Firstly, don’t just call it “Bruce’s music”, as it was the work of Mike Smith, Scott Morgan and Julius Dorbos all together that made the Faulconer score, with Bruce himself only contributing to about 5% of the entire score. Secondly, it’s understandable why not everyone likes the score. Biggest thing being how it’s always playing and practically never takes a moment to breath by letting some silence through. But there’s also other things such as it not being everyone’s cup of tea, and how when you ignore the constant playing, there are just points where the music placement isn’t exactly the greatest. For me, the music by itself is great, but the overall scoring definitely needs some work.
Personally I think the soundtracks really helped emphasized some of the components of DBZ's storytelling when Funimation took over and had Falconer Productions score it. Like Sacha said there are some periods where the music doesn't really match up to the tone of the scenes, but overall I feel that this music gave a bit more emphasis to certain transformations, fights, etc. Even though I watched this show as a kid and heard the original Japanese dub with music, I still prefer this one. I think a lot of people love the music as I see so many trying to overdub DBS Super with Falconer Productions music. Perhaps it's nostalgia to them from the Toonami days.

It built more suspense and tension between scenes such as the transition from Burter being defeated and the situation becoming more serious for the Ginyu Force or from Vegeta's death to Goku angry towards Frieza

Despite its issues, this is way more memorable than the original Japanese. Not to diss the original but I can actually feel and imagine the scenes the composers wanted with the American soundtrack. It also captures the science fiction and action elements alongside the fantasy and mysticism incredibly well. The Japanese is so 1 dimensional to me that it captures only the Eastern mysticism. I love most Japanese soundtracks for anime but damn DBZ was bland to me. Sorry, weebs and contrarians.

Finally after months of searching, 18:19 to 19:04, this is the version I heard in practically both when Goku was losing against Cell and the Gohan SSJ2 when he was wrecking Cell and was told to kill him but he wanted to let him suffer. That one is hands down the best of the bunch everyone is saying 7:00 is good but imo 18mins to 19 mins is far superior.

I think the argument about music always comes around with Dragonball, it's an interesting one, I typically prefer subtitles, but not with Dragonball / Z at all. With anything it really comes down to what you grew up with. The more important aspect is the memories, and passion you had in your heart for things when you watched it for the first time, because they're foundational memories, and carry intense nostalgia. Dragonball (part 1) itself never got the treatment to the Faulconer, Smith, Morgan & Dorbos scoring at all, but it's never felt off to me, and I can't imagine hearing it without the Japanese OST now. Super likewise, there's some themes I've grown fond of. If anything can be said about this score, it's that there aren't enough times where there is silence, and there are some tracks such as what is playing at 10:40 here that are really not pleasant at all. At 14:10 that part often plays when someone is sneaking, in any episode, not sure why it's needed at all when silence is just fine. When you view this on the whole it's a bit of a mess really, very jarringly put together, there's a moment in Awakening where they cut from Gohan to Mr Satan where it's so unbelievably jarring musically & takes you out of the moment completely on it's own. The most out of place track usage ever was imperfect cells slow theme coming up for s split second with Gotenks, which clearly tells me that they had to fill 100% of the episode with ost, but couldn't figure out what fitted.
Yeah, that's the biggest flaw of the faulconer score, the need to always have music. And if I remember correctly they had to rush composing and placing the soundtrack. If there was a version where tracks were played at appropriate times, it would improve it I imagine. I never grew up with dbz but I still love this soundtrack.
