Everyone talks about the brilliance of Townes Van Zandt singing-songwriting, and guitar playing but what about his storytelling, one of the very best storytellers of all time, As the great Rory Gallagher would say to his audience after a blistering gig/concert, Rory would say Thanks A Million for coming to the show, Will I say thanks a zillion Townes
Saw him at the Speakeasy in NYC after AT My Window came out. I was a few feet away from him and didn't know much about Townes. I sat there stunned through the entire set. The most powerful singer/songwriter I've ever had the privilege of experiencing.
Great poets and troubadorus aren,t put here for those who can't listen any more than thunder storms are put here for those who won't go outside to see their glory. Just try to listen. Thank you Townes for telling us about it.
Saw Townes some in the 70s when I lived in Austin, but rarely in later years. This two-part video starkly shows where he ended up -- where the road of someone following his own genius, inner voices and dreams can lead. It can lead to high, and low, places. I wonder if the trips to the high places were worth slogging through the low ones. I hope they were for him. He sure left some beautiful things for the rest of us.
Oh, Townes. You were so tired here. Thank you for still giving all you had to give in this video and at that time in your life. Many blessings to your beautiful children. I know the road was your life, and they knew, too, but I do believe you loved them so.
He was so smart, so handsome, so much heart... his lyrics are amazing, and what a great fingerpicker! He must've been easy to fall in love with...but absolute hell to live with or love long-term. I feel so sad for his children, but I'm glad he had them; I'm sure he was, too.
This is reminiscent of seeing Townes at the Ark, in Ann Arbor, months before he left us. You can feel the brilliance and the pain, sometimes simultaneously. That night in Ann Arbor, when he finished "Katie Belle Blue" he said he was so happy that Jerry-Jeff didn't write it. I laughed profusely, while others nearby didn't see the humor. Thank you for the words put together Townes. Nobody can do it quite like you.
I jammed one night in a tipi with a banjo player who said he played some with Townes. Ever since I wrote songs that would wake me in the night and I would just write em as they was playing in my head. Townes been with me since that time.
How lucky I was to see Towns in Cork, “ the lobby bar “ .. now gone .. 😢 & in Galway “ the Roisin Dinh” .. songs just poured out of his being .. heart & mind .
God God how lucky were you, I’m Irish from the north. I just came across Towns about a year ago. I fell in love with his music, would have given anything to have seen him. Luck was sure on your side.
Everyone else said it all,and thanks for all that you people said.............I could have hung out forever with Townes. I wish Ihad known he was in Ireland, I would have traveled anywhere to get to know him.........almost nobody knows or has heard of him among MY peers.......they wouldn't" get" him anyways.
Such a lovely talent.. Even loaded up, rambling and guitar out of tune, he touches us through the pain. He speaks of another's suicide as if it's a normal progression. A sad genius lost way to soon.

Beautiful and painful, indeed. Honestly, I had to "mind over matter" the first five minutes of Part 1 in order to power through it and keep watching. In the end, the beautiful won out over the pain.
@@AtkaEve2 I saw him in a small club in Austin in 1980 -- pleasure and pain all at once. To see and listen to one of the greatest poets/artists/soulists ever to stumble onto this earth. To experience in the flesh the man who sang my heart for years....and the pain of hearing and seeing him so obliterated with alcohol and/ or drugs he couldn't even finish his gig. And not feel one ounce of judgement or pity, knowing first hand similar sources and intensity of feelings too hard to withstand. Wondering if I'm grateful to have always been spared even the temptation of easing the pain with abusive substances because they don't work in my body (thank you Mama)... or if I would trade places with Townes, if I could turn the pain into music and words with even a tenth the genius of his. Bob Dylan is truly blessed to have this rare gift alongside an equally rare constitution hardy enough to handle it. Earth is poorer and heaven richer with those who like TVZ were taken too soon.
Reading these comments. I just don't think people know artists. Yeah, he lived a lot of life, ups, downs, yada yada... he isn't rambling here, he's not incoherent. He's an ARTIST. he's expressing himself.
Thanks for sharing both parts. I saw Townes in a club in Colorado back in the 80's and been a fan ever since. Kinda lost track of him as back then we didn't have the internet. He was the real deal of a small venue performer/.
People who don't know him it's because they have no clue what good country / folk music is ... He was and extremely talented songwriter . Most Americans listen to the commercial crap on the radio. Commercial media sucks in this country.
One of the coolest, bad ass singer songwriters of our lifetime. His lyrics are pure Americana. He’s not a goth artist. He’s more of an American poet and truth teller. He’s up there with Bob Dylan as our music poet laureate.
loved when Steve Earle said he'd stand on Bob Dylan's coffee table and tell him to his face that Townes was the best songwriter to ever live...I personally don't have to have a "best" love townes and bobby dylan and Iris dement etc etc etc
haha hell yeah, steve earle actually says he'll stand on bob dylan's table in his COWBOY BOOTS and say that, it gives some aditional impact to the statement
You could try atubecatcher. That way you can download RUclips-vids in any way you like. You could turn it into a MP3-file, MP4, or just download it as a video on your computer. Hope this helps! =)
I love Townes' music. Damn he aged for being such a handsome guy. His life is so similar to John Denver's. I guess you could call them spiritual soul mates. Did John and Townes know each other? They are about the same age and died at about the same age.
@Tanker XL That`s pretty harsh but I bet his son learned to never listen to or trust anyone and to never kill a living creature just because someone told you to without thinking about it first. js
His heart attack was his suicide. The booze and heroine didn’t do it. Wish I could have seen him, I was just 5 years too young. He used to play at club hey hey in Houston 5 yrs before I started working at the Satellite just down the street
ChrisAndTommy GoodTimeFolkRockShow , it’s from the early to mid 90s I think. It was given to me by a friend that said there was only one copy of it in existence.
It's not always about being in tune, as in key. The KEY is to be "In Tune" with your heart, your mind, your most vulnerable self. Therin lies the Beauty of Townes VanZandt.
@Tom MorningDew I'm from Upstate New York, and I think Townes was one of the best singer songwriters ever! Maybe not just a Texas thing, but a country thing...
He's having a rough night here. Probably deep into a bottle. I think he might have been done with the needle and spoon by this time though. Not sure. See him at his best. Check out: Live at the Old Quarter, Carnegie Hall:A Gentle Evening with Townes Van Zandt, Rear View Mirror Start there. He's one of the greatest American singer songwriters to ever live.

