    Speaking of Qui-Gon, I think an interesting matchup for him would be against Valenthyne Farfalla. I personally think they're relatively on-par with one another, and thematically, it's amazing. The last Jedi to fight the Sith before they went into hiding pitted against the first Jedi to fight the Sith following their reemergence. Congratulations on the 10 year anniversary!

    Qui Gon is definitely an underrated fighter but it's hard to see how he wins this one. On a technique front Vader's relentless Djem style is more advanced then Qui Gon's retooled Ataru. On a physical front while Jinn is above average in hight and strength again Vader exceeds him. On top of that Vader has a near limitless amount of stamina which was one of the primary reasons behind Jinn's loss to Maul on Naboo and was blatantly evident after their skirmish on Tatooine. With the Force Jinn has been known to be powerful but painfully hesitant to use it in a fight whereas Vader is not only stronger but holds no such compunctions. I do not see how Jinn can win this.

      Well said

    • @morlath4767
      @morlath4767 2 года назад

      Yeah, pretty much this. Jinn's legacy as a Jedi has almost nothing to do with using the Force, and everything to do with his philosophy and impact on those around him. While Vadar might not be as naturally quick and agile as Maul, he balances this out with raw power (both physical and Force), and is far more willing to mix in his Force powers when fighting. Unless Jinn forsaw his own death and allowed it to happen, PM Jinn would get battered aside.

    • @mc_rysiek5277

      I mean... there are multiple sources blatantly proclaiming PT Force users as superior to OT Force users, both in terms of power in the Force and skill with the lightsaber.
      Personally, I think the only way Vader can win this is by going full Soresu mode and capitalizing on his superior stamina and durability.

    • @morlath4767
      @morlath4767 2 года назад

      @@mc_rysiek5277 I really have no idea how you came to this conclusion. Even by _only_ going by the films, Vader is a relentless killing machine who only lost to Luke because he was hesitant to kill his own son. Jinn was in a battle with Maul twice, and both times he essentially avoided using the Force and suffered massively from stamina issues.

    • @mc_rysiek5277
      @mc_rysiek5277 2 года назад

      @@morlath4767 What conclusion? That Vader can win via attrition? I doubt I have to explain why Vader has better stamina than Qui-Gon.
      Are you going to pretend that Vader was the only one holding back in that fight? It's not like Luke disengaged and turned his lightsaber of on at least three separate ocassions...
      Speaking of Maul, you realize that Maul's doppleganger decisively outfought Vader, right? If I am being honest, Qui-Gon performed better than Vader against Maul.

    First of all, I wanted to say thank you Jensaarai, for being the most thorough and professional Legends Versus RUclipsr. Your projects are always insanely well prepared and researched, which makes them a pleasure to watch and re-watch as well(I've seen Count Dooku vs Galen Marek like a hundred times and Darth Traya vs Inquisitor Jerec probably even more).
    Secondly, I wanted to propose a match-up, The Valiant Knights, Antares Draco versus Lucien Dray. The presence of the first one would be a good addition to the roster of characters from the Legacy period, one that does not fall into the ranks of the Sith. Lucien would be a bridge to your old Lucien Dray versus Galen Marek video, a connection for the old school fans. Both men had similar themes of darkness combined with loyatly and a saving female figure, both started as something and gradually became something very different, their final fates a fitting commentary about the fickle nature of Fate. Their styles and approaches as well as motivations have a pattern of strong similarities and stark differences. An interesting fight me thinks, in terms of the technicalities of the duel, the approach to fencing and fighting in general has changed so much between their respective periods - it will be exciting to see them contrast.
    Thank you.

