Fountains of Wayne's rise to commercial success with their hit song "Stacy’s Mom" marked a turning point in their career, despite the band's mixed feelings about the track. The band was formed by Chris Collingwood and Adam Schlesinger, who met in college and later reunited in New York to pursue music together. Initially called The Wallflowers and then Pinwheel, they settled on the name Fountains of Wayne, inspired by a store in New Jersey.
Their self-titled debut album garnered moderate success, but it was their third album, "Welcome Interstate Managers," that catapulted them to fame with the infectious single "Stacy’s Mom." The song's inspiration came from Schlesinger's childhood friend who had a crush on his grandmother, blended with influences from bands like The Cars.
Despite the song's success, Collingwood had reservations about it being too much of a novelty hit. The band's subsequent albums didn't achieve the same level of commercial success, leading to a hiatus and eventual dissolution.
Schlesinger's talents extended beyond Fountains of Wayne; he wrote for films and worked with other bands. Tragically, he passed away in 2020 due to COVID-19 complications, leaving behind a legacy that transcends "Stacy’s Mom."
The band's members pursued various endeavors post-Fountains of Wayne, with Collingwood even working as an Uber driver at one point. Despite their disbandment, "Stacy’s Mom" remains a cultural touchstone, with its impact stretching beyond the band's other works.
While the song may define Fountains of Wayne in popular culture, Collingwood expressed a desire for Schlesinger to be remembered for his broader musical contributions, reflecting on the complexity of their relationship with their most famous track. - Видеоклипы
Correction Radiation Vibe peaked at number 14 on alt charts it was #71 on US radio songs chart. Also the band in That Thing You Do Was American.
And the band in "That Thing You Do!" aren't British. Just a little point.
you ever do a dive on Marcy Playground? I still love that poppies cd ✌️💚
That thing you do setting was based on erie pa
@@sitindogmas I did ages ago. Here it is. Honestly it's not as detailed as my more recent videos so I could probably update that video. ruclips.net/video/yW5RvTcYZfE/видео.html

Adam: "I want to make a song that everyone will remember"
**Finger curls on monkey's paw**
huh?
Stacy's Mom is a bop for sure, but what really impressed me is that the theme song for the movie 'That Thing You Do" movie from 1996 was written by Adam. The movie was not about a fictional 'british' band... they were clearly american, but they were obviously inspired by the British invasion of the era it took place in.
I agree, without that catchy song you gotta wonder if the movie would of hit the same.
@@eviehammond9509Nobody ever really talks about the movie much anymore... but the song is still a bop
I LOVE 'Radiation Vibe', and that whole album so much that I still listen to it regularly. I miss the '90s SO much....
*"SHE'S a BOPPER!!!"*
- Dude on MAURY -
@@MedalionDS9I feel like people like the song, but don’t like finding out it’s a song from a movie.
Their song Hackensack is such a great tune! One of my all time favourites
100% Such a good song
They had almost no bad songs! Beatle quality albums!
Gawrd...besides Stacy's Mom, did they ever write about anything else other than streets and places??? 🤔
This band deserves so much better. They are great. Utopia Parkway is a solid album. These guys should have been big!
It's so funny because I grew up literally a quarter-mile from the actual Utopia Pkwy in Flushing Queens NY.
RIP Adam Schlesinger. I saw FOW in '05 up in Boston, half of the crowd left after they did Stacy's Mom. That was literally their show stopper.
Lolol they stayed for Stacy's mom? Lol holy crap
@@rikevans3348 Haha, yes barely. FOW held them with the strength of Adam's songwriting.
That's why you make it the last song
I used to drive a lot of routes in New Jersey and NY and listened to them a lot back then. It makes more sense when you see where they come from.
I grew up near the actual highway store Fountains of Wayne
@@jmason61 yup. I drove past there a few times. Would always rock utopia parkway back then. Hey Julie, traffic and weather, fire island. Great songs
I-95 is one of the most beautiful songs I ever heard
Another coincidence! I was singing Stacy's Mom out of the blue for no reason and trying to remember the name of the supermodel that was in the video. Then I opened youtube and this video was in my subs feed.
I can read minds apparently…
coincidence you say...google is listening...
What stood out on the "Stacy's Mom" hit is that a 40-something year old Rachel Hunter looked in unbelievable shape in the music video. 😊
Yeah she used to be married to Rod Stewart
@@rnrtruestories she sure did.
Maybe you should do a video on Rod Stewart's career and love life someday.
@@kenterminateddq5311 story (sort of) on rod Stewart likely coming next week.
