- In this video I show you what's included in this particular kit from APE. The stump puller kit is fast proving to be the best value, bang for buck engine kit for your Milwaukee8 powered Harley.
I touch on my opinion of the stock lifter cuffs VS S&S alloy option.
I walk you through my work environment, showing how I keep things neat, tidy & organised.
The M8 Harley engine is fast proving to be a solid platform to build huge power from.

Tommy, what an incredible passion and pride you have in your chosen field; it is no wonder you are so darn good at it and have earned the status you have. Congratulations on your videos; thoroughly enjoy watching them. Well done.
Thanks for the great feedback! I'm mearly attempting to showcase the work I do, the environment in which I work & try to share just how much I love my job. I always thought it was a cop out to say 'find a job you love & you'll never work a day in your life'. Well I'm extremely luckly that I'm living proof that it is true!
This is my upgrade when I hit 60,000 klm possibly and Tommy your the man that will be the mechanic doing it bud 👌👍
This is the very reason i brung my bike to you. Taking pride in your work.
Thanks!!! I really appreciate the support & the fact people appreciate I take pride & care in all my work 👌👊
I would gladly hand my bike to you for any work needed. I’m a clean freak and yes I always look at how a workshop is run and maintained. I’m a subscriber love your work. Ken
Thanks for the awesome feedback mate!
Good work place set up which you need given there's quite a lot of working parts to keep track of.
Gone are the days of the 90s workshop. It's 2021 and there is NO excuse for dirty workshops and work spaces.
Great work Tommy. Who doesn’t love a clean work station. Keep up the good work mate 👍🏼. I wish we had of done a dyno video of my bike 😉
Thanks Jason! I wish I could have got some footage in there for you too. I'm slowly acquiring some better audio & visual equipment to produce better quality content. Once I have the appropriate gear I will have some great dyno content. It's very loud & vibrates alot in the dyno room, I recored this video prior to getting a new go pro hero 8 with stability control so that should prove perfect for the dyno stuff.
Well said about pushrods Sir, some people like to set the 'preload' on the lifters to their own settings and the adjustable do allow that luxury. Another good thing about adjustable is that one you have each one set to how you want things, you can always remove the pushrods as if they are solids, measure each one and get a good engine builder to supply a real 'Perfect fit" pushrod instead of a 'generic' one.
100% !!
It's a must have when I'm running zero deck heights with heads that have had 40 to 50 thou machined off them. HD lifters have 200thou of travel so it makes sense to preload it to the middle of the stroke. Other lifters have different amounts of travel & being to able to accurately set the lifter preload every time perfectly helps me sleep 🤣🤣
@@MasterTechMiller My engine builder (I am in England) used Johnson HyLift lifters in my Twin cam and set them to 140 thou preload and it's fine. My engine is a 113 inches with reworked CVO top end on a Streetbob lower with welded crank and S&S640 gear drive cams and much more.......
i keep everthing nice and clean to good video
Its the only way to stay on top of things! Not only does it look great if & when the customers walk in for a look at their motorcycle & engine getting built, but I think it helps you stay positive, feel proud & actually feel better about working in your area with pride!
Great work mate very professional
Thanks mate👌
Hi greet video great work shop.can you recommend a cam for a 117 low rider st 2022 for a bit more toque a. And which will keep the bike reliable. I was told the standard cam is less aggressive for reliability.I am putting the screaming eagle inlet manifold and the screaming eagle air intake.taking the standard set up of so I can put a E.TBREATHER on. Any thoughts on what I can do to improve performance many thanks.
Hey Tommy, I'm in Perth and shopping around for a stage 2 kit for my 103 (I already have pipes & high flow air cleaner fitted). I'm looking at a S&S 583 cam kit, but really want a complete 'package' (ie, the cams, adjustable pushrods & covers, inner cam bearings, gaskets and of course new lifters). Where's a good place to get all that sort of stuff? I'm happy to order from QLD/NSW/VIC. Thanks in advance.
Hey mate! You can order directly from us at Darling Downs Harley-Davidson. We can organise all the shipping ect to get it to asap. If you want to email through your contact details and the best time to get in touch with on Monday (25th of Jan 21) or any other time, I can discuss a few options with you and go from there? walkintall.tmiller@gmail.com
Cheers mate 👌🍻
Will the new updated Harley oil pump stop the oil misting from the heads into the intake and air filter?
Tommy, just now seeing this video! Been watching for a bit and you do fantastic work. My question is, why did you use S&S parts except for the push rods and throttle body (screaming eagle). I have a 2021 Lowrider S.
The cylinder head flange nuts are not resuable as they are torque to yield. Once they are removed they need to be replaced.
We normally re-install new genuine H-D flange nuts during assembly, however this customer insisted on wanting the S&S ones.
