The Most Dangerous City in Turkey? 🇹🇷

  • *DIYARBAKIR, TURKEY: The Kurdish-majority city of Diyarbakır in Eastern Turkey used to be one of the most dangerous parts of the country. Between 2016 and 2017, the Turkish military fought the PKK terrorist organization right in the center of Diyarbakır. Large parts of the Old City were destroyed during those clashes.
Due to the highly volatile situation, Western governments strongly discouraged their citizens from traveling to this region. Today the situation has calmed down and Diyarbakır is trying to become a tourist destination. And there are undoubtedly enough ancient sites for that. Join me as I explore the city’s 1000-year-old mosque, have tea in a jewelry store, check out the newly restored Armenian church, and meet the friendly locals.

Quick precision: when I said "the Kurds are originally from Iran," I meant that the first Kurds lived on the territory of modern-day Iran. Iran as a country obviously didn't exist at that point.

I really enjoyed watching this video. I lived in Diyarbakir for 10 years, 1978 until 1988. I walked all around this ancient city and have fond memories of Diyarbakir. It has changed and I would love to return and see this beautiful city once again. I bought some very beatuiful jewerly here and drank a lot of tea (cay). I really liked your video. Please return again and post more videos, especially inside the old city.

Thanks a lot! I am sure it was a very different place back then. Most larger cities in Eastern Turkey experienced a lot of economic growth in the 90s and 2000s, so they are way more developed now.
