that they didn't even upload the program. Which is really something that threw off the 'its all in his head' feeling.
      (Plus in the original, there were subplots with the side characters that made it feel that it wasn't just Quaid's dream, but actual events that were happening outside of him. AKA, his wife was the enemies 'old lady' as they put it.)
      The original and the remake both leave you wondering if it were real or just in his head. In my opinion, I think that the remake really handled it better than the original did. Especially with the ending, the remake really reinforced the thought of, 'Holy shit, was it all just in his head?!' When it shows that he didn't have the tattoo that he got when he went to rekall.
      None of this is to say that i don't like the original, because i absolutely love it. It is actually one of my favorite movies till this day and i have watched it more times than i can count. But i have to admit that the remake did a way better job than the original at making me question if it were all real or just in his head. They both have their pluses and minuses, but that factor is a serious minus for the original and a huge plus for the remake.
      (I know that this is like a 6 year old post, but whatever)

    This was only a decent/mediocre action movie whereas the one with Arnie was highly original, creative and fun.
    To those saying this one is closer to the short story, the original film was never meant to be an adaptation it was simply a catalyst that inspired the concept of the movie.

      i understand that you liked Arnolds version but those of us that liked the 2012 version is because as you said It's closer to the short story. That's where most haters of this movie make the mistake instead of comparing it to the short story (which most audience don't know about) they compare it to arnolds very loosely based version. Some just hate it but others just hate it out of nostalgia and for being loyal to Arnold.

    Just watched this movie. I didn't think it was as good as the original. The fights, acting, and tech were all better in the original.
    I didn't hate this movie. I got my scifi fix from it. The movie didn't flow very well and had a few to many plot holes or things that didn't make sense. I thought they would use dream logic to explain some things but they never did.
    The guy escapes from the police and the first place he goes is his old house. The police aren't waiting for him there. They do show up after a long time goes by.
    His friend comes back to wake him up. The friend wants him to shoot his lady friend. So the friend is lying. Lets just say he shoots his lady friend and doesn't wake up. The very next thing he would do is shoot the unarmed lying friend. The scene doesn't make sense because they didn't present a way to get him back.
    At one point there are these moving elevators that move in all directions. For some unknown reason they move at different speeds. One moves super fast to smash a robot while another moves slow giving them enough time to run out of the way. Basically the elevators move slow for the good guys and fast for the bad guys.
    The Recall place was legal and had ADs up all over the place but for some reason it was in the shady part of the town and the guy running it made it seem like it was a underground crime thing.
    There were a lot of stuff I just couldn't shut my brain down for. However, the tech of the world was fun to see.

    Both Total Recalls were awesome.I really liked this one. I took my son to see, and he had never seen the first one, so it was a new experience for him. It was fun for me too. I viewed the movie like a roller coaster. I knew what was going to happen, but that didn't make the twists less fun. The only real issue I had was that travel through the core like that is impossible, but then so is time travel and there's a lot of movies based on that. All in all I enjoyed the movie :)

    I got to say, due to quality of acting I preferred the new one. The original one was fresh and original when I saw (as I had not read the book yet), but Arnold and is rediculous one liners "consider that a divorce" and "hey Benny, screw you!" and then stabs him with the drill. Ach! Arnold does that though, Batman & Robin may have been watchable had Arnold been the only one removed from the movie, yeah, I said it (don't know if I actually believe that one though). New one is a little better.

    New one for sure. I can see where some people liked the original but not my cup of tea. The new one was little easier to follow and felt like if it were possible it could happen. Where as the original seemed to rely on being weird, bizarre and gross because it is sifi. Gabriel Krebs The old one wasn't hard to follow, it just does a better job of disguising it's exposition better than this one because studios now feel that audiences need everything conveyed to them verbally. As for the bizarre nature of the original, that's one of the charms of it for me. The extreme violence alone is entertaining enough, but I mean come on: where else can you see a midget prostitute standing on a bar and firing a machine gun into a crowded room of disfigured mutants?