    Have you considered using Roan Shryne in a vs? I personally think he'd be a good match for Qui Gon. Both are tier 3 in my opinion and are veery unusual Jedi for the time period. I also personally believe him to be a Niman practioner, but unlike Cin Drallig his version is much more practical for the battlefield similar to how Qui Gon's modified Ataru is more practical than standard Ataru. Roan's odd relationship with the Force is also an interesting foil to Qui Gon's reverence for it. Just an interesting matchup and I feel like th vs community is really sleeping on Roan. Dude made Vader resort to his Force abilities and while he wasn't Vader's equal as a duelist, he was definitely fair competition which is more than we can say for most Jedi or Sith

    Can't believe it's been 10 years since you started this series, that felt like eons ago. So much has changed about RUclips and the world at large, even my personal life. Considering you're one of the last channels standing out of that glut of Star Wars Versus series that arrived just prior to the House of Mouse takeover and pillaging of Legends canon, you must be doing something right =)
    As for this battle: I think the original vid had the right verdict and I have no intention of arguing otherwise. Vader 10/10 on even ground, all day long. That said, I look forward to your reappraisal/remastering of this matchup and if there's any new observations that can be gleaned from further analysis.

    Alright I'm coming in with my analysis for the original video. Here I go...
    The original versus video of Qui Gon Jinn Vs Darth Vader is certainly not the most legendary in terms of editing and analysis but it is certainly legendary for opening the gateway to such matches. While I personally do feel the match is a tad one sided I do feel there are some interesting similarties in regards to their lightsaber dueling methods. Both Jinn and Vader reworked the techniques of their original styles (Djem So and Ataru respectively) to better compensate with their evolving situations (Jinn's waining stamina, Vader's complete cybernetic overhaul) Both were also muscle tanks that while capable of acrobatics never really employed them unless nessecary and instead operating as barbaric power duelists. Although never actually confirmed before I personally have theorized that Jinn did add elements of both Makashi and Djem So into his Ataru form (The blade binding/dynamic saber thrusts of Makashi and Djem So to enhance the powerbased fighting of Jinn's overall method. Interestingly this parralells Vader's own fighting style where he uses Djem So and Makashi as his primary forms and Ataru more as a backbone for implimented physical combat and occasional although rare acrobatics among the rest of the seven forms.

    Congrats on your 10 year anniversary Jensaarai1!
    I dont remember the new first video of yours I watched that got me excited and into your channel.
    I think it was Teneb Kell vs Nadar? And that was 6 years ago.
    its always fun to do remakes of old videos. But I feel Vader still dominates Jinn. Jinn isnt strong enough either physically or the force to overpower Vader.
    Though Im sure there is some psychological fuel Jinn could use to pull a win ala episode 6 Luke?
    0:48 Holy crap Im touched. My essay comments are basically me ranting every little random thought that comes to mind.
    And Darth Wredd vs Exal Kresh is 4 years old? I feel old. Btw, I stand by that original post. Darth Wredd is an edgelord.

    Darth Vader would be my first guess to who wins, but as I have not looked properly into it, I can not say. But since it is your 10th anniversary for your VS videos, perhaps you in the coming time (even if you begin working on them during the next year would count in my book) could bring back some charaters you have used in the past but have not used in a while like K'Kruhk, Tholme, Kit Fisto or Satele Shan (just to name a few) and introduce a few new charaters like T'ra Saa, Yaddle or Darth Stryfe. It would also be nice to see the return of your more different ligthsabers video with the like of Corran Horn, Ki-Adi Mundi or Kazdan Paratus (like you did with Darth Vader, Count Dooku, Darth Bane, Exar Kun). Looking forward to the celebration video, will Certainly be interesting.

    Personally, I had an idea running in my head for days, after watching Vosa vs Aayla and coming across a comic, consider it a proposal for your "obvious verdict" videos : Luminara Unduli and Aayla Secura vs Asajj Ventress. How would it actually play out, under the assumptions that both Jedi already faced her before and this is EU Ventress ?