Screamin Eagle finally have an option available that it almost identical to the S&S ones you see here in the video. They were not available at the time this video was made. If they were available I'm sure he would have chosen them over the S&S
Hey Tommy - what kind of bars and risers are on the bike in this video? Love your stuff man. Much appreiated by the Harley crowd.
I honestly can't remember mate, it's been that long since I've seen this bike again.
I'll do my best to find out tomorrow for you.
@@MasterTechMiller Appreciated.
Fantastic
What do you think of the Freedom Performance 2:1 2 step 4.5” exhaust in a stage III 122 Softail? Thanks
It works great 👍 👌
I’m about to fit cr483 and 128 APE kit. Can you advise what engine oil to use please
My 3 recommendations are 20W-50 Spectro, SYN3 20W-50 (Harley-Davidson)
Or even the Mineral based 20W-50 from Harley if you change it every 5000km it works just fine.
I do not have Instagram acc. Would please post the dyno chart for this build Thanks
Hey tommy, I’ve just bought a 22 street bob and had pretty much the same as you have just showed us here, yet to have it dyno tuned yet but what kind of numbers do you think I’m looking at? I’m running the bassani road rage 3 exhaust aswell, also I live in NSW, where do you recommend I take it for its dyno tune?
Where abouts on NSW are you?

Great video, I have 117 CVO ultra limited. I was looking at the 128 kit dose the cvo have standard head or a Screenin Eagle head.
What year model is your CVO Mike?
@@MasterTechMiller 2019.
@@mikeellis5714 so that's a 'twin cooled' cylinder head and therefore has it's own part number 16500499. The normal Ultra Limited has twin cooled heads too but the part number is different due to the 'granite' finish on the CVO heads.
In short, your cylinder heads are the same as the stock heads found on all other Milwaukee 8 engines regardless of being Twin Cooled or Oil cooled.
@@mikeellis5714 The Screamin Eagle CNC Ported heads are available as a performance upgrade through the Screamin Eagle catalog or with the purchase of the Stage IV 131ci kit
Been on 3 dealerships about getting my 2018fatboy 107 to 128 so far each one has given me more and less parts and all kinds of prices.
Would you help me getting a list of what parts do I really need to get the right performance on That 128ci thanks.
So there are a few options with the build. But the bare basics to get your 107ci Fatboy upto a 128ci would just be the cylinder & piston kit, you then need to add your camshaft of choice (depends on where you want the power), then you need to go upto the 55mm intale manifold from Screamin' Eagle coupled with larger injectors (5.5gps) & of course all associated seals & gaskets.
Those are the bare basics for a 128ci build.
Of course you can add upgraded cam plates, upgraded compensator ramps, CNC cylinder heads, bigger air filters, exhausts, etc etc etc.
Can you give me some more information about your bikes current setup (stg1, stg2 ?) What exhaust, air filter & tuning device do you have.
Finally how do you want the bike to perform? Low to mid range grunt, or mid to top end power?
Thanks.
hey tom on that build did you get the heads done
No mate, just kept them stock
What brand camshaft and what lift is it in this 128-inch build?
COMP CAMS (Mega8 234/240)
.472in lift
doing my 128 hey tommy what clutch setup do you use in your 128 builds
The stock clutch holds up perfectly fine, I only change the the springs out to 1275N springs from Screamin Eagle. Part number 37000286.
With all the drag racing and abuse we put them through the stock clutch pack & basket holds up great. Have had no issues yet when running the heavier springs.
I'm thinking about the 128 kit for my 18' father Bob. I'm using the s&s 475 cam. What oil pump do I need to buy to r s place my stock one?
Thanks
The softails have never really experienced the 'sumping' issues found on the tourers. If you can opt for the upgrade oil pump from Harley you'll be fine. It's an 8 Lobe Gerotor now instead of a 10.
@@MasterTechMiller thank you for your response. So would that be a screamin eagle oil pump??
@@harley203cam no mate, it's just a superseded oil pump from Harley. No Screamin Eagle Oil pump exists yet.
this kit if you buy it will it void H-D power train warranty
Long answer NO, short answer yes.
If I have a 2020 roadglide and want to do a big bore, do I need the upgraded oil pump? I have seen a lot of different opinions.
The 2020 bikes come with the new 8 lobe gerotor style oil pump. If your going to change the cam plate out to an aftermarket option like, 'Fueling' or 'S&S' then I'd just get the whole kit, plate & pump.
@@MasterTechMiller have you done any of the new 119/122 kits? What are your thoughts on doing those compared to similar sized aftermarket 114-117 kits? Does the Harley kit seem as robust? I know you said you weren’t a fan of the 128/131. I have a woods22-xe in my bike that I would plan to use with it.
