You were spot on about the guys having learned through grinding. Once the proxy war between pro-russian separatists (very musch supported by Russia) and Ukraine in the eastern Donbass region started (where they lived) they had to choose whether to stay or go. They chose to go to the far west of the country (Lviv) and try and support themselves through performing. This was a long and hard road, they started out playing every venue they could playing for 20 people in little towns etc. barely being able to buy food. They grinded and grinded for 10 years until they first managed to get signed by Napalm Records on the basis of their video for " Sit, Stay Roll over" (which is one of their heaviest fastest songs) which gave them access to slightly better venues, they then re-recorded " Pisces" in a live session,basically to showcase their (then) new drummer Vlad, and as you well know that video went completely viral and opened a lot of doors for them, it became the stepping stone they needed to get truly widely seen and succesful (obviously also, because their music outside of " Pisces was damn good). throughout that time they toured nearly non-stop (think 260+ days of the year, pretty much every year) which is probably why the band is so tight live. They absolutely worked their collective arses off to get to where they are now and, imo are only getting better with each new album.
Behind every great over-night sensation is 10 years of struggle.

I was extremely lucky to get a ticket to their show in Kiev long after it was sold out. They are exceptional live. Absolutely mind blowing. You should thoroughly examine their tour schedule and go to concert. At any cost, literally. It's worth it.

I´ve been so lucky to see them play live 4 times and get to know them on a personal level as well. Every single time I´m blown away at their shows and they´re just wonderful amazing people. They´ve gone through a lot, breaking their way out of the war torn Donetsk in Ukraine and worked their assess off since 2009 to get where they are now. So they´re truly a family with a strong bond between them and you can truly tell 🖤

You're the 2nd reactor I've come across who can articulate my fascination with Jinjer. And to be truthful, Jinjer is the reason I even paid attention to RUclips reactors at all.
And their latest album has put some people off as it is harder, sweeter, and more chaotic than their older material.

Back in November I got to meet Jinjer before their Milwaukee concert. One of the most humble groups I've met. I told Tati that I hoped they continue to have the success they deserve after grinding for years. She appreciated that comment. Then I told Eugene that I used to be a bass player and he took issue with that asking me why I don't play anymore. He encouraged me to get back to playing and make time to do so. They are just as you see them live as in their live videos. They are always on point. That concert was a great concert and my first time seeing them live.
Why DID you stop playing bass? Now I'm upset with you! 😆🤘

This little band is a gem. You can feel that all four are music lovers. Maybe it is fun to check some older songs like Outlander, Scissors, Cloud Factory, Sit Stay and Roll Over so you can hear and see the perspective and development. How than also, thanks for the interesting reaction.

Another great reaction my friend. Funny how you mentioned how they brought the "energy" on stage even though they were not a headliner band and were playing in the morning. I saw an interview where Tati said that when they perform, they will always give it 110% no matter how many people are there. She said that they played in front of 10 people or less when they were just starting, and they gave it thier all because they were so appreciative of the people who came to see them. I'm going to suggest Pit of Consciousness live in Kiev/Kyiv as a future Jinjer reaction, that performance is epic, and Tati's growls are well, terrifying LOL 😄😄😄 but so amazing at the same time. You can tell they came from playing to small rooms. It's abundantly evident in the way they perform. Loved this video.
@@PrymalChaos The best tribute to the energy they can bring, for me, was the live social distancing concert they did last year for... Metalfest, I think? I dunno, one of those festivals.
It was truly bizarre seeing them perform to... nobody. Just cameras. Even more bizarre when they finished a song to the sound of literal crickets, rather than a roaring crowd.
I wouldn't say they brought 100% of the energy... you could definitely feel the absence of the feedback of energy from the band to the crowd and back to the band... but they brought 90% of it. Pretty close to 100% during the music, but the crowd interaction from Tati between songs was pretty cringey and awkward to be honest.
Still, that they could bring it as hard as they did in such a bizarre circumstance is a real testament to their professionalism. I've heard guys like Tank the Tech talk about that... about how the really great bands can bring just as much passion playing for 20 people, half of whom are at the bar wishing they'd shut up, as playing for 10,000 at a festival. I think it was on his reaction to Who Is Gonna Be The One, which he theorized was one of the biggest crowds they'd had to that point.
@@barefootalien That was Hellfest from Home, a totally streamed festival, and I agree they were still a powerhouse for an empty field.
The first time I saw them was a 400 capacity venue called Brick By Brick in San Diego. Then at a venue called El Corazon in Seattle that is bigger but still only 800 capacity. Someone on YT did a review of a show at a US venue on the east coast in 2019 that was 150 and they said there was a full-crowd wall of death.
So, if you see interviews with Jinjer. You would start to understand were they are coming from. The manager and willing to speak for the group is Eugene the bassist. He is the kind of guy that is like, I play the bass, I don't really need to learn to play Guitar. I like the bass. His bass is run through a guitar helix 6 on the guitar channel.
Roman their lead guitarist is somewhat shy and if you watch even the Russian interviews, he sort of just answers the questions somewhat flatly. But, if you ask him to play something, he can sit there playing on the guitar for a hour straight. Going over random stuff and innovating on the spot. During a concert he has a backing track playing the rhythm parts because, he doesn't have a 5th person playing the rhythm parts. He also runs through a helix 6.
As had been said Vlad is the trained musician. He is very good at adapting and adjusting to the band. It should be noted that the Vlad, Roman and Eugene write all the music portions of the songs, put everything together and hand the music to Tatiyana.
Tatiyana is an English major, who found she loved to sing at parties and for bands. She gets the music and writes lyrics to the songs after the fact. She is self taught.