    Hello Jensarai1. I am very excited for this coming video! I am using this as an excuse to vent about Form IV Ataru - being that it is of course Qui-Gon's preferred form. It is personally my least favorite of the 7 Forms. It is in my view the least practical. Putting aside for a moment the fact that all the jumps, flips and spins would be useful in any real fight, as you've discussed in other videos it is established in the lore that Form IV is weak against multiple opponents and generally has both a poor defense and is exhausting to use. This means that the situations where it could actually be used is relatively small. Ideally in a one-on-one duel against a weaker opponent that can be quickly overwhelmed and neutralized. In a protracted duel against an opponent of equal, near equal, or greater skill, the Ataru practitioner would likely tire themselves out and then get overwhelmed (poetic justice really). It is a style that banks on aggression - given that it is literally called "the Aggression Form" - and yet Form VII is obviously much more aggressive. As I see it, seems to have the weakness of Niman in that it's not great anything but it lacks Niman's incredible practicality and versatility. It's good in a duel but Form II is better, it has a powerful offense but Form VII has an even more powerful one. It is versatile - at least in offense - but Form VI as mentioned is more so. Furthermore, it is my opinion that an absolute master of any other form - all else being equal - should be able to beat an absolute master of Form IV. A Shii Cho master slice through the Ataru master in less than a second, whilst the Makashi master would impale them in less than a second, a Soresu master would wait them out and cut them down as soon as they got tired, which wouldn't take too long, a Djem So/Shien master could just block and counter in two moves. A Niman master would show our poor Ataru master what it really means to overwhelm and opponent and come at them at all angles. And lastly the Juyo/Vaapad master would show our poor Ataru master would agression really means and likely would hack him to bits. In my view Ataru is useful only as a supplementary form to be paired with others. Or to be used as a training tool but not actually useful in a real (Star Wars) fight, at least not by itself. I also find all the flips, jumps and spins, to be utterly ridiculous and aesthetically distasteful. All this is to say that I find Form IV Ataru to be by far the most overrated of the 7 Forms and I find its popularity both among various Star Wars characters and among fans both odd and irritating. But with all that said, I find Qui-Gon's retooling of it to make it more practical to be a testament to his skill. What are your thoughts?
    P.S. I find the most underrated form to be Form I and I wish it was featured more, particularly as a primary form. I wish we could see a Jedi or Sith who mastered it absolutely and used it exclusively or almost exclusively. We have only 2 that I am aware of that come close to this. Those being of course Kit Fisto and Lucien Draay but they do not compare in either power or skill to the likes of Mace WIndu and Count Dooku. Imagine if a Master of their caliber mastered Shii Cho to its highest level. What would that be like? I actually think it'd be like a cross between Windu and Dooku. Being both powerful and precise. With a knack for finishing fights in less than a second. Much like a modern practitioner of Iaido. What are your thoughts on this as well? Thanks.

    Congrats on the decade of amazing work!
    I think I mentioned this matchup previously, but Asajj Ventress vs Shado Vao has been living rent-free in my brain for ages.
    I remember you mentioning in Talon vs Kenobi you saw an equivalence between Kenobi and Vao, so flipping that script Ventress immediately came to mind!
    Thematically the two are young prodigal talents in combat;
    ●Ventress a covert agent of the Sith from an era just prior to the collapse of the Jedi Order working to bring about their downfall.
    ●Vao a jedi knight fighting for survival in an era after the One Sith shattered the New Jedi Order.
    Both are primarily swordsbeings while still making proactive and powerful use of force abilities. Both have gone toe-to-toe with the greats of their eras and lived to tell about it.
    Personally the most interesting aspect is their shared use of reconfiguring weapon-sets; but taking that concept in opposite directions: Ventress either using a single blade, Jar'Kai, or linking them into a saberstaff; Vao with a single blade, archaic short-hafted saberstaff, or using a telescopic hilt to shift his grip to a full saberstaff.
    Personally it's too close to call, it's one of those Kao Cen vs Kas'iim matches where whomever wins does so by a razor thin margin. I'd rather leave the verdict in your capable hands...Also because I know you appreciate a good Ventress matchup!

