Us: what the fuck are kilometers Europe: What the fuck are miles

The Kanuckers up north of us in the USA use that stuff.. Canada used to be like us and now they are a quite foreign country with their dear leader at the helm..
It was fun. Just proves the antenna makes the radio. Those stubbies on FRS are great for close proximity and line of sight. Next test will be a couple of Radio Shack handheld CBs on CH14 and see what we get. I am sure line of sight with the UV5R we could have made 5kms easy, heck we proved it with the CT-32 FRS radio.
That was a freaking awesome test you guys ran, sounds beautiful and clear. Wow! Thank you so much!! Outstanding buy. First like!! That would be awesome if you guys can post a Google maps picture to see the distance between you both.
The other day I was inside my house using my Baofeng UV5RH Pro Max with a 31" center loaded antenna and I was just scanning and got a reply from a repeater about 30 miles away on 147.045mhz. So I called CQ and somebody from another city 15 miles away answered my call and we talked for a while. We were both connected via the repeater. I know that repeater is high on the hill but no way my little handheld can reach that far. I had no idea why that happened.
That squelch issue and no full duplex however is what makes these radios not the best for sat operations. I have tried to use them before. You almost require 2 radios to perform properly.
I wonder what the results would be if you rode your bike and Gary stay at one position? I was just going to say, Gary inside the vehicle would make a difference for sure.
Sure is, I am sure the 17" antennas I have would also do wonders no doubt. Thanks for watching.

I wonder if they are running narrow FM or wide and that 5 watts is most likely 3.5 watts.. He says the guy is using the HT inside the vehicle and that is choking the test especially for 70cm.. Wonder what it would be with an external antenna on the Jeep and using a power plug.. I have made close to 200 mile contacts on UHF with a half watt from my house using a 5 element vertical beam..
Thanks Dude. Trying to keep things real and not give people false hope or misunderstanding when it comes to gear. Not only can you get lost and turned around only feet off a trail in the Boreal, you can lose comms quick with a hunting party or on a hike. I will be doing one with Uniden 40 channel handhelds next. Them maybe after that do some tests with better antennas. Cheers Fred VE3FAL
