The Rise of Mega Drive-Thrus

  • Fast-food drive-thrus are an American institution, with half of Americans going through one every week. Today, 75% of fast-food restaurants' sales come from the drive-thru, and the big chains know it. They’re adding more lanes to keep up with demand. In Brooklyn Park, Minnesota, a four-lane Taco Bell with a food elevator is serving customers at record speeds and is just one example of the “mega” drive-thru trend revolutionizing fast food. But how did we go from super-sized fries to super-sized drive-thrus? The Hustle’s Noelle Medina goes drive-thru hopping around Los Angeles to find out.

Also the summers before I could drive were awful because I was in a neighborhood 10 miles away from the neighborhood where all my friends were

      Oh yes, very common in Europe to have corner grocery stores and bakeries. Also, patisseries, those are another level than America's patisseries, and much more common. European cities tend to be real cities, while america is suburbia central with an often weak excuse for a downtown. Granted, you go to the Nordic countries (Sweden, Norway, etc), and it becomes more like America with spread out stores and takes about a mile to get to the closest grocery store.

    McDonald's having 2 lanes changed nothing since there's never more than one person taking orders at any given time. The one and only person is going to get the order on the lane next to you, then once done with it, will take your order.

    • @Homer-OJ-Simpson
      @Homer-OJ-Simpson 22 дня назад +6

      That’s actually not true. They sometimes do have more than one (sometimes not on site) but majority they only have one person taking orders, two lanes and two menus speed up the process as you don’t lose that time between when one person places the order and the next driver moves up, looks at the menu and considers what they are ordering, than places the order, then moves out of the spot to the pick window. That has to be at least 90 seconds per customer saved so if you are the 6th person to arrive in line, that saves you at least 4 minutes maybe 5-6 min.

The workers never get my order right, it's always cold and when you push the button for help, they have no idea what's going on. It's horrible. Chick-fil-A’s latest drive-thrus are state of the art. Two lanes, each manned by an employee, who takes your order on a tablet, and takes your payment. Then, your two lanes feed into one, with a second “spare” lane on the right side of your car. If your order is smaller than the car in front of you and your order is ready sooner, the employee stationed outside the drive-thru food delivery window will deliver it to your car, and you can exit using the spare lane, which speeds up the whole drive-thru. But how do they know who is who? They ask for your name when you place the order, and they also note the color and model of your car. And as much as I’m not a fan of mixing Christianity and business, Chick-fil-A’s employees are unfailingly polite, and usually smiling. McDonald’s and In-N-Out should take notice of this huge improvement in drive-thru operation.

It was a brilliant idea so they didn't have to have all the drunks (and homeless) walk in and mess up the dining room and bathroom. They removed the walk-up window many years ago for a reason that I simply can't understand.

  • @mcsomeone2681
    @mcsomeone2681 7 дней назад +7

    They don't do this because it's more efficient to drive through than walk in, they do it because it creates a disconnect between you and the customer service. If they make a mistake you are less likely to wait in line again compared to dining in, similarly once you are in a drive through line you are often "boxed in" by curbs and other cars so you can't change your mind if they are taking too long.

"Car Hop" service is what its called also. That is why we have the term drive through/thru, That indicated you pulled up and got food and hit the road again.