    Compared to the original this movie sucks. It's overlong, dull, the dialog is horrible and the action scenes are never engaging or exciting. It's the opposite of everything said in this review. I'm surprised at you Jeremy. P.S. Just because an actress is hot shouldn't be the reason they get a pass for a bad performance. Kate is no Richter by any means. All they did was swap character motivations and events around from the other film, and even that didn't make it clever. Stick to the Arnold version.

    Total Recall is a 2012 American science fiction action film, based on the 1990 film of the same name and by extension the 1966 short story "We Can Remember It for You Wholesale" by Philip K. Dick.
    So yes it is based on the original film and they are both loosely based on the short story.

    huh did we watch the same thing? I think we did, buy this movie was terrible. At one point they climb out of the elevator thing at some 15000 km/h, nobody ever shoots Colin Farrell when he AGAIN gets himself captured; this movie is soo stupid.

    I just saw this today. And I like it better than the "old version". Then again I did read "We Can Remember it for You Wholesale" long before I saw the old version. And I thought Colin Ferrall did a better job than Arnie did... (just my 2¢ worth) But still all of your comments were valid. Its just that I feel the new crew carried the story so much better that I didn't care if I knew where it was going.

    I haven't seen this version yet, but do own the original movie on blue ray and it still kicks ass to this day. Me and my girl saw this trailer at The Dark Knight Rises and I told her all about it, and we watch the original one yesterday(8/3/2012) and it wasn't her cup of tea, but she like it. But now I have watch The Hunger Games because of that. Promise is a promise.

    I got the old one even on Blu Ray and I still wanna see this one and I probably will like, if not even love it, because of the sheer fact, that Cranston is in the movie. I mean seriously... Jeremy has a point. Why not put Bryan Cranston into every movie? Cranston as a dwarf in Hobbit? Check. Cranston as a sergeant or something in Dark Knight Rises? Check. Cranston as a sidekick for DiCaprio in Django? Check. I'd dig that guy in EVERY role in EVERY movie :D

    The remake was okay If you have never seen the cult classic by Verhoeven. I for one watched both so I can give my opinion, I prefer the original as Verhoeven is one of those complex directors like Terry Gilliam, Christopher Nolan, Darren Aronofsky and others I just cant remember at this moment.

    In the extended directors cut, there is the noticable abcense of the peace sign tatoo on his arm, hinting it may have all been a memory implanted by rekall.

    Good question. All I can say is if you see one first, it will ruin if for you for the other one. The new one is a virtual carbon copy when it comes to plot. Howerver they are both good in their own right.

    Exactly. I liked this movie. They can't let go of the past Total Recall. It's like saying the first phone ever made is better and more convenient than modern cell phones.

    Being I product of the 80s I'd say this version was OK but it doesn't hold a candle to Arnie's 1990 version. Probably the best thing you can say about the improvements by the new movie are the special effects. But the 1990 version was cutting edge for its time and the twists are great.

    I haven't seen the new one yet, but I highly doubt it'll be as memorable as the original
    What I really liked about the original was that It took a short Story that was semi-interesting and made a Fun Sci-Fi Action Adventure with Offbeat humor, I like how they created this mythology on mars about reactors that give an atmosphere, thats somthing i would've liked to have seen more of in Sequels but instead we get a remake oh well, I'll check it out for curiositys sake.

    I watched original and this new one, and I can't decide that one of them is my favorite. Second one has better action scenes and scenery is much better in last one. First recall had much more developed idea about changing memory, idea that was relativelly new in cinematic world. Actors are much better in last one, in my opinion. I would say that first recall is classic, while this one is pretty good remake.

    SPOILER ABOUT DIRECTOR'S CUT!!the directors cut is way better imo. ethan hawke appears in the holographic video saying that he is Carl Hauser revealing to quaid that both his memory and appearance were completely altered by the UFB. and Cohaagen says that (he could be lying) Hauser willingly let himself be changed that everything was a ruse to kill the resistance leader who in the DC is melinas father. and the alternate ending leaves you wondering if he's awake or dreaming.

    Not necessarily, the 1990 version was "loosely" based on the Phillip Dick novel. This movie was "based" on the 1990 production of "Total Recall." This means that this movie was entirely inaccurate to what it was "based on."