I don't know if anyone has mentioned yet, but they are from a region in Ukraine that is known for coal mining. Both of Tatiana's parents worked for the coal mine, and Eugene's future was going to be the coal mines like it is for most of the young men in his home. So basically it was either make this music thing work or go to work for the coal mines.
If you notice their band symbol, it represents the tip of a drill bit used in coal mining. You should check out their lyrical video for the song "No Hoard of Value" which is about coal mining. Their background is very blue collar and little hope of escaping that. I guess if you're in that situation and you're hungry enough, you'll learn to play the bass and growl if that's what you need to do to escape

It seems much of the band's heritage is steeped in war torn tragedy. Maybe they are the Phoenix rising from the ashes.
They have certainly made a spectacular phoenix from those ashes.

Tatiana was excellent that day and demonstrated why she is one of the best front women in the business. The band also got to demonstrate their exceptional musicianship.

Just a minute into your comments, and I’m impressed! I’ve seen a hundred people comment on Jinjer performances, but you brought new perspectives, particularly with your angle that they’re a uni band who didn’t do the uni prog thing. Love it! I’m a fan.
Jinjer are the only band employing extreme vocals whose music I've spent actual money on (I'm ignoring my couple of Korn albums. Hopefully JD doesn't mind me denying his extremity!)
It's Jinjer's composition that grabbed my attention, initially *despite* the extreme vocals (you can tell from my username what my natural tendency goes to re. vocals!). It's *properly* grown-up material, with crazy angular brain-engaging proggy timings yet somehow without losing groove (witchcraft?!), lack of tired verse-chorus-verse-bridge/breakdown-chorus formula, liberal injections of slower very melodic chill passages, top-tier technicality from all 4 of them, & as you say in this vid yourself a refreshing lack of ego which sees them all pulling in the same direction to the betterment of each song.
Integrity is paramount to me in music tho, & for me Tatiana drips integrity- I 100% *believe* her when she's up there doing her thing. Also it helps that her pronunciation thru growled sections is always excellent, & her writing cleverly never tries to push too many syllables thru any growled measure.... this adds up to mean that (once your ear is accustomed) you can make out the majority of what she's saying without having to sigh & grab a lyrics sheet immediately like the majority of other growlers/screamers I've attempted to listen to.
Her cleans are great tho- she loves bluesy scoops up to & down from target notes, which for me gives a very human feel to the thing.... which in turn balances out the very cerebral, technical, music the lads compose. The fact that she has come up with the parts she has, when you consider she is handed a completed final demo of each song by the boys, & has to find ways of fitting into / sitting on top of big old complex slabs of strange meter heavyAF music (& those contrasting light & melodic passages).... I reckon she deserves more credit than she gets for her compositional skills too!

I try really hard to express what I'm feeling with some kind of elocution, but it's hard to do live and in real time, in the moment.
Especially when a band is as brutally impressive as these guys.

