  • This is a proof-of-concept video of a working 3d printed ENIGMA cypher machine replica.
The machine was built using a Creality CR6 max printer. All other parts used (like aluminum or brass rods) are readily available in any hardware store.
Wherever possible PCBs and standard electronic components were used in order to facilitate the design and make it more reliable. The rotor wiring is done entirely on the PCB, sa building a rotor is quite simple.
The machine and all of its design files are a gift for my wife (who teaches Computer Science and has a special interest in cryptology), so it will primarily be used in an educational setting.
This is also one of the reasons why the design files will not be made available.
As mentioned above, the purpose of this video is not (only) to show off, but to prove that it is possible to build a working low-cost ENIGMA replica. Also some of the design changes and approaches might be adopted by other people working on similar projects.

Great to see another of these and see it working! I haven't got mine working yet. It's close but there is too much friction on the pogo pins so I need to adjust some of the spacings. Mine is based on the Polish Enigma double. PCBs for the rotor pads is a much more sensible idea than what I did (flat head rivets wired to pogo pins).

The Rotor wiring PCB is great. Good job

One of my first c# projects was to simulate the enigma. Nice job, fantastic work!

I like the cleaver mechanism of the keys. I'm teaching about criptography (about 250 activities every year) and this machine could be a great tool for educational purposes. Although I am not at all handy when building this type of thing, I would be delighted to be able to acquire a machine like this for my classes.

Great to see someone else making a 3d printed Enigma replica. I'm fairly far along in mine, though I've got some electronics debugging to do. It doesn't produce the output I expect :(

This is one of the best 3d printed replicas so far a saw. Good jod! Do you plan to add a plug board?

No, no plans for the plugboard at the moment.. it would increase cost by a lot (all the connectors / sockets needed) and - at least to me - isn’t technically all that interesting. The goal was to keep the build as simple as possible. All the materials and components used are readily available in any hardware store / electronic parts distributor.

@@user-vi8kz6yl3j my plugboard cost is about 20 USD. Made from components available on the market. Only PCB design required.

What would it cost to order the 3D printed parts - just asking. Looks like a lot of material to feed the Creality CR6 max printer. How are the Rotor Rings wired?
This is really a fantastic accomplishment.

Shame the files not available to the public. I've learnt more at home than I ever did in "education"

    Wrong Lyrics here.
0:40 „Sometimes locking all those doors behind seemes best.
1:22 „Seven times the ashes may be hued“ (original lyrics: „Siebenmal wirst du die Asche sein“)
    2:47, 3:12, 4:03 as 1:22