    I love all your work and use it as examples of Lightsaber Form theory when talking about Lightsabers in a Martial context, and I love how you keep the In-Universe considerations, like Qui-Gon modifying Ataru into a well rounded Full Fledged Martial art when classically it wasnt so, and the out of universe context, like the idea that Qui-Gon was retconned as a Djem-So specialist when he was clearly defined as Form IV from Day One, in balance in your explanations for further Holistic context. I'd still love to see the video you mentioned about the Marks of Contact and moves that originated in Form I but spread out to other forms, I assume Falling Leaf, Sai, Jung Ma, Flowing Water and Center of Being and the like will be in it, and I eagerly look forward to it, as I often use your Shii Cho video and your old video about the Situational Origins of the Lightsaber, as a Begining intro for my students. It's good to see you still going strong. I've always loved analysing things and watching you through this channel has been a true delight for me.
    One thing I'm interested in seeing is a redux of your video on the shorts battle, Darth Malgus vs Darth Vader. I'm mainly interested to see what, if anything, has changed considering your more experienced outlook on each character and ways of analysing their combative and tactical abilities. Even if the verdict remains the same as before, even if it remains a short video, I'd be interested to see your current views on such a match-up.
    Also I remember the first comment of mine you gave a heart to, that being my analogy of the hypothetical fight between Heavyweight boxers Muhammad Ali and Mike Tyson on your latest versus video of Yoda vs Darth Vader. (Though that heart seemed to disappear after I edited a grammatical error in that comment). I was hopeful that such an analogy wouldn't be lost on you, as I'm wholly unaware if you're at all familiar with either boxer. But to see my comparison of the two hypothetical match-ups earn a heart from you, it helped to confirm that what I said had merit there, at the very least in your eyes and has improved my confidence in my own thinking and analysis skills. So I thank you so much for that.
    Whatever match-ups you have planned, I know I'll always be intrigued and eager to see them. Final thing, love your view of the new Disney Canon. If Legends is deemed superior for Versus videos, then as you say, "Legends all the way!".

    Regarding the match up it really is a stomp for Vader in my opinion. Vaders blade work is so much more advanced than Qui Gon and the same goes for his force power level and abilities. Qui Gon is no slouch but he’s utterly outclassed by Vaders insane strength and he’s not going to out speed him either. Let’s be honest if Anya Qu’ro for example isn’t blitzing Vader then Qui Gon wont be either. He’s also not going to be attacking him in unorthodox and unique ways with the force either.

    Just finished watching the original. I think it has a great baseline. There was three parts I thought very interesting though. One is on predictability, at 4:16 in the original you say Qui-Gon is extremely predictable. Where at 6:17 you say Vadar is crisp and unpredictable. When I put those two together I reached your original empire strikes back verdict. Though I think you should discuss Don-maw(The sith technique to goad opponents. Forget how to spell it) I think that would have a large part in the predictability issues and refine why Vader easily wins. along with 3:03 you say Qui-Gon focuses on strength and power which plays into Vader's style both physically and with form V. Another idea is to look over the effects masters had on padwan's. I think Kenobi's Sokan was Vader's vice, Though I don't know Dooku's for Qui-Gon. But Dooku being a form II specialist I find it odd Qui-Gon would be weak to form V defensive counters. I don't know a thing about Dooku and Qui-Gon's training though. Another odd thought is mentioning Qui-Gon's rebellious side and distance from council norms. Which reminds me of Anya Kuro. She herself had her dealings with Vader but she was more combat orientated then Qui-Gon and also strongly connected to the force.With Qui-Gon I think it was his laid back counselor approach that is limiting him in combat scenarios. Though I think re-exploring it and fleshing it out more is a great idea. I do appreciate your research and knowledge put into your vs videos they are very enjoyable.

    What would be interesting to see are direct matchups between TCW characters and their original counterparts. I think this would be good to demonstrate how nerfed TCW characters are in general in comparison to the glory of the originals. A TCW Grievous vs. Actual General Grievous would be a good example. They are so vastly different from one another that they can even scarcely be considered the same character anymore, not just in combat ability but also in personality and tactics. TCW fans are so insufferable about how great the show is, but most of them simply favor it because it was the first Star Wars media they consoomed and seem to lack the ability to ingest other forms of the IP simply because they're not as shiny and new.
    Other interesting matchups would perhaps be response videos toward matchups other RUclipsrs have made that you disagree with. While some people complain about your overall presentation style being "too negative" or "too critical," I actually think the style suits you best and I most enjoy your videos where you are channeling the dark side, so to speak.
    Finally, I'd like to see more KOTOR and KOTOR II matchups (i.e. more Kreia, Revan, Sion, etc.) They don't have to be between exclusively KOTOR characters but it would be nice to see at least one of them in a matchup with a more modern Jedi or Sith character.