@@PrymalChaos You speak *quite* well, my friend. You're way better suited to this kind of Toob vid than many who have 6-figure sub counts. When you pause it's because you have something worthwhile to say.... I appreciate the effort with the momentary compressor thing for short sharp as-it's-happening comments rather than tending toward over-pausing & losing the flow of a song altogether.... you've already got a good feel of when to go for a commentary pause & when to keep the flow....
Basically you've got the job nailed, so I wish you luck with the tricky part which is monetising the subscriber base you'll build up pretty quick as long as you stay regular with uploads. If I come across anything I reckon would work for you, I'll ping you with it!
p.s. yes, I feel blessed to have witnessed Cornell live. Especially his acoustic solo shows (where he could actually hear himself instead of battling to get a decent in-ear mix over a 120dB ripping band!) - The smaller venues with good acoustics really let him play with that voice. Twas indeed a thing of #Transcendence, & he seemed to really appreciate an enthusiastic Glasgow crowd on those smaller solo shows. :)

Yes! The bass!! It’s so intricate, sometimes I turn the bass up so I can hear it more…every one of them is amazing. I saw them in November. I was front row and it was the best show of my life. This song was on the play list. One of my favorites.

I discovered Jinjer and the similar female-fronted metalcore band Spiritbox about 3-04 months ago and I've become slightly obsessed with both of them due to their fantastic songwriting and musicianship and the incredible vocals of Tatiana from Jinjer and Courtney from Spiritbox. I have picked up a lot along the way but it’s no comparison to putting in the effort in a meaningful way up front.

Perfectly observed and assessed. The level of skill and talent is at the highest level but enveloped in humility instead of priviliged, self-centred righteousness. Been a fan of this band as musicians as well as humans for over three years now and actively avoided the mass-reactions of sensationalism mainly brought on by Pisces, but so glad to find real insightful reactors like you. Yeah, I really agree with everything you said here, especially about where their magic lies.
I think another component of their magic, and perhaps some of the cause of the grit and determination that made them this incredible but without the usual ego and masturbatory over-playing, is where they're from. They're from Eastern Ukraine, and formed not long before Russia invaded. They had to flee their home city and work their way west, literally singing for their supper and playing for their lives. They got good because they had to, because this was their passion and also their means of survival. They serve the music because they have to play what people actually like to hear, not what they think is cool or showy. They literally lost their first (well, technically second, but first published) drummer along the way, to a broken back that left him basically paraplegic (I think he's regained a little function, but not tons).
Then a very competent metal session drummer named Dmitriy Kim joined. He's on most of their albums up through King of Everything, which includes Pisces and Perennial. The studio session of Pisces was recorded specifically to show off Vlad and what his style brought to the piece, which I think is pretty transformative compared to what's on the album. Dmitriy Kim is still involved as a producer and engineer, but Vlad is much, much more musical in his playing, owing to his music education. He's taking the band in a more progressive direction, which I like a lot!

I have a simple explanation that works for me...Jinjer IS, quite simply, a musically expressive organism, with four equally powerful limbs.
Actually Vlad is the one who joined the band most recently, previously he played in band called Zlam/Злам.

What show did you catch? I went to Frisco and Sacramento and as a long time fan I feel like they fell a bit flat. No energy, no crowd work, her and Eugene seemed to have a lot of tension on stage. She said they forced her to come out to do the encore.

For future Jinjer songs, rather than prescribe a path to follow down the rabbit hole, I like to kind of lay out some options depending on what you find interesting.
For more hardcore but with an interesting jazz twist, check out Who Is Gonna Be The One, Live at Atlas.
For more intricate composition and Djentiness, Teacher, Teacher (OMV) is great.
For a softer and more intimate side, and a _lot_ of jazz influence, Wallflower (OMV) is an amazing piece of art.
For a totally unique and mind-blowing _Reggae_ twist, Judgement (& Punishment) is incredible! Which version is a tough choice, though... The video is thought-provoking and kinda creepy, but Tatiana's One-Take performance is absolutely mind-blowing, and the song had matured a fair bit by then, and sounds incredible.
To see Dmitriy Kim playing with them, I Speak Astronomy is an epic video and quite cinematic, or Sit, Stay, Roll Over is probably their heaviest, thrashiest piece before Mediator.
I mean... like others have been saying, there isn't a single bad Jinjer song. Even their first published album, in which they had two guitarists and more of a punk rock vibe, is something I listen to regularly. I'm sure anything you pick will get you views and subs. ;)

