Never Say Never Again: The Reason Why This Unofficial Bond Movie Was Made.

- 'Never Say Never Again' is an unofficial Bond movie & remake of the 1965 film Thunderball. This is the story of the legal issues that resulted in this film being made.
Actually one of the best explanations of the complicated rights to "Thunderball/Never Say Never Again" that I've seen on RUclips.
Never say never again is not without its flaws, but its still one of my favorite Bond films. Sean Connery put the role back on like a comfortable sweater, and seemed to be enjoying himself. Originally he wanted more emphasis on Bond being older, and wanted to play the part without the toupee and with a beard.
I still love that film, I don't care if it isn't a "canon" Bond movie. I'm just more nostalgic about it than I ever will be towards Octopussy and A View to a Kill.
R.I.P. Sean Connery.
Octopussy and A View To A Kill are two one of my all time favorite movies. I have never had as much fun watching a movie as I did watching Octopussy.
JORDAN 250 To each their own there, when it comes to prime Bond I’ll take
From Russia With Love and
Goldfinger over the last two Moore Bonds anytime,
Plus Moore IMHO looked like he was about ready for a walker by the time of A View to a Kill, unlike Connery in
Never Say Never Again who could still hold his own as Bond.
@@JORDAN-ul9vs right there with ya! Octopussy is utterly ridiculous and a total blast! So many parallels to the Indiana Jones films as well. You can tell Bond was influencing Spielberg and Spielberg was influencing Bond at that point!
@@janterrirocks Sean Connery and Roger Moore are the best James Bond actors.
Why don’t people call SUPERMAN IV an “unofficial Superman movie”?
You want to know the most insane part of this?
Starting in the late 80s McClory and Sony started plans to make their own James Bond film series but they only had the legal right to use the James Bond character within Thunderball and they were not allowed to make any changes to the basic plot so their plan was to make a James Bond series where every film would be a remake of this one.
How many versions of Thunderball did they think we needed?
Klaus Maria Brandauer as Largo was pitch perfect. He outshined many of the "official" villains.
One of the best Bond films in my opinion
Sean Connery & Roger Moore both made 7 Bond films each (Never Say Never is still a "Bond" film even if it's not officially "canon")
Was so glad to hear that Sean Connery and Roger Moore actually became friends. Didn't care for Never say never again when it came out but its become one of my favorite bond films even though it feels a little like they are spoofing maybe just a bit.
This is a really good summary. Probably the best I've seen. Very succinct.
Even though the movie was meh as a whole I still think it has some great moments and one liners. Also it's Connery's best Bond performance since Thunderball.
And his final wink to the camera…. Priceless
I'm sure I heard years ago that David Hasselhoff was approached in the early 80s about playing Bond.
However due to the budget of never say never , David refused as he wouldn't drive a car unless it spoke to him.
That summer Bond fans had two movies to celebrate! How often does that happen? The movie may have its flaws. But what Bond film doesn't? I'm happy with all of them even the 1967 Casino Royale which in my mind is more of a celebration of Bond rather than a Bond film.
Q was a character created by the EON Productions. Now in the novels Bond gets gadgets from Q Branch but there is no single character named Q so McClory could legally have a character who fulfilled this plot function but he couldn't name that character Q.
I watched it a couple of nights ago. Like you said it's okay but without the Bond music it's just another movie, and Sean is really too old at this stage. Still, it was good to see him back!
I tried watching Never Say Never Again years ago, I turned it off after the motorcycle chase.
This is really informative and awesome. I am always curious about these behind the scenes stories. Great stuff man
The odd thing about this is.. There was to be yet another version pitched in the late '90s called Warhead 2000... Can anyone shed further light..??
Not much except that it was going to be another remake of Thunderball, the title and that they wanted Timothy Dalton to play Bond.
The funny thing was that Roger Moore was older than Sean Connery. When the official James Bond is older than a previous James Bond coming back into business.
You say it in the video. McClory was given the film & television rights by the court, which makes Never Say Never Again an OFFICIAL Bond movie. Just not EON produced or part of the EON canon.
