Yeah basically anything that's solely in the Simarillion and the Unfinished Takes can't be used, however things that are in those two but are also referenced in the 3 LOTR books, the appendices or the Hobbit can be used.

They don't have the rights to The Silmarillion -- only LOTR/Hobbit and appendices. So, for example, we might not ever hear Morgoth referred to as Melkor. Or anything about Ungoliant. The showrunners will have to thread that needle.
Other than her role in the trees she plays no other role really. So I doubt we’ll get any mention of her. She’s only mentioned in the books in relation to Shelob being a descendant of her offspring.
I don't think Amazon has the rights over Silmarillion, so they are limited by what they will show in the flashbacks, if any. That said, the showmakers did really well with the material available to them. Excellent episode overall! The suspense hook at the end was masterful.

@@GymQuirk You're mostly right. Sorry don't want to sound haughty or mean. Amazon has the rights to the appendices but have to follow with the already canon story line written by Tolkien. The estate has absolutely said that they cannot touch the events that happened in the Silmarillion, the Hobbit, LOTR or any of the full-on published works except for flashback purposes. The appendices are just a mass collection of notes from Tolkien and organized by his son to set the timeline between the books as well as a lot of major events. As always a great reaction from you guys! From what I have read, Amazon didn't pay for the story rights for the Silmarillion so they can't use Ungoliant and the main story of Morgoth (Melkor) from the Year of the Trees or the First Age...but I could be wrong.
I was thoroughly impressed with the beauty of this first episode and my argument to anyone complaining about there being too much set up would be that basically the entirely of Fellowship of the Ring was set up. This takes place in a different age and the people (mostly) and places that we are cumulative with don’t exist yet so even though I’m a huge fan, I found it incredibly helpful in organizing the places and people with the breakdown and set up that this episode gave us.

My favorite part of all the toxic gatekeeping is people mad about the black dwarves. The Dwarves were created by Aule, who was described as having "red brown skin" from stone. Their skin complexion is labeled as "unknown", only that they were less varied than the ones from men. If they truly wanted to be "Accurate" to the lore, then all dwarves should be black. Or are we to believe the red brown skinned "god" created white people from those dark stones? THAT would be very decidedly on the nose about the white superiority to have the "black god" create white people from dark rocks... (Aulë’s 7’ tall fana was stout and strong. His long, braided hair, black beard, and red-brown skin gave him the image of a large (7’ tall) Dwarf. Indeed, his children resembled their father) is literally the description of him in the "Lord of the Rings Compendium" that's authorized and states that does not conflict with canon. So where were all these people complaining about the black elf when the first movies came out and suddenly all the dwarves were white? Really shows exactly what they really mean that people ignore this, but focus on that.
Score great, actors great, plot great, visuals and audio great, pacing of the prologue and storylines great, just wonderful, I love it and I am totally into it. This show is definitely worth several rewatches. I also was suprised regarding the absence of the big spider, but agree with Hector that they may have saved that moment probably for a later episode/flash back, to not give away too much (and distract) in the prologue and from the beginning. It is overwhelming enough anyway.
The reason for the absence of more details about the origins/stuff happening in Valinor/war with Morgoth is that Amazon doesnt have the rights for the First Age. And yes it's stupid from the Tolkien estate to give rights the second age but not the first. So no we won't see more things from the past in the show.
I heard on Nerd of the Rings channel that Amazon is limited by rights restrictions to use story points from The Silmarillion, so omitting Ungoliant, the Valar, and Beleriand are have a lot to do with those rights restrictions.

Only the elves still preserve any records of that vanished time, and their traditions are concerned almost entirely with their own history, in which Men appear seldom and Hobbits are not mentioned at all. Yet it is clear that Hobbits had, in fact, lived quietly in Middle-Earth for many long years before other folk became even aware of them." - Fellowship of the Ring Prologue
Thanks guys - great, genuine reaction. Loved the first two episodes - what's exciting for me is it's a story set in Tolkien's world, but for the first time I don't already know where every branch of the story will be going. It's a return to a beloved, familiar setting, but it's also fresh and new!

