I used to collect basketball cards as a kid in the 90s. Before the internet, there was hardly any news here in Germany about the NBA and I remember holding a Denver Nuggets Mahmoud Abdul-Rauf card in my hands. As a child of Turkish immigrants in Germany, I was amazed that there were Black Americans with muslim names like mine in the Be-like-Mike era (aside from Muhammad Ali). That basketball card was the reason why I started looking into the history of Black Americans (Especially their cultural emancipation from "White America") and still do to this day. I am so happy to see that this Man gets his flowers now. Such an inspirational Person!
Not a lot of people appreciated this man when he played because of different hypes and distractions going on at the time but I can say that I was one of many that saw through it. yeah, his pull up and release is probably the fastest of all time. Ive been watching college and pros since the 80's and I haven't seen any close to his speed.
Man you could tell everything is from the heart with this guy! Absolutely loved this interview, imagine a black man in the 90s doing a silent protest to then be turned into a national villain without being able to put out a statement like people do this day and age. Must have such a sore back for walking around with such heavy balls.
Alhamdulillah! I remember watching Hakeem & Kareem in the NBA as a fellow Muslim. Abdul-Rauf was another person I deeply respected and is so relatable. May Allah continue guide my brothers!
This was engaging. I don't really know of Mahmoud. First time I ever heard of him was actually in the Big 3, but I was curious. Appreciate your message and most, your punctuation PLAYA!
His story is POWERFUL
Yall gotta get Craig Hodges on now and showtime gotta do his doc. Seeing Mahmoud impacted my soul man. Good stuff Fellas
What a man, What an interview!
I can’t say enough about Mr Mohmoud Abdul-Rauf. I grew up watching and paying attention to him because of his strength off the court. He’s a hero to many and a leader of men. I’m glad he’s finally getting the proper respect and praise that he deserves.
I am so glad that this man is finally getting his story out I'm from Mississippi grew up loving Chris Jackson he was my favorite player LSU there was a TJ. Pugh Vernell Singleton Chris Jackson Stanley Roberts Shaquille O'Neal love them boys Georgetown was my other college that I love coming up but I've always wanted for him to get his story I'll tell everybody about this dude I'm so glad he's finally getting his story out
Mannn....you better preach!!! 💪🏾
Salute to Mahmoud !! Once I seen his name in the title I instantly clicked onto the video !! Several memories of em when I was a teen !!! Calvin Murphy touching the ball before he attempted to shoot the free throw !! To be able to control his disorder while playing !!! Not standing for the national anthem !!!! And changing his name to Mahmoud Abdul rauf !!!
I met this guy, such a kind soul. And very eager to inspire the kids, someone to look up to fr.
He had the sweetest jump shot. A real pleasure to watch it is truly not right what the NBA did blackballing him
It's so good to see him. Loved him as a player, even more as a person. He was way ahead of the curve.
Mahmoud Abdul-Rauf..........Thank you
Long overdue. Yall giving the people what they/we want. Appreciate yall for all the great content.
💯
Was looking out for this one for years! One of the best episodes yet.
Legendary and he stood for what he believed in
He stood for what is right 😏
This man is a true genius and extremely wise.
One of the best interviews ever. This spoke truth and taught yaw Islam at the same time. All the smoke is thus far best podcast . Stephen Jackson and Matt Barnes keep up the good work 👏🏿
This brotha is so beyond his years, it’s incredible. The wisdom, humility.
And that freshmen ppg record: 30.2?!
Tough.
respect to you Mr. Abdul-Rauf, you gave me a lot of life learning.
The stories of Craig Hodges should be next. Then Colin Kaepernick These stories should never be forgotten.
This interview by far is the best you guys have had on your show. What an incredible guy. I remember seeing him on the cover of Sports Illustrated back in the day. I had never seen him play and wondered why he deserved to be on the cover. I soon found out how good he was watching him one Saturday afternoon. Simply amazing! Sad what society and the NBA did to him in shortening his career.
This man has a magnetic presence about him! He has done already great things & he is will continue to do so! Brother Mahmoud love your warrior spirit 🙏
I remember him on Kobe Bryant NBA courtside on Nintendo 64! He didn’t miss anything!
Adam Silver needs to make this right! The NBA owes Mahmoud Abdul-Rauf and Craig Hodges a public apology! I'm glad this hero is shining publicly in 2023! #STAND #Alhamdullilah
Matt’s demeanor really speaks to weight of this conversation. This was amazing
Wow that is an incredible story. It's amazing what representation in sports can do for all of us.
Not a lot of people appreciated this man when he played because of different hypes and distractions going on at the time but I can say that I was one of many that saw through it. He is one of my favorites of all time. The media can have them jordans and lebrons. This man didnt stand and still stood.
This legend was so ahead of his time. Brilliant man and a true patriot. So inspiring. ATS continues to level up...amazing work.
I still have his basketball card with both names Chris Jackson & Mahmoud Abdul-Rauf. I always enjoyed watching him play :)
The quote my Beloved Brotha is trying to recite (I believe it is the quote)..."When a lion runs and looks back, it's not that he is afraid. Rather, he is trying to see the distance he has covered."
I met him over two decades ago on Market Street in SF and he was the nicest Brother.
I am so happy to have the opportunity to hear his story bless you! I saw this gentleman for the first time on TODAY earlier this week. Great story ! I look forward to watching STAND. All praises to the Most High Yah for your strength and courage!🙏🏾
"If you want to be great you have to practice it" This is one of the best interviews I have had the honor to watch. Mahmoud dropped 30 on Michael Jordan, that says it all about his talent. Grateful for all the wisdom he shared on the show!
I was so blessed to see this amazing man play at LSU... He had the fastest between the dribble pull up I've ever seen, even til this day.
yeah, his pull up and release is probably the fastest of all time.
Loved watching this guy play. He's even a more interesting person to hear speak. Glad y'all got him on there
Alhamdulillah! I remember watching Hakeem & Kareem in the NBA as a fellow Muslim. Abdul-Rauf was another person I deeply respected and is so relatable. May Allah continue guide my brothers!
I’ve always been a fan and Im 23, I’ve been waiting for my brother to get his flowers and people recognize who he was and what he represented.
This was engaging. I don't really know of Mahmoud. First time I ever heard of him was actually in the Big 3, but I was curious. I thought I was gonna have this on as background noise, but I ended up glued to the screen taking in all the words for every minute. Shoutout to everybody involved with this one!
Man this podcast is one of the best I've ever heard. The questions and conversations are so good. This show made me a fan of Dejounte after he was in witness protection down in San Antonio 😂
I was a big Murray fan before the interview just based on his game but now I have a lot more respect for him bc of how intellectual and well spoken he is
They need to get Chris Paul on because I feel like a lot of people think he’s an asshole but he’s probably all right. I hear he is very political in the league and more with the coaches/gms than the players, but then again he is the president of the NBAPA. His interview on JJ Reddicks pod was great and I think he would kill it on here and gain a lot more respect
@@JK-ry6pb he isn’t president no more but he is very political. He is the reason max contracts go till 200mill and the age limit for max went from 32 to 36-37.
This guy was a beast!