I still say its the best Bond movie ever! ...... Connery originally had someone younger to play Bond but for some reason it wasn't working out. It was Connery's wife who convinced him to take the role. Sean tried playing Bond without wearing a wig but again this wasn't working out. To this day I would love to know who was the first choice for Bond in this movie.
Oh right! ...sorry. people claim Connery always was going to do the part but I was certain it came from him that originally they had someone younger in mind. ...thanks for your reply!
FOR ME...I WAS JUST GLAD TO SEE CONNERY BACK ONE LAST TIME AS BOND...AND NEVER SAY NEVER WAS THE VEHICLE....THE MOVIE DID NOT HAVE THE GUN BARRELL OPENING...NOR THE BOND MUSIC...PLUS OTHER FAMILIARITIES...AND FOR ME WAS BASICALLY A DUD...BUT TO SEE SEAN CONNERY....WELL...4 THAT IT WAS WORTH IT....❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Why are you shouting?
TO DRAGONFLY:IN REGARDS TO YOUR INQUIRY I ALWAYS INPUT IN ALL CAPS..EASIER ON MY FINGERS TO USE MY INDEX FINGER....I TRIED TO BE NOSTALGIC,KIND AND ERSTWHILE AND RELAY MY ADMIRATION FOR MR. CONNERY ALSO ENDING WITH HEART EMOJIS..WHICH I HOPED WOULD EXPRESS THE DEPTHS OF MY THOUGHTS.....SO I HOPE NOONE THOUGHT I WAS SHOUTING THEN OR NOW AS I REPLY TO YOU...🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰
Great clip! I already knew it all was about some kind of rights issues, but not exactly the way you explained. Thanks for bringing clarity!
I loved Never say Never, female baddie was great and copied for Goldeneye
Great video, very easy to follow and informative
I love “Never say Never again!” It’s the best!
I actually quite like NSNA. It's better than some of the official Bonds and well deserves to be part of the family.
Its a goddamn remake of the same movie
Agreed!
Never Say Never Again is the unofficial Bond film that Sean Connery as Bond make it an "Official James Bond film, Period.
Its a goddam remake so no
@@SuperWolsey I know that. So??? A remake that made $160millions vs $190millons of an original Bond film that same year. Not bad for a remake, huh??
@@SuperWolsey a remake yes, but still official.
I always thought that it was also because Connery had signed a contract to do one more bond film based on Thunderball and he reluctantly obliged (although he enjoyed doing it in any case)
Never Say Never Again -- an elaborate practical joke that got completely out of hand.
Still liked Connery better than Roger Moore who's version of Bond was sort of cartoonish in comparison.
The cartoonish Bond really started with Diamonds are forever.
I like Roger Moore better actually.
I’m a Connery and Craig man more than a Moore one, something about Moore’s hamming it up really grated on me after awhile.
The only Connery bond film I like. Only really like the 80s era of 007.
Why, apart from the fee would Connery play the same character in the same movie twice ?...
And I'm a 52 year old life long Bond fan who saw this in the cinema in 83
How is it unofficial if the producers have the rights to it on top of being involved in the original writing of it? I think you mean Non-Eon Bond produced.
that is what us bond fans call unofficial
@@kasrakhatir I guess the original novels by Fleming must be unofficial, since they weren't produced by Eon either to you fake fans.
@@iknoweverything4959 Since when are novels motion pictures with sound ?
@@kasrakhatir The logic is the same. You're implying since Eon didn't produce it, it means it's unofficial when Eon isn't even the source material, nor was it the first licensed on screen adaptation.
@@iknoweverything4959 No need to be dramatic. Eon is considered the "official" Bond film series because it had the film rights and made the most films. It would be like if another company got the rights to an Iron Man story and made it's own Iron Man film and RDJ returned to star in it. It would be an Iron Man film, but most superhero fans would probably consider it "unofficial" or "non-canon." And even though Iron Man started as a comic, it would be considered an unofficial FILM, because the people who have the rights to the character and the stories, Disney-Marvel, didn't make it. As for them not being the first, they are now the official home for the franchise, film-wise. It's why you don't see other companies making Bond films.