Awesome first episode, I was hyped, and I'm continuing that hype! It's great to hear the commentary and explanations by Agustin for those of us that are not well versed in the LOTR lore and for the most part have only watched the movies (I did read the Hobbit a long time ago).
As somebody who doesn't know much apart from watching the Trilogy, I enjoyed it more than I thought. I think releasing it now is a good decision with shows like House of the Dragon getting a positive response and even Ms Marvel and She Hulk.
I liked the first 2 but LOVE Disney+ release setup about 1 chapter/episode per week instead of Netflix's binge thingy! The series is graphically AMAZING!
They didn’t show the spider scenes because they only have the rights to LOTR, Hobbit, and The Appendices; which means they only have access to stories from the 2nd and 3rd ages. Anything Silmarilion or 1st age is off limits
Love you guys, and love that there's a positive platform for media consumption out here right now. It's a tough time to just... enjoy things? and you three are all about that, which is awesome. Cheers Oh and about Elrond: he was born in Beleriand (in Middle-Earth) late in the 1st Age, and he had never been to Valinor. He was also half-elven, but chose the immortal life of the Elves. His brother, Elros, chose the mortal life of men and became the 1st king of Numenor!
My expectations were very low just because of the feel I got from the trailers. But wow was I surprised. On a technical level it was top notch. I was immediately invested in these new characters. Excellent television. Love you guys!
It was beautiful! Yes there's a lot of world building, there are going to be a lot of new viewers who know very little about Tolkien lore, so this did an admirable job of sifting through some often dry, scholarly material and breathing life into it!
To clarify some things Agustín said: 1) They don't have the rights to the Silmarillion, so they can't talk about Ungoliant. However, they could have talked about Feanor and the Silmarils, but they did omit it in the prologue to make it more concentrated in the main plot. 2) Tolkien never said Hobbits started existing in the Third Age. What he said is that the Dunedain met them in the Third Age and the Elves had no record of them. But even within the Legendarium it is speculated they may have been a branch of Men that existed mostly as long as they have. So this idea that "they don't exist" in this time period is complete bollocks.
Sadly we won’t see much or anything of the first age or the fall of the trees due to they only have the rights to the lord of the rings and the hobbit. So they cannot use anything from any other book, script or any journals of Tolkien.
John Carter for the world! Awesome movie! I'm also a pasty white dude and have always felt welcomed! 😉😆😁👍 Keep up the fantastic work guys you are my go to for reaction videos!💗

I don’t know what would qualify as a “true prequel” other than something written by Tolkien himself, but this is a prequel produced by people who have the rights to this property, so it’s legit.
Gentle reminder that Amazon does not have the rights to The Silmarillion and the First Age beyond what is mentioned in the Appendices A to F of Lord of the Rings. So We will not be getting Ungoliant, and much of the lore from the First Age, Valinor, Elf histories, etc. The focus will be on expanding the Second Age stories outlined in the appendices, and whatever references they make to the First Age.