His songs expressed all he experienced true genius stands on the lines between both worlds
Beautiful comment man.
Wish we all had one last chance to see him. He soothes depression somehow.
Mark Browning well put
Oh, Townes. You were so tired here. Thank you for still giving all you had to give in this video and at that time in your life. Many blessings to your beautiful children. I know the road was your life, and they knew, too, but I do believe you loved them so.
My Dad was a rambling man too. I totally understand it. I certainly hope Townes's kids can understand their Dad just the same. ❤

Maggie... its almost as if you think he can hear you.
God love you, Townes.
You ached like we all do, only you didnt hide it.
Nicely said
I think that’s the true beauty of Towns.
I love Townes Van Zandt so much!

I wish I had been there that night.
one of a kind. i keep finding new songs. i saw almost eveybody in the 60s but never him. rip

Thanks for sharing this rare footage of a great songwriter.
One of my very favorites . 🦠
His face has lived etched deep into it!

Hauntingly Beautiful …I love Townes songs so much.!! ❤️ 😩❤️😘❤️🤧
I just checked out your posting today you're doing a great service to the rest of us RUclips addicts.
God Bless Townes - Fabulous post, thank you.
Technically we all have been touched or tortured by Townes Van Zant ...his words by some of the greatest performers of our time
Thank you for sharing this video!

Thank you for posting this, towerscope.
thank you thank you for sharing this with the rest of us. hearing Townes talk and perform always makes me feel like I’m coming home.
I love all of Townes late performances, he was too pure one could see right through him. Painful but true.
Holy gosh, beautiful and painful at the same time. That's Townes

I can sure relate to this, maybe that's what draws me back to this great song writer time after time.
You`re a pretty good song writer yourself Mark. :)
So glad you posted these!!

It just goes to show you; "if you don't laugh you'll cry."
LOL "did you buy that new truck for me to leave home in?.... OF COURSE" greatest story ever
Oh, I love this story. too good. xxooxx
Your welcome! He was quite gifted.
Love that man!
Passion and pain, or pain in the passion. Either way, it is something to watch.
+Shawn Viland fuck yeah
Townes was a winner who for some reason needed to lose .
Not sure how stating the facts is at odds with being humble, but thanks for the input anyway. You hero
Excellente vidéo d'un formidable artiste. A few people knows him, here, in France, and I just wonder if he is well known in the USA.
Known somewhat but not nearly as much as deserved. All great musicians know of him though.
Not well known while alive more so after he passed. But isnt that the way it goes? 🤔
People who don't know him it's because they have no clue what good country / folk music is ... He was and extremely talented songwriter . Most Americans listen to the commercial crap on the radio. Commercial media sucks in this country.
Love it.
Probably the album "No Deeper Blue," which was recorded in Ireland with Irish musicians.
Thanks mister Towerscope!

