    In 1993, it was clean, multiracial and safe. Then around 1995 things rapidly changed and most descent people moved out. By the time I left south Africa in 1999 it wasn't safe around Johannesburg. I am so glad to see Ponte again in a safe mode. 😍

      @@Bhebe40 are you racist? I'm not. Go at Ponte City and look at the archives if there are any. Then you will be surprised it was never an only white looking people's home. Maybe were it before 1990. I won't tell. I came to live there in early 90's and it was rainbowish but quite, clean, secure and tidy. Mostly families were there.

    Wow. This was a great video & I'm so glad I came across it - to think, from a thumbnail after watching a random video about 1970s Joburg.
    I liked your first video where you shared your experiences in Ponte & the surrounds & the brief history on Joburg & the building.
    (P.s. Alex is sooo cute! 🌼🥰)
    I certainly enjoyed this video even more because of how it really captures the humanity & the stories behind the people that stay at Ponte. I think you did that brilliantly & I must applaud the fact that you actually went back to meet & interview the people you spoke to because the building itself is not the whole story.
    So thank you for serving us this great content & for the courage to do so & big ups to Dlala Nje too for the positive difference they're making in this community. 💛
    I've easily subscribed & I hope you many more enriching travel adventures. ❤️

    thank you for your wonderful video. people make assumptions so quickly, but you wanted to ask questions and you saw the wonderful people that make up a community. not the sterotypes and assumptions of people outside of that

    Remember live there in 1996 almost every thing was new and a nice pub downstairs

    • @TravelTasteTrio
      @TravelTasteTrio  2 года назад +8

      The pub was actually changed into a youth center where the kids in the building can go to study, get free extra lessons and other upliftment classes. The center also offers them access to computers which is fantastic. The youth center is maintained thanks to Dlala Nje, the tour company that does the tours for Ponte. You can check it out on our "We Slept in Africa's Highest Residential Building" video. If you have a chance to support Dlala Nje, please do as they are one of the driving forces in changing the community for the better😀

      South Africa has a very high unemployment rate and more minimum wage is like $1.50 an hour. Maybe a bit less than that. This is actually not too bad and fyi everywhere in South Africa is dangerous. There is even violent crime in posh gated communities with 24 hour security. The economy is very volatile in SA and even if you once had a decent income it can be gone very easily with investors pulling out of the country and Eskom getting worse and more in debt. I know it's much easier to say ignorant things because you are too lazy to do a 5 min Google search on why most South Africans are in such situations but don't you feel bad to embarrass your parents by putting your foolishness on full display in such public comments on the internet? I'd feel bad to be that publicly ignorant because my parents didn't give me life so I could be that dumb with an internet connection.