She was only about 33/34 when this video was released
Besides, it's only in America that we just let ourselves go at 30, women in their 30s and 40s are still smoking hot around the globe. (And the dudes aren't solely fatties or jacked gym bros)
I’m from northern New Jersey and I do remember that store in Wayne that inspired this band’s name. There was much talk of that there back in 2003 when “Stacy’s Mom” was all over the radio. Sadly, that store is no longer in physical existence, but is thankfully still very much alive via pop culture thanks to this band and “The Sopranos.”
I remember seeing the music video for the song Radiation Vibe on a channel called The Box. I brought it up as a potential cover for the band I was in but the guitarist said it sounded like Everclear and didn't want to do it.
That first album was solid and catchy (so were the other albums). I saw them open for The Lemonheads in '96 (I think) at The Troubadour. I chatted with them briefly after their set. Nice guys. I enjoyed Ivy, as well. RIP Adam...talented dude.
@@JR-es1sb Yeah, there was a tv show called Kingdom Hospital and Ivy did the theme song Worry About You. FoW's Red Dragon Tattoo was also featured during an important scene.
Adam had a massive talent for writing fun poppy music. He wrote the songs for Josie and the pussycats too.
A good mini-bio for sure, but I'm completely amazed that you didn't include one of Adam Schlesinger's greatest achievements (and last big one): producing the Monkees' "Good Times" album, which not only earned critical success as the best since the Monkees' heyday, but also their first top-20 album since 1968.
They must have had some connections in Hollywood. I remember the show Kingdom Hospital had Worry About You by Ivy as the theme song and featured FoW's Red Dragon Tattoo during an important scene.
I love Red Dragon Tattoo. Might be favorite song of theirs. The line about Korn always cracks me up.
True story:
Saw these guys in Nashville and I was excited to finally see them on the riverfest event. I sang along with all the oldies , but no one else knew the words. They kicked into Stacy's Mom and everyone knows the words.
I've never seen a singer more annoyed at a song response than that. I think they played it last and he actually dropped his Grestch guitar on the ground at his feet as he left stage.
Never seen a vocalist so defeated.
Cool story bro. 😆
Mexican Wine -- not a bad song. Thanks for turning me on.
Bowling for Wayne and Fountains of Soup. I almost thought they were the same band.
🤣🤣🤣
They played the same useless trash.
Zebrahead too.
I love when the music videos are literally visuals of the lyrics from the song. I prefer that over videos that don't seem to have much to do with the song itself.
I’ve been saying that FOW deserved better for years. “Stacey’s Mom” was the song that brought me to the dance, but I chose to take the deep dive into the rest of their catalogue ten years ago and never looked back. Unfortunately, a lot of casual music fans won’t take the time to do that kind of homework, so the one hit is all they’ll ever know. ,
What dance???
While Stacy's Mom brought me here, your comment inspired a deep dive into their catalog. Thank you!!❤
Their debut album was so great
Stacy's mom was a killer tune, anyone would be proud to have it. Great vid as always.
To be fair;
The 2000's particular 2000-2008,
Was a time when ALL music genres had 1-3 songs that were OVERPLAYED and OVERPLAYED and OVERPLAYED
Examples were shown in the video;
Nelly's hot in here
Godsmack's alive
Stacy's mom was no exception
Great point
That Thing You Do was definitely 💯 thur best work!!! I AM offended, however, that u know so little to even barely research that it was not about a "British Band". Lol.
*** The band was U.S.American, & from Eerie , Pennsylvania. *** [!!!]
Wow! Love your content. Thanks for this musical knowledge that I can add to my vast rows of headspace. 😅❤
You're so welcome!
They also did the Crank Yankers theme song which in my opinion is ome of the catchiest theme songs ever.
Adam also wrote "Way Back into Love" for the 2007 movie, "Music and Lyrics" with Hugh Grant.
Prom Theme deserves much more recognition it is such an amazing rock ballad
Why didn't you mention 'Sink to the Bottom', their most popular song from the first album? Radiation Vibe is really cool but as far as popularity went it didn't hold a candle to Sink to the Bottom.
I love your channel and the education of rock n roll that comes with it, keep up the great work and thank you brother
I appreciate that
@@rnrtruestories yes sir you are very welcome and have you ever heard of the rainmakers just curious if not check out big fat blonde by them it came out in 86 saw them live a few times my favorite was them opening for Kansas in Pittsburgh and I had a standing room only right in front of a big a?? speaker set up and loud does not define how it made my 17 year old ears ring for a week or better, wow
Probably the only time you'll hear a band complain about more ladies showing up to their gigs. Poor fellas.
Great video!!! I remember hearing "Radiation Vibe" for the first time. I was in my mid twenties.... And that song was just so catchy, that I couldn't help to like it. My bong-muddled brain of the 90's liked all kinds of music. Anyway, Stacy's Mom is probably my least favorite song by FOW.
I was sad when Adam passed away. It reminded me of my own mortality.