Classic Townes
yeah! all God's children need a little spring, ya betcha TVZ, man you got it so right on that song!!!
Texas singer songwriters rule!!
I was able to see Guy Clark 4 times but, I missed Townes, there is still Steve Earle to see.
Your welcome!
Such a gentle man
buenisimo . amigo
BUY THE ALBUM DAMMIT !!!!!!!!!!!
Way too soon. Only the good die young and if there really is a heaven man they got a hell of a band.
6 years later... the candle that burns the brightest burns out twice as fast.
8 years later... better to burn out, than to fade away.
Townes, don't go my friend
@towerscope
Very much indeed as I have listen to all of his songs over the years.
Always blew my mind that he’d play to 8 people, and I just have to think they’re crying as to why they ain’t clapping
loved when Steve Earle said he'd stand on Bob Dylan's coffee table and tell him to his face that Townes was the best songwriter to ever live...I personally don't have to have a "best" love townes and bobby dylan and Iris dement etc etc etc
that's Country to the core
That's like saying the Mona Lisa is quite good ... :)
WOW
Sad in so many ways....but honest.
haha hell yeah, steve earle actually says he'll stand on bob dylan's table in his COWBOY BOOTS and say that, it gives some aditional impact to the statement
And they both hated that quote.

Van Gogh reborn as a Songwriter!
Mookie cannot get over this!
My favorite artist in this genre by far is Bob Dylan, by far. Townes was fun but so sad.
lay my trouble on the railroad track ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, makes me drink from thishere jug
Lay my trouble on a railroad track ... babe I’m bound to go
Some souls are not meant to be long on this earth, they belong in the Heavenly Realms. Townes's was one of them....
Insane. I lived miles from murray.. just bizarre
I love Townes' music. Damn he aged for being such a handsome guy. His life is so similar to John Denver's. I guess you could call them spiritual soul mates. Did John and Townes know each other? They are about the same age and died at about the same age.
I do not know if John Denver and Townes knew each other…possibly could have…
He has such a polite Bob Ross - like demeanor
@Tanker XL That`s pretty harsh but I bet his son learned to never listen to or trust anyone and to never kill a living creature just because someone told you to without thinking about it first. js
@Dr T jeezus thats horrible Hope his son is doing ok
Love Townes but, man is tough watching him so out of it. Fierce demons.
Where's pt.1 man ??

He was a tortured soul for sure,, rip.
Does anyone know the album he is referring to with the Irish musicians on it?
No Deeper Blue
Is there not an audience here or are these listeners in shock?
John Holland It was a studio taped show that was aired on closed access TV back in the 90s.
What year? Sorry new here!
Blake Collins I think around early to mid 90s
@@towerscope why does title say part 2...
But desc. says part 1 of 2
Confusing
Anyone know where the J200 went? Steve Earle maybe?
His son
Anyone know what year this aired?
Mark Preston , I think about in the late 80s early 90s. It came off of the only copy of the show on a VHS...according to my sources.
sorry for the rudeness, i was getting drunk to townes and apparently making comments to, don't mean nothin!
Townes didnt have to worry about money - his family owned oil drilling rights in texas -
I've never seen his daughter on here.????
She isnt a musician
His heart attack was his suicide. The booze and heroine didn’t do it. Wish I could have seen him, I was just 5 years too young. He used to play at club hey hey in Houston 5 yrs before I started working at the Satellite just down the street
That's how a Pisces tells a funny story..sorta falls flat..great songwriter though..interesting
What Year is this?
Late 80’s or early 90’s-
I think…not sure…and my source for that video is not sure either.
Ok, thanks for uploading this was gold for a Songwriters intetest
Jeezus quite the story of how his friend killed himself
jesus, that was painful to watch. been there, done that self-destructive thing
I'm just glad he still had it in him to give this performance
Jeez couldnt help but cry Had to pause video couple of times
A sad end to a sad life...
Honestly found this too depressing to watch :/
sleepmuch ?
Never
I was innocent as a matter of fact....
Painful soul speaking thru his guitar. Simple as that. Dead at 52.
Oh it was a radio show
Yeah the usual 1994 radio show with cameras...
Huhhhhh?
When is this from? He seems like he's high .....
ChrisAndTommy GoodTimeFolkRockShow , it’s from the early to mid 90s I think. It was given to me by a friend that said there was only one copy of it in existence.
I love Townes, but no wonder this footage is "rare." Neither his guitar or his voice are often in tune. Even a master has a rough night.
Townes was never in tune. I find that's part of the charm. The truth can still be heard. Funny how the truth is always in tune.
You're a tool
Where are your tunes posted?
It's not always about being in tune, as in key.
The KEY is to be "In Tune" with your heart, your mind, your most vulnerable self.
Therin lies the Beauty of Townes VanZandt.
enjoyable, but man he had drinking issues.
He aged really quickly. I suppose the sauce will do that to you.....
Insulin shock treatments amigo
