  • In this tutorial, I show how to import a model with a different skeleton from the default mannequin, and retarget the animations so that they can be used to between both rigs.

    This is BY FAR, the best tutorial on how to do this that I've seen yet! Every other tutorial either tries to get you to buy a Blender addon, Reallusion's character creator, use mixamo's animations. I can't thank you enough. As someone who uses Maya, and Mixamo's skeleton, this has helped me far more than you'll ever know. Thank you! I subscribed btw!

    Wow, thanks heaps, this video allowed me to figure out a bone mapping problem I was having tring to re-target the ue4 maniquins animations onto a custom rig created in blender. Plus the translation options cleaned it up perfectly, cheers.

    When I try to retarget the other SK preview mesh appear bigger in scale. Any idea what's wrong? ALso when I equip a weapon my left wrist appear twisted.

    Him I’m creating a game and I created my own rig in ue4 because the mixamo one didn’t retarget right but when I retarget it the anims work but the model grows bigger and I can’t scale it down if you know anyway to fix that problem let me know and what 3d modeling software are you using that would be an easier fix lol

    thre are 4 finger bone ffs but only 3 in the mannequin

    i tried this when i switched my third person model to one from a low poly pack on the ue4 store but when i go to move the legs wont move and my character just glides across the ground. The only thing it does it keep the idle animation. Do you know how i could fix it?

    So I did this with my mixamo rigged and ended up having some issues with my character rotating all over the place when I try to control him. I'm assuming my root bone has some rotation that it's not supposed to?

      I resolved the issue by exporting to Maya, deleting the root bone and making it again. I think I must have done something wrong the first time. Hopefully this tidbit helps anyone else who runs into the same issue.

    hi im having big problems retargeting im trying to retarget and the pictures shows it looks good but when i retarget the model actually gets really smashes together and trying to figure out wahts wrong but it keeps failing any idea how u can help me? :) thank u

      It is under Modify Pose now, called Use CurrentPose.

    hi! i already commented long ago thanking you for this tutorial because i finally managed to make it look nice but i have a new problem now... I found a plug in for blender that allows me to make humanoid shapes and characters and i like it way more than make human so i decided to stick with it. Then i found out that it even used the same skeleton as Unreal engine, and way better, the same pose! So i thought this might not give any problems like at all, but WAS I WRONG. now all i can see are 2 levitating hands in the shape of a bird with all the other vertices inside of the fingernails, except for those of the nose, they stick out right in the middle… I mean, this must be something intentional, that fucking shape just cant be casually happening, i am sorry but that must be on purpose! I cant understand how with the same skeleton, the same pose and the same root is there even a single problem with retargeting...

      You have to pull it down with the root bone or merge all parts with your mesh.

    I know the video is from last year, but this was really well done, straight forward and simple to follow.
    I only used it to retarget the old third person skeleton to the SK_Mannequin, so didn't have to reselect all of the bones again.

    when i apply animations to my character the head goes down in legs ? help me

      Did you follow the steps for retargeting to see if it is still the problem afterward? If you have and aren't having better results, there are a few things that could be wrong that you might want to check for. One is that the head bone may not actually be attached to the other bones, or the hierarchy might be different. You can conceivably solve some of this by doing offsets and saving them to the characters base pose, but in general I'd expect it's related to the Skeleton retargeting. Let me know if you have any more information and I can try to offer another suggestion.

    Mine looks nothing like what you have, ive opened the FBX file and im looking for rigging, but its not an option

      I haven't gone back to this in a little while so things may have changed, but did you make sure to import it as a skeletal mesh instead of a static mesh? If not you may want to try reimporting. If you don't have the option to import as skeletal or it doesn't solve the problem, you may need to look at your FBX to see if it has the bone system. It's possible that something would have changed but usually those types of things are more likely culprits. Hope this helps!

    thank you so much, you are amazing, thank you! at first it looked like there was no possible way on earth to make the character's animation fit properly, i always got all bones in the same spot and it looked like a levitating torso, now, after following this tutorial i finally made a good looking animation, thank you again, and keep up with this great content!! :D

      i updated to 4.19 and it now looks different, how do i retarget it now? i cant find the save pose button... can you pls make a 4.19 version of this tutorial?

      If you're under the retargeting Manager, click "modify pose" then click "set pose"