👃😎👃
When he died, suddenly at the start of the pandemic..I knew...holy crap..we are in for a wave of problems here. Way to young. So much more to offer.
You’re old af
I wish artists would be able to embrace their success more. Is Stacy's Mom a super serious pop ballad? Absolutely not, but it's not just some joke either. To me, Stacy's Mom is remembering a time when I was in high school, listening to music with my friends and being carefree. You don't always have to write the worlds greatest song to make an impact on someone's life. I love the song but not because it's a "joke". Perspective changes everything but I feel if some bands or artists would just embrace said music, they'd find a lot more peace in the long run.
Great band. Their first two albums are excellent.
Anyone ever hear the Tinted Windows record ? Schlesinger , Bun E Carlos from Cheap Trick , James Iha from Smashing Pumpkins, and Taylor Hanson ?? KILLER power pop
Yes! It rules! I’ve turned a lot of people onto it!
This band was actually good. I’d welcome them back compared to the crap we have today
Thank you for making this.
That song will keep them on the county fair circuit for years and years. It alone will keep them from having boring 9 to 5 jobs.
I read years ago that they also disliked That thing You Do. So that makes them the only band I know as 1.5 hit wonder.
Only one of the members of Fountains of Wayne wrote That Thing You Do.
Fountains of Wayne deserved so much more. Radiation Vibe has the greatest harmonies this side of the Beach Boys, and the band created fantastic pop songs with wit and hooks for days. Personally, I would say That Thing You Do makes Adam a 2 hit wonder, and I have always loved Sink to the Bottom. The songs are still amazing and easily found if you want to explore songwriting at its finest.
R.I.P. Adam L. Schlesinger 1967 - 2020
BFS version is fantastic. FOW is also a great band
Thanks for this video!! I'm gonna buy that album and grab my Beatles chord book.
thanks for a great video about a seriously underrated and underappreciated band. Also worth checking out is Adam's other band Ivy.
I got my outdoor Buddha at FOW decades ago would drive by all the time next to DMV cool content Bro
Thanks
I’m more concerned with what happened to Stacy’s Mom…
She hit the wall
She's now on a registry
@@Ideo7Zshe goes house to house...
She should’ve gone to jail lol
'Radiation Vibe' has to be my favorite song, and only song, that I like from them.
Great tune
Great video though. Rachel thingy looked amazing.
Hey could you do the Smithereens please?
I always find it fascinating when musicians hate their hit song, especially if you're writing pop music in the first place. In the video, it is specifically stated that by their third album they "evolved their sound to be more commercial pop..." and you achieved exactly what you set out to do, but then get upset that you're known for "that one song?" It's like a rapper going gangster, then gets upset that he is seen as a gangster. Baffling to me. What did you think would happen when you set out to be more commercial pop? You will be seen as a pop band... and if you have success, 99% of the time it will be a "one hit wonder type of thing." Did you not see this coming? I would find that hard to believe because everyone else did. When I first heard Stacy's Mom, I thought it was the quintessential one-hit wonder type of song.
Wait...his friend had a crush on his own grandmother? Or he had a crush on his friends (the songwriters) grandmother? I am confusion😕
I had a crush on Matt's mom when I was a kid.
Ivy is an incredible band too! James Iha of Smashing Pumpkins fame played on their later records.
I saw them open for smashing pumpkins in Rochester NY in the mid 90s
Tbh I truly believed that the movie "American Pie", ntm the newly coined term "MILF"(um American Pie), was the absolute true inspiration for this song. I mean look at the year it was released and the culture. Sure they'll lie. But that's where that song came from.
I always felt like stifflers mom played some part in it
WOW! I had no idea he wrote 'That Thing You Do'! That is a great song & I wanted the 45 for my jukebox but it was SO expensive!
I also thought they were brothers! I saw them in early Y2K and they were fighting on stage, plus they were playing in a dirty San Diego metal club, so not the best show, but nothing can make me not love them!
I never thought of Stacey's Mom as a novelty hit. I thought it was very much an example of the group's work. Their songs always had a bit of humor in it, the type of humor that is self-deprecating. How is it any more a novelty than Leave the Biker or Hat and Feet?
So they didn't write the Phineas and Ferb song? Oh yeah... that was Bowling for Soup.
😂😂they really sound the same
So many better songs by them. One of my all time favourite bands! I like that Chris mentioned ‘girl I can’t forget’ Love that ♥️ And agree that often the most successful songs aren’t the best ones.
2:43 Many people didn’t know that Elon Musk was also a part of the band
If anyone here hasn't picked up the albums by FOW, you need to. If you like Matthew Sweet, The Click Five, Jellyfish you will love this band! I think I 95 is a great song. I love the tongue in cheek humor of Mexican Wine
She had it going on.