      Honestly, no. Insulting the show is not going to do the show or anyone any favors. Again, I am a fan of TCW and I can freely admit it’s flaws. I don’t like TCW grievous the same reasons no one here likes him. I have mixed feelings on ventress’s retcons. I’m not saying this because I’m a triggered fanboy, because if I am, why am I admitting the shows flaws? I’m saying that complaining about the shows flaws is not going to do anyone favors, whether youre a fan of the show or not. It’s a waste of time.
      Instead, I propose this. How about doing a rewrite of TCW? Write out and fix the show’s flaws by developing your own version. Also, Jen already did a livestream of TCW and what and why he didn’t like about it. I doubt he’s going to create a review of a show he already stated he doesn’t care for unless it’s a “retrospective” review of the show as a follow up to his previous livestream

    Damn, to think that I was at the end of Junior year when this came out. I still had a love for Star Wars and finding out more of the EU at that time.
    As for the match up, I'm of two minds. If both knew who they were fighting, Qui Gon could win but not in a lightsaber battle. Instead, I think Jinn would appeal to Anakin and try to talk Vader down akin to Luke. Though the question of if Jinn got through to Anakin is up in the air.
    However, when dropped in cold, Vader would be the victor. His physicality and more active use of the Force makes this apparent. Jinn would be able to contend at first and could land hits, but this wouldn't last. So, yeah, you got it right the first time though maybe a bit closer than one thinks.

    Yeah Boi! *Cough* I mean, must excellent news, good sir.
    Edit: Also since we have a few essay comments, might as well add my two cents.
    In terms of raw power, Vader has the advantage, hands down. While Qui-gon is far from the conventional Ataru master and has a greater understanding of the higher mysteries of the Force, I don’t think he has the might to overcome Vader’s suit.
    The major advantage that might make it Jinn’s game is the emotional baggage he’ll likely give Vader. This was the man that set Anakin on the road he walked and it’s clear that he does think fondly of him (his outburst to Obi-wan just before he was knighted and in that vision he had of an alternate future where he didn’t fall to the dark side where he named his son Jinn). If there ever was a Jedi that could shake Vader enough to reconsider, Qui-gon would be it.
    Would it be enough to give Qui-gon a victory? Probably not, but it’s certainly something to consider.

  • @andybrummel5555

    This should be a fun banger! Qui-Gon Jinn's version of Ataru will not hold up against what Vader brings to the table. As far as the force goes, Vader is leaps and bounds more agressive with his force powers. I cannot see any situation in which my beloved Jinn, claims a win.

    I will likely edit this comment once I've had time to properly condense my thoughts but, despite how underrated a fighter Qui Gon is, I don't see him getting out of this one.
    Do not get me wrong, he's a competent fighter, and a great force adherent but this fight will likely come down to how their blade to blade combat matches up with one another as Qui Gon is usually too hesitant to use the force in many of his engagements with other force sensitives.
    With this in mind, this wouldn't be a stomp, as Qui Gon would give Vader a run for his money in terms of bladework, but, in Vader-esque fashion, after the early fight, Vader would not only adapt to his unique style, but he'd exploit his lack of stamina in a long running engagement.
    Qui Gon's options from here are to either run or die, but this is a versus match, so, I think we know how this ends.

    • @lapplandkun9273
      @lapplandkun9273 2 года назад

      I honestly think qui gon would still be at a disadvantage even in the early stage of the fight. His make things as you go along approach would be terrible against Vader’s calculating approach.