0.1 seconds in and Auggie is OBVIOUSLY ready to go. Go off ya nerd prince. Edit: Okay but John Carter was awesome and I'm glad you enjoyed it! I really am excited to see where it goes after episode 2, I think it's gonna be a good time
hector be like: are they gonna f- what is going oOon
then referenced game of thrones like SAME LMAO HAHAHAHAHAH
Im so happy to see some more RUclipsrs just enjoy all the depiction and the lore ♥️ thanks for being positive
In the book, Elrond is half elf so no he has never been to their homeland, great reaction and thanks for sharing
In the show too, in the amazon extras about the characters is described as an half elf.
Awesome first episode, I was hyped, and I'm continuing that hype! It's great to hear the commentary and explanations by Agustin for those of us that are not well versed in the LOTR lore and for the most part have only watched the movies (I did read the Hobbit a long time ago).
Great beginning gentlemen!!!🙂
Your comments during this is helping me
With whats going on. Waiting for the next! Thanks for sharing! 😁
As somebody who doesn't know much apart from watching the Trilogy, I enjoyed it more than I thought. I think releasing it now is a good decision with shows like House of the Dragon getting a positive response and even Ms Marvel and She Hulk.
Yay!! I've been waiting all day to see y'alls reaction!
Back for a rewatch before season 2! I can't believe it's been two years, need a refresher lol
Just when you think this channel can't get closer to perfection... Hector goes and mentions Catan.
I feel like the point Gigalad was making about galadriel was her possibility of turning to the dark side that he felt, as we saw in Lord of the rings.
21:17 - It's unlikely we will get an expansion to that prologue, as Amazon doesn't have the rights to tell it.
I liked the first 2 but LOVE Disney+ release setup about 1 chapter/episode per week instead of Netflix's binge thingy! The series is graphically AMAZING!
Hector with those jokes to open the video
They didn’t show the spider scenes because they only have the rights to LOTR, Hobbit, and The Appendices; which means they only have access to stories from the 2nd and 3rd ages. Anything Silmarilion or 1st age is off limits
“You just geeked out about some moving trees bro” lmao same 😅 great reaction!! I really enjoyed the first two episodes and can’t wait for the rest!!!
That was literally me, every scene, I mean fucking hell I’m so stoked
Love you guys, and love that there's a positive platform for media consumption out here right now. It's a tough time to just... enjoy things? and you three are all about that, which is awesome. Cheers
Oh and about Elrond: he was born in Beleriand (in Middle-Earth) late in the 1st Age, and he had never been to Valinor. He was also half-elven, but chose the immortal life of the Elves. His brother, Elros, chose the mortal life of men and became the 1st king of Numenor!
Using winter break to catch up on this series, and obviously your reactions are my mandatory post-episodes watch!
My expectations were very low just because of the feel I got from the trailers. But wow was I surprised. On a technical level it was top notch. I was immediately invested in these new characters. Excellent television.
Love you guys!
Thanks for the recap - your reactions were all so similar to my own. Really enjoying this show so far and can't wait to see where the story takes us!
As an arachnophobe thank christ we didn't see a giant spider
It was beautiful! Yes there's a lot of world building, there are going to be a lot of new viewers who know very little about Tolkien lore, so this did an admirable job of sifting through some often dry, scholarly material and breathing life into it!
To clarify some things Agustín said:
1) They don't have the rights to the Silmarillion, so they can't talk about Ungoliant.
So this idea that "they don't exist" in this time period is complete bollocks.
i watched this Friday and I equally wanted to see your reaction! I can't wait for the next episodes!
YES, you have a lotr nerd there to explain things, that makes me so happy!
New sub, you guys are great!
Can’t believe how they made the Elves so ethereal and angelic. Peter Jackson take note.
I'm really liking this so far and I'm glad I can come here with others who are liking it so far.
The only FX shot I found poor was the final shot, while bobbing in the sea/ocean.
This is why I love you, guys:
Hector - MARVEL/DC expert.
Adam - STAR WARS master.
Agustín - LOTR lover.
My favourite 3 things!!!
Keep up the fantastic work guys you are my go to for reaction videos!💗
Pretty sure they don't have the rights to The Silmarillion - so they can't include Ungoliant.
loved this, hope you keep up with the show 👍
I enjoy coming in here to watch your reactions. You keep it welcoming and wholesome ❤️ Also I think the show looks great and we’re just warming up to it
Loved your reaction guys! Can't wait for the next one!
I loved the prologue so much. This series has set my expectations high.
I have read all of the books of the Lord of the Rings and the battles in the books in my minds eye were vivid. I have not seen all of the movies but bit and pieces, however recently I have seen some of the battle scenes and man they were incredible to watch. The scenes in these movies were almost what I have seen in my minds eye while reading these books. I am looking forward in seeing these shows with your perspective. thanks
Agustin- your new glasses look fantastic!!
Right. Elrond was born in middle earth
For me a decent work for little sourced material script. If you don't like the series , be sure you will love serie's soundtrack . Bear McCreary's compositions are fantastic and epic!
I'm a John Carter fan too! It's such a great throwback adventure movie!
I weep for the two sequels we never got. What a bummer.
So excited for this show from you guys
This show is so beautiful!! I loved they spent millions of dollars on each episode!
I love this series (so does my ride or die for LOTR sister). I’m so happy to watch your reactions. It is truly amazing quality.
Im the whitest person in scotland i love being part of the community guys!
I agree i like coming to this channel for a sense of positivity in reviews
I now know the difference between a ship and a stone!!!!
Headlines from other channels, viewers so negative, enjoyed your review, you guys are hilarious 😂 'one day the king will return....it'll take a minute'...'that's just me 😴 sleeping'...excited to watch this now 🌞🌞🌞
It was better than I thought it would be. It’s a shame they didn’t show Morgoth and Sauron, side by side.
visually STUNNING. don't feel a real connection yet to the story or any of the characters at this point in the first two episodes but curious to see what the rest of the season has to offer. I'm hopeful
I can understand that. I think most of these first 2 episodes have been setting up everything. We'll probably get more characterization in the next few episodes.
Thank you for being you! Hate the hate, excited for the excitement. Nothing’s perfect so why look for the imperfections? Let entertainment be entertaining.
I almost didn’t recognize young Ned Stark
🤣👍
19:41 "Jason Bourne, it's Jesus Christ"
Memes aside I really like the details you guys pointed out and can't wait to see what you think of the 2nd episode
There wore spiderwebs on the tree at the beginning
I wish this show was a true prequel to Tolkien’s trilogy, but I’ll take what I can get. Enjoying this series so far (more than I thought I was going to)
I don’t know what would qualify as a “true prequel” other than something written by Tolkien himself, but this is a prequel produced by people who have the rights to this property, so it’s legit.
@@hectorminator understandable. I think I had my hopes up a little too much when the trailers first came out but I’m definitely enjoying this so far!