NSNA was such a missed opportunity . This film needed reshoots after they realized Connery looked good . I guess the last thing Connery wanted was reshoots
Love this movie
I figured it was the legal rights of thunderball was the reason this movie happened
I think Algernon was a literary reference to Flowers for Algernon. Btw, the movie kicked ass.
I liked it a lot....Connery was smooth a lot better than Octopussy...
How is it an „unofficial“ movie when Bond is clearly in it?
Connery is very good here, enjoys playing the role again, but looks too old and out from that era. Director Lewis Gilbert said that in his first two films, Moore still had the way Connery plays. Here, Connery has the way Moore plays.

FYI: _Never Say Never Again_ is the latter of two (count 'em, 2) unofficial James Bond films. The earlier film was _Casino Royale_ [1967], not to be confused with the 2006 Daniel Craig Bond film that really, actually was based upon Ian Fleming's novel, the only of Fleming's Bond novels to have never been made into a motion-picture until then.
_Casino Royale_ [1967] is a comedic spoof only very loosely based upon Fleming's book, perhaps more like Austin Powers than James Bond (haven't gotten 'round to seeing it myself yet). ruclips.net/video/BemV24WhM_0/видео.html
They were OFFICIAL, just not EON produced.
@@Dragonfly-0010 :
Nah, neither. _Never Say Never Again_ [1983]*, for one thing, didn't even have the official 007 logo in it or on the poster or anything, showing "007" stylized completely differently.

*A remake of _Thunderball_ [1965], and is itself a good outing for James Bond, totally despite being unofficial.
@@codeoptimizationware2803 Jesus Christ are you serious? 13 years old? In order for a movie to be adapted from a book the rights have to be bought. Kevin McClory OWNED the rights to Thunderball. Making his adaptation of it LEGAL and OFFICIAL. Same with Charles K Feldman who OWNED the rights to Casino Royale and who produced the 1967 film. I'm in the movie business, I know how these things work.
For the last time, they WERE official movies, just not produced by EON Productions. The 007 logo makes NO difference whatsoever.
@@Dragonfly-0010 : "I'm in the movie business [...] Jesus Christ are you serious? 13 years old?"
They let you freak out and over-react like that in the movie-business? ???
@@codeoptimizationware2803 Only to a clueless manchild on youtube.
Good one!
How can anyone watch it and not think it's a bond movie?
I watched this when I was a kid in the 90s with my father, I did not know it was a bond movie at that time until now.
None of the books are anything to do with the movies I've heard.
So they are all 'non-canon' ?
They should re-cut this with the rejected Phyllis Hyman song.
I. Never. Knew. Thanks because I can tell my friends
That guy was just mad & sued a lot Bc his name was ‘broccoli’. Also, funny Bryant ‘Spectre’ has come full circle & so prominent in the Craig films. Pumped for the new film to hit theaters.
I'm pumped too! Sucks it got delayed, but we've been waiting five years, what's another couple months right? Plus, unfortunately looks like everything else is getting delayed too. 😒
I like this movie.
...mate...it took 40 seconds before your critique/review actually started...you're lucky I stayed around that long...make your videos more to the point...right...I'll continue watching...stay tuned for another comment...
Why was there no gun barrel intro?
@selfie kroos:
Because the "gun barrel" intro: ruclips.net/video/rTyMkQLAREY/видео.html , like the stylized 007 logo, this one: images.app.goo.gl/A7j2dBvRJi4fRtkM6 , and the Monty Norman/John Barry James Bond theme: ruclips.net/video/ye8KvYKn9-0/видео.html are all official properties of Eon Productions, the production company that makes/has made all the official James Bond films, of which _Never Say Never Again_ [1983] is not one of those, do you get it yet, dumb behind everybody and everything else sockpuppet?
Never mind sean Connery never say never again
Octopussy was way better than never say never
00 HEAVEN
It’s so so so poor a movie. A rehash of Thunderball. One of them film they must have sat back and thought WTF when finished.
It's a pity that Connery was such a prick.
I never knew
Nice! Always happy to pass on movie knowledge. 😊
It's not unofficial, it's non-EON - learn the difference.
