Comparing Smallswords With Historic Originals

  • Today we take a look at two smallswords we've just completed for orders, one blued and one bright, and compare these to two original smallswords from the Oakeshott Institute collection. Smallswords are an early modern civil weapon from the 18th century. They were one of the last type of civilian sword in widespread use in Europe and the Americas. In fact, a small sword was in many ways an obligatory part of gentleman's fashion from around 1700 right through the American and French revolutions.
The small sword derived in many ways from the earlier rapier, retaining much of the form of these iconic swords, but in a much reduced size and weight, making them faster, more nimble, and much easier to carry about. These smallswords sacrificed reach and cutting ability when compared to rapiers, but the increased availability and reliability of firearms probably made this rather a moot point. Smallswords were for dueling, and they were ideal for brawling with their relatively short blades that could be drawn and used in confined spaces, from taverns to the interiors of carriages.

Smallsword was for dueling and "self defense " some colichmadre Smallswords made it on the battlefield. They even have much larger ones to handle blocking sabers and to be used as a spear point from horseback

"You can get your hilt gilded" sounds like a euphemism...
Very nice swords, I wish I could afford to order one right now.

What I really love is this last ornate smallsword. This is what a smallsword should look like! This is a dream. I wish you started to manufacture this weapon, but at the same time I am afraid to think about the possible price for it.

Small sword is like a 1911 commander. No real reason for it to exist but kind of cool it does

Ironic timing is just yesterday I was discussing transitional rapiers and small swords with someone and you statistics on one of your web pages for the weights of historic small swords.
    Rock On!

Well I personally don't feel that small swords are as versatile as most other I will give them credit where credit is due. They are extremely light & fast meaning they can often stab you repeatedly before you can avoid it. They are shorter than rapiers which can be a weakness against longer weapons but given what they were designed for, & most likely to face, it's not as big an issue as it likely would have been in earlier centuries.

The only way I've been able to get a real blue on fittings as opposed to black is heat-blueing. Is there any solution out there that will duplicate that colour?

There are ways to fight a man with a rifle and bayonet when you have a Smallsword. They were definitely used in warfare.
They even had training manuals for fighting the bayonet. Hint: Your Offhand is useful in grabbing a bayonet.
Though I'm sure the Smallsword was not designed with warfare in mind. But more of a civil capacity( urban sword)
Whats interesting is General Claude Antoine Hippolyte de Préval made a sword himself.
Its an 1882 steel four bar sabre hilt with a thicker triangular 36" Smallsword blade on it. Now thats cool.
