Pruning/Trimming Adeniums

  • My Adeniums were growing well but those were growing vertically. An Adenium looks best when it is short and stout. So I decided to prune the plants to induce branching and to keep the height short to train it to look more like a bonsai.

    HI RAY.
    1.HOW OFTEN DO TRIM YOUR ADENIUMS.EVERY YEAR?
    2.DO W NEED TO TRIM EVEN THE SMALL BRANCHES?
    3.NEW ADENIUM...GROWN FROM SEED ...WHEN MUST I TRIM IT FOR FIRST TIME.
    4.CAN I TRIM AND REPOT TOGETHER?
    THANKS

    • @RaysFlora
      @RaysFlora  6 лет назад +1

      Hi, Here are your answers.
      1. You can prune/trim multiple times in a year. It depends on how fast the plant regrows and what look you want the plant to get.
      2. You can prune the small branches. Again, you can prune/trim as per your wish. It all depends on what you want the plant to grow into
      3. A new adenium grown from seed can be pruned after 6 months. In fact, I have read about people who have clipped the top of the shoot a couple of weeks after germination so that the plant grows sideways. Frankly, I have not tried it out. After 6 months, the plant grows or reaches a height of a few inches. I think pruning at that time could also help spreading the girth of the plant.
      Hope this helps.

    The black discoloration is not from a disease. When you cut a branch the sap will interact with the steel in the knife blade, and turn black. And then the black sap will be transfered to the next cut.
    Nice and informative video nonetheless 👌🏼🙂

    • @RaysFlora
      @RaysFlora  4 года назад

      Thanks. Yes, the sap from the Adenium will react on the blade that cuts it. I prefer to use use-and-throw blades for this reason.

    Very informative video. I am enjoying my first Adenium. I have had it about 6 months. It is about 18 inches tall and gets new leaves almost everyday. It seems very top heavy and is starting to bend. I am nervous about pruning (I am in Arizona, USA) and in the hottest part of our summer 100 degrees+ everyday and some nights. I expect that we will have warm weather through October then nights down into to low 70's high 60's should I prune now or wait for March when it comes out of dormancy?

    • @RaysFlora
      @RaysFlora  7 лет назад +1

      I think you live in a very good place for rearing Adeniums. My suggestion is to prune the plants if you want it to grow more branches. The plant will set itself right, no matter what.
      The hot weather will allow the plant to grow fast. So if you prune, it should be fine. The plant will enter dormancy when the temperature drops, possibly around October.

      This seems strange. You should have seen new shoots appear within a week. This makes me wonder if the plant is healthy or not. Is the caudex hard? You can press it all over, especially around the soil level to find out. If it appears a little soft in places, then you need to revive it by taking it out of the soil and resting. There's another video of mine you can watch to find out how it needs to be done.

I want it to explode, have it under a ton of grow lights (plan to move outside but my tropicals are actually thriving) I want the truck fat with lots of ramification and flowers. • @RaysFlora
      @RaysFlora  3 года назад +1

      Hi Pratigya, The monsoon is not a good season to prune adeniums. The rains and the heavy overall moisture can cause fungus on these plants. Yours could be a fundus problem. Check the caudex and see if it seems a little soft to you. Is it getting direct rain or spray from the rain? If you notice softness in the plant body, I would recommend that you remove the plant from the soil and let it recover in a dark dry place in your house for a few days, maybe a week or so. After its resting period try repotting it again but make sure that the plant remains dry for 2 to 3 days after repotting.

    • @pratigyapanthi854
      @pratigyapanthi854 3 года назад

      @@RaysFlora No sir, its caudex is hard and I didn't keep my plant (adenium) under direct rainfall during rainy season and had kept it under shade where it got indirect sunlight for 3-4 hrs and also I used to water adenium once in a week that time. Now after pruning, I kept it in shade for 4 days then placed the plant under full sunlight as now the rainy season is over here. And today I noticed only one tip is soft and shrunk otherwise two tips out of three are hard and one has got its new branch too... does the soft one tip get fungus on it..?

    Do I need to put in the shade or cure the cuts with anti fungal or cinnamon powder? It’s January now and I live in the Caribbean where we have hurricanes from June to November. When is best time to prune?

    • @RaysFlora
      @RaysFlora  3 года назад

      Anti fungal powder is optional. Apply it on the cuts if you think there is a lot of moisture in the air and it would attract fungus easily. You can surely use cinnamon powder. It helps.
      The best time to prune is just before spring. Also, make sure that the weather is dry. I don't know about the Caribbean. If it rains a lot during this time of the year, you definitely need to keep the plants in a shade. Make sure that the plants are not exposed to any direct moisture until the green shoots appear.

      @RaysFlora  7 лет назад +6

      I got this question from others as well. OK, if you get sap on your fingers, you just need to wash your hand with water. Just bear in mind that the sap of adenium is poisonous but it only affects you if it gets under your skin into the bloodstream directly. It will not harm anyone if it is swallowed because the digestive juices in the stomach will nullify the toxins.
      Just keep in mind that if you are planning to prune your plant(s) then you should not have any cuts on your hands (don't work on adeniums after working on rose plants). Wear a pair of gloves just to be safe.

      Word of caution. Breakup the cowdung into as small globules and mix it well with soil. That way these globules will store water for the plants roots and it will be well spread through the soil. Also, it will be better to reduce the frequency of watering as the soil will hold moisture for quite a long period.

    You need to seal your cutting, if not they are prone to loose your plant due to infections.

      If the weather is not too wet and humid, the plant will do fine without any medication on the exposed sections.

    Can I cut now beginning of April?

      Although I would prefer pruning the plant during Feb, you surely can prune it in April. There is no harm, it's just that these plants tend to flower and grow from March onwards.