I love how Eugene downplays himself as a musician. He feels that he isn’t that good and uses that as inspiration to grow and evolve. Too bad that there aren’t more musicians like him, not that there aren’t, but more of them.
Yeah, Eugene has become my favorite bassist by miles and miles. That he thinks he isn't that good is both a tragedy and also inspiring. I honestly can't tell if it's just humility, or if he really is that hard on himself.
I mean, can he play just crazy-fast acrobatic stuff like someone like Charles Berthoud or Davie504? No. But what he does play is _so_ much more emotionally invested and passionate that it ends up way more fun to listen to, even solo, for me.
People who are happy with their efforts never improve. Humility and (focused) self doubt is the secret fuel behind the most talented people.
Also realising that being inspired by someone better than you, rather than wasting time being jealous is also a key ingredient. I always find avenues for my own personal improvement in the work of people I deem to be further along in their artistic journey than I am.
Eugene honestly is one of my favorite bassists, his groove, creativity and substance is just so good, in fact one of the reasons I’m come back to this band. The whole band is talented and passionate.

Hell, I don't even react on youtube but if I'm checking something out naturally without any cameras or anything I still might pause it to take things in and process what just happened. All awhile prolonging how long it lasts aswell if I'm really liking what I'm checking out.

You need to check out some of the early stuff to see how far they’ve come. Waltz is a good one along with Scissors. Both of those are from when they were a five piece and getting their feet wet.
One of the thigs that really defines Jinjer to me is their orchestration. As you said, self taught, so they aren't trying to shine as individuals. But there is a great example of that in this song. When Tati is performing that long belt at the end of the calm interlude, the base harmonizes with her transitions, providing alternating harmony and dissonant chords. And it's such a beautiful sound. They do things like this a lot, but this is one of the more obvious ones.

Tatiana is just a beast. Had the pleasure of seeing them twice in smaller 1000 people venues. Charismatic Voice had an interview with her about being self taught by screaming into her pillow.
Vlad does like to slip in some bossa nova and some songs have reggae parts. He just gets so much sound out of a relatively small kit.

Love your breakdown of them as a band in this vid. Don't listen to anyone telling you that you stop too much. Bringing your knowledge to the situation is what makes your opinion unique. You have a sub from me... along with another Jinjer suggestion (since you talked Tati's vocals in the intro) - Judgment and Punishment one take vocal performance. She really flexes her chops in that one and seeing just her and a mic shows how truly talented she is with her instrument (not that we need any more proof of that).
I really want to do another one take. That may be perfect.
You should do a reaction to some of their bass/guitar/drum playthroughs. I am not a guitar or bass player, but can't stop watching these guys (and gal) do their thing. Amazing musicianship.

Super perceptive, thoughtful analysis. Loved your comparison to Music School grad bands that play sophisticated music like Jinger but the musicians tend to overplay and display their chops... to the detriment of the music. This band is an awesome example of elite musicians who avoid that trap. I'm an old R&B / fusion / funk junkie but now I guess I'm part metalhead because these guys kill me. Just bought tickets to see them live in Asheville North Carolina and can't frigging wait.

You definitely brought value and some of us prefer the pauses in between with actual thoughtful analysis and opinion. Reactors that just make faces and bob their heads throughout the whole song with a “that was great she has a great voice, please subscribe” with nothing to add is boring and pretty much pandering. You brought some interesting insights and perspectives, rock on dude. Also this band rocks, super talented. I had no idea they weren’t classically trained so yes that’s value knowing that.

Tati is an absolute beast of a frontperson. Obviously a very different genre and sound, but she reminds me of Robert Plant...the way she absolutely commands your attentions, and owns the stage. Her confidence is mesmerizing, and hypnotizing.
Drums in metal are jazz influenced. For example, blast-beats, chops, measures etc etc.

I agree about the ego thing. There's a lot of bands they get compared to where yeah I see the skill but I just don't really enjoy listening to their music because it just feels like they are trying too hard.
Jinjer is Tatiana's 8th band. Starting at 15 she basically started performing with any band that would let her pick up a mic, whatever the genre. Very notable is a latin band (yes, in Ukraine) name romanized Kodry that she performed with as a side project until they had to leave their homes due to the war (I think that was band #9) If I try to share links, my comments usually go to spam. But if you search "another tati jinjer singing reggae" you'll find a video of her singing a nice jazz song with them, and if you search "Vidcerts Jinjer Nirvana" you'll find Tati and that band doing 22 minutes of latin-infused Nirvana covers. ;)
I can see there is definitely some Latin/reggae soul in the way she composes melody and even moves. I hadn't realised that she sang melodically in other bands. That's good to know actually.