Great video.what a sad story
I hated and still do that song, but all kinds of time is amazing.
...Maybe they shouldn't have written it?
That album is fantastic.
Love their stuff prior to this album...
Every band ever hates their hits. Those are the songs they have to play at every show.
As a lifelong fan it is always understandable yet irritating that if you bring up an artist/band you like the median reaction will be to their biggest single, which is often their most kitschy and non-representative, like Hanson's MMMBop, which is not one of their better outputs. While it's great for them that Stacy's Mom performed so well it's staggering the number of people that can name that tune and not One other from their amazing catalogue. Fountains of Wayne could Write and they could Play, bringing tears and joy to entire rooms but they're almost solely remembered for This? No flocking wonder people quit the industry.
Sink to the Bottom will always be my favorite FOW song, far better than Stacy’s Mom. RIP Adam.
I couldn't find any videos about Scandal or Patty Smyth, do you have any?
living and growing up in no where with no opportunity to speak of in any regard in a situation that prevented any chance at a normal life really makes me feel to complain about there success and money poor poor guys
What a great album.
The success of the song is largely from the hot music video of Stacy's Mom aka Rachel Hunter.
Bowling for soup ?
What did they do ?
1985
Not sure if it’s just your show, but there seems to be a lot of episodes of bands that complain about the song that made them popular and made them money. Most people go through life working a job they don’t like, not being a celebrity and preserving through the pain of his life.
BFS is actually underrated genius
The best FoW song is “Hey, Julie” off of Welcome Interstate Managers, which was their best album. Stacy’s Mom was also on that album, and is the worst song on it.
The FOW had a good thing going. Too bad they didn't realize it. Their songs had great lyrics, and an underlying sense of humor that appealed to the non knuclehead rock crowd. Stacy's Mom, fit perfectly on Welcome Interstate Managers. Many of the other great songs on that album would have never been heard without it.
Oh boo hoo. We had a big hit, but it ended up defining us, because we couldn't back it up with anything else. Just take the money and run, guys. Most good musicians don't even get that one break.
EXACTLY!
This band rules so hard, it's understandable that a hit not very representative of their style would piss them off.
I saw them live once and they played it at the end so nobody would leave.
It’s a little annoying to hear complaints about having a big hit everyone remembers. Gary Numan plays Cars all the time still.
From what i understand, the Grammy committee considers the year an artist makes a substantial impact in the music world their first year. For instance, Paula Cole won for best new artist with This Fire which was released in 1996 even though her album Harbinger was released 2 years earlier.
That seems to make sense
Shelby Lynne is a great example. Her first LP was releases a full decade before "I Am Shelby Lynne" (her SIXTH record) helped earn her the Best New Artist Award.

Adam wrote That Thing You Do with Mike Viola. You should give credit there.
IT'S THE MILF SONG!! 😂
P.S.: I had no idea the album they did before the one that had "Stacy's Mom" on it was called *Utopia Pkwy,* with one of the actual STREET SIGNS as the album cover. 😳 Given the fact that I was born and raised in Flushing Queens NY literally a quarter-mile from said Utopia Pkwy, that makes my inner boy go, SQUEEEE!!!! 😁
They hated her so much they wrote a song about her
Anytime I hear Stacey's Mom I sing.along, loudly. It's so damn catchy!
A friend that had a crush on his grandmother? His own grandmother?
I have seen some hot grannies🙂
Not everyone can be as deep and prolific as Led Zeppelin, the Beatles, the Stones, Pink Floyd …. The music world needs light, fun, goofy tunes that makes your girlfriend happy and is a crowd favorite at parties. Don’t overthink it..
True story! When I was in high school I had a girl friend that had a milf for a mother. Few years later I was in a bar in a holiday inn and bam Linda was in there with some friends and I told I was driving back to Lucedale by myself and I asked her if she wanted to ride with me to keep me awake. She did. I had a wreck and not only my new car, her life! I changed my name to double decker home and car wrecker
Your story started out like a Penthouse Letter to the Forum.
I have a hate hate relationship with this song.
My ex girlfriend has a cousin named Lacy and her mom left her husband to be with Lacy's brother's bestfriend. Unfortunately Lacy's mom was not hot at all, but we would sing this song and change Stacey to Lacy. Kinda funny but sad also. I'm not saying the dad deserved it put he was not a good guy...
I don't know how , but I've never heard this song .
Wait…They were the Wallflowers and SOLD the name to Jacob Dylan? I’m embarrassed I nvr knew that…Curious what the compensation was🤔
Fountains of Wayne made some great albums! Check them out!
Ivy was a really great band that no one remembers.
Is it better to be remember for a one-hit-wonder, or better to not be remembered at all?
Wait....which song on That Thing You Do is it? The title track?