    • @HighPhoenix1754
      @HighPhoenix1754 2 года назад +1

      @@lapplandkun9273 Not exactly. Vader's calculating approach is based on established forms.
      Qui Gon is unorthodox so it would keep him in the fight for the early fight, especially considering that Vader's early game calculating approach is more of a probing assault like Makashi, rather than the destructive cleaves one would expect from Form 5.
      However, once the mid fight comes, Vader would likely turn things up, unleash the form five cleaves that he's known for and things would go down hill from there for Qui Gon. Qui Gon just DOESN'T have the agility or technique required to either exploit Vader's weaknesses or to subvert his technique. And all of the aspects that Qui Gon IS bringing to the table: Strength, Defense, and Finesse... Vader has that in spades.
      Vader ends up folding him like an Omelet, but Qui Gon is still skilled and unorthodox enough to remain in the fight long enough to not make this a stomp.

  • @dianabarnett6886
    @dianabarnett6886 2 года назад

    Qui-Gon is certainly no pushover. I'd call him an above average Jedi when it comes to combat. However, "above average" just isn't going to cut it against someone of Vader's caliber. Physical ability, Force power and usage, lightsaber skills, tactical acumen....Vader's got all the edges. Qui-Gon will make Vader work for it, but I think the outcome is obvious.

  • @drachna
    @drachna 2 года назад

    Hmm... I think that Jinn is outclassed in terms of developed skill, combat effectiveness both with and without the lightsaber, and in terms of force power and force abilities. With that being said, I'd say that he's faster, taller and nearly as strong as Vader, even if his stamina would burn out fairly quickly. He might have a reach advantage as well. I reckon that he might give Vader a better fight than ROTJ Luke did, but Vader would be going in for the kill, so he probably wouldn't lise any limbs. If Maul can beat Jinn, then Vader definitely can.

    Given the power level video of Qui-Gon Jinn Vs Darth Vader, there is no way someone who would be 20 times weaker than someone who last ten seconds in that fight with ten seconds being a generous number to give there, Qui-Gon would die in one hit in that fight, and Vader would only get that immensely power by either concentrated force power or by using his full power. The fact that a Darth Maul clone was able to put up a good fight against Vader in the legends continuity should indicate that Qui-Gon should not be that inferior to Vader in a fight and while do I understand why you guys aren't for ABC logic in Star Wars that doesn't mean ABC logic doesn't have credential in these matchups, meaning Qui-Gon could put up a better fight against suppressed Vader, who rarely uses his full power.

    I’m in favor of Vader, but it’s honestly a lot closer than many would believe. Vader has quite a few examples of anti-feats, accolades and scaling, so much so that I think it would be wrong to ignore them. Vader has a lot of big wins, but quite a few losses, and if you go off of word of god quotes, Vader isn’t that overwhelmingly impressive at all. There are plenty of quotes from Lucas, Gillard, and the like which hurt Vader, such as calling him and Ben crippled old men in comparison to Prequels era Jedi, highly implying that Vader didn’t use the Force against Ben because the latter was more powerful (and going as far as to put Ben several tiers above Vader) and the like. Realistically, this should put Vader well below ROTS Kenobi, which is also supported by Vader basically losing to Resurrection Maul (yes he did kill Maul, but Maul was in control most of the fight).
    Don’t get me wrong, Vader has his strengths, and you shouldn’t take what Lucas and his group said and blindly run with it, but it’s worth noting that they were the highest form of canon for the EU, so these statements shouldn’t be ignored either.

      Beg your pardon but I have to respectfully disagree. There is nothing childish or ridiculous about analysing a character's combative capabilities. It's just as valid a part of writing as anything else. I myself enjoy writing both fan-fiction and original fiction, and when it comes to writing fight scenes there is a lot of thought that needs to be put into them.
      I need to ask myself, "how does this character fight? What are their strengths and weaknesses? What kind of training did he/she have? Does it fit their personality and mindset? How do I keep their portrayal consistent without being repetitive?" and so on. "How they are swinging a saber or throwing a punch" needs to fit the character's background. For example if the character is a Kung Fu expert then you need to ensure that they are using Kung Fu technique rather than Western boxing.
      Again, determining a character's combative capabilities requires a lot of thought and effort. It is not childish or ridiculous in the slightest.