@@ragingninja4292 not I haven't installed any of those as yet. I'm sure I will in the near future though. I can only hope the cylinders are better quality than the current SE cylinders ad they have been known to be out of round. That is thale main reason I prefer the Alpha Performance Engines kits.
That Cam is a good option for plenty of torque, so if that's what your after it will be perfect!
What power figures could you expect from this setup?
Cam choice dictates the expected output however our most common Camshaft the CR485 will produce 140hp & 145ft/lbs with a nice exhaust system on a 128ci build like this.
Check out some of my latest videos for more information on Camshafts & different builds
At what hp do you need to convert to chain drive
Our 143ci Road King was 202hp, running 9 sec passes consistently. They eventually swapped to a chain drive after they put the longer swing arm in but only due to belt not being long enough.
The belts are absolutely FINE to run 150hp and 150ft/lbs through while giving it a hard time on the track.
Some people will change over to chain drives mainly because they want to change the final gear ratio, and either do lots of wheelies & or burnouts.
Sorry for the long winded reply but in short, the belts will handle 150hp without a worry.
I've seen plenty of failures of those crappy plastic MoCo tappet cuffs in the US. I use only the S&S. You're foolish not to change them out while you're already in there. For the $55 one spends to buy them it eliminates the risk of the plastic coming apart in such a vital spot. Plastic in an engine just doesn't add up. I've never seen an S&S tappet cuff fail. Right on about the head bolts. Harley's suck and I've seen lots of failures there too. Good clean, attention to detail on your work station. I'm the same way. Always the like a surgical suite.
That's interesting that you've seen failures in the States. I have not personally seen one fail yet....what I have seen before, is the 3/8th bolt holding the plastic cuff in place, break when trying to undoing it. Seen that posted on FB pages alot.
I am interested as to what the setups were on the engines you've seen break the stock lifter cuffs. What Cam were they running? What lifters were they using? What Pushrods ? How many miles?
I build high performance engines on a daily basis and have never seen one fail. Even on engines that have destroyed lifters. I do recommend replacing the cuffs to S&S ones when going over 500 thou lift. I'm not trying to argue with you, just curious as why they would have failed is all.
Master Tech Miller I've seen it mostly on the HD stage builds. Most of the builds were not using a cam bigger than a 575 on the big twin and 468's on the M8's. Mostly stock builds with HD parts. Whenever I'd do a build I highly recommend the S&S tappet cuffs and quickie adjustable push rods. I also have high respect for the folks over at Zippers Performance. Their 468 cam matched with the HD Stage 3 build produces huge torque. Of course open headers and mufflers along with a PowerVision, TTS or ThunderMax tune brings out the full potential. I have an 18 Road Glide Special with Stage 3 build with Zippers Redshift 468 cam, Fueling lifters, S&S adjustable push rods and tappet cuffs, FuelMoto Jackpot 2-1-2 header with Vance & Hines Torquer 450 mufflers and I got 140.03tq and 123.78hp. Check out Moonshine Harley Davidson's RUclips page. They have lots of videos about the tappet cuffs and HD head bolts.
@@MasterTechMiller i've seen maybe 2 vids where lifter cuffs failed. One was 131 HD kit fitted by "Brad HD Wizard", where screemin eagle lifter roller bearing failed, lifter turned sideways and did lots of damage, least of which was a broken cuff. The others were similar.
@@ihateemael I point out in the video that in HIGH LIFT applications (over .480thou) that you would consider going to to the billet option. You said you've seen them fail and 1 of which was in a SE 131ci kit, that kit comes with a .517" lift cam and again, that comes under the bracket of what I said about using the billet cuffs. I'm assuming the other ones you've seen fail have had HIGH lift cams installed. Again backing up what I said in the video about going to the billet option when using a high lift cam. I stand by my opinion of not having to use them when a cam shaft under .480" lift is used. Yeah it's only $150 upgrade them so why not do it during ANY cam install? Customer preference I guess? I can advise them all I want but at the end of the day it's there money, there call.
In summary, using a high lift cam, use the billet lifter cuffs (like I said in the video). Using any other lower lift cam where upgraded valve aren't required then it's optional. That's my opinion anyways.
It's sad that you have to spend extra money on a Big bore kit or CVO to get over 100 horsepower that's ridiculous Indian victory all the big V-Twin manufacturers are putting out that type of horsepower stock that's what sucks about Harley it's All about the money with these clowns you spend $40,000 on a CVO with no electric windshield or no hydraulic suspension what a nightmare
People also buy $90,000 Land Cruiser utes then proceed to spend 40 to 50 thousand dollars on kitting it out with a full 12V battery system, canopy, awnings, suspension upgrades, clutch upgrades, re-tunes, lift kits, wheel & tyre packages.....
