- It may have been announced on April Fools Day, but it's no joke - Liberty Media, owners of Formula 1, have paid €4.2 Billion to take over MotoGP, World Superbikes and MotoE from previous owners Dorna Sports. Given F1's boom since Liberty's 2016 ownership, will this be a good thing for MotoGP? Steph Wentworth chats with Oriol Puigdemont to find out all the details.

Liberty must know something we don't. CVC blocked from purchasing MotoGP due to EU monopoly rules owning both F1 and MotoGP at the same time in 2006. Those laws haven't changed. Liberty deal involves owning F1, MotoGP and World Superbikes all at the same time. I don't understand how this will be allowed to happen.
Rules don't apply to the American capitalists. They can do as they please.
Does Liberty have to abide by EU laws?
American capitalists do as they please. (Will Autosport delete my comment again...did I touch a nerve cause the yanks have now also bought out the Autosport/Motorpsort conglomerate?) Don't delete comments insulting their own presenters but do for those aimed at greedy yanks who have a history of ruining & throwing debt onto sports. Interesting.
Good old Autosport repeatedly deleting comments highlighting the free pass American capitalists get whilst not doing a thing about comments about their own presenters. Classic.
@@erikapple8955 They do when purchasing stakes in a European company.
RIP Moto GP. You had a good run. Thoughts & prayers to all the loyal old school fans.
What is the worst-case scenario that MotoGP could face as a result of this acquisition?
How ? while Liberty Media is not perfect i prefer their way of managing F1 compared to what Ecclestone have done. F1 is more accessible for the fans today than before.
@@jonpetter8921 There's a baalnce between the 2. Liberty have sucked soul out of F1 & the reasons why are a very long list. It's not hard for anyone to improve on Bernie Ecclestone who literally purposfulyl shunned social media or any innovations, the bar shouldn't be on the floor. Funny thing is many early DTS fans show joined in 2019/2020 feel the same way about Liberty & how they've shaped the sport. Obsessive focus on America & street tracks with a loss of the traditional circuits. Everything has to be for PR, a meme or cringe. That's before the pricing out of fans who have been for decades by the most insane ticket pricing system ever by promoters, over commercialisation of everything. All whilst cost of watching the sport has shifted more to PPV & behind subscriptions, especially in the UK.
@@d.b.cooper1 Like i said Liberty Media is not perfect but they have done better to make F1 relevant in 21 centuries making it more competitive and accessible, not elite sport. Unfortunately there are some old circuits that is not suited for the current cars making overtaking difficult thus predictive and boring races. Yes the US has 3 circuits but 2 of them offered great race:Austin and Las Vegas (at least so far) while you see circuits like the Spanish Grand Prix, Monaco where nothing happens in the race unless there is rain or anything similar.
But the new rule from 2026 to make the cars smaller is a great start maybe that will save circuits like Monaco. Old circuits that offer great race should remain, alternatively make rule change to make cars suited for older circuits.
@@jonpetter8921 Monaco and Vegas are crap tracks where Cota and Laguna are fine, Spa, Monza and Suzuka superfine. Where Turkey, Malaysia and China are the best of the Tilke (designer) tracks. Liberty is a money/opoly not interested in racing. Hope like hell they sell WSBk and get fined out of existence.
If MotoGP goes down the same American route as F1 then it’s fucked! This crowd seems hell bent on forgetting about the values of racing, they just want showbiz 😡😡😡👎🏻👎🏻👎🏻
100% correct. Drama first racing irrelevant.
Maybe look at this from another direction...... They might get ride of the silly aero and electronics. Then we could get BETTER racing

@@jonpetter8921 suppose it depends on if you follow it for racing or for a soap opera.
@@DremansworldI care about the race on track.
I can't see the regulators approving this Liberty owning F1 and MotoGP will be seen by the regulators as having unchecked power over track owners. Liberty to XXXX track ( say Zandvoort): "To get an F1 race, you also have to agree to a Moto GP race date, and by the way that means you pay us two sanctioning fees'."
Time for them to Americanise MotoGP just like they've done with F1
Let's hope they don't add extra 8 rounds of races 😢
Please don't ban grid girls.
Libarty media must stay away from the ruls and changes of the MotoGP/WorldSuperbike because then you will get the same as in Formula 1 that Redbull racinf remains dominant. That would be a shame for the spectators who have to pay so much for a ticket.
Ur blaming Liberty media for RedBulls dominance?
Liberty media bought F1 in 2017 r we blaming them for the mercedes era that started in 2014?? Are we blaming them for Ferraris dominance in the early 2000s? R we blaming them for Red Bulls dominance back in the early 2010s??
@@RobvanGooswilligen Your resonnements are off. Liberty Media is not the reason of Redbul dominance, it s just F1 nature.
This is kinda like being in high school and finding your favourite indie band has signed with a major label. However, this is bound to be much worse.
Liberty is a media company first and foremost, and are keen to turn the racers into soap opera stars or trained seals.
One of the great joys of MotoGP is not just the finest racers anywhere, but the presentation (tv coverage) is incredible - in Canada we’re able to watch the entire race day broadcast commercial-free.
Please Liberty, we don’t need another dog & pony show.
Liberty had to turn F1 in to a soap opera. The racing is shit and there is no competition, it needed something extra to get attention. Moto GP is different, it is actual sport and actual competition. That will sell itself, it just needs a wider reach and Liberty will help that.
And just like that, we have a monopoly 😀🔫
Glad to have grown up watching motogp with my father, it will be missed ❤
I thought this was an April fools when I first heard...
Me too! Can't take these guys seriously anymore
I wonder what Championship they will surrender or sell to get the approval of the European Competition Commission. I predict it will be World Superbikes & MotoE. That way the 2 Championship will finally get the chance to do what they want without DoRNA's guidance like before. Just to make it right.
The liberty media is a mixed bag but they have brought more exposure to f1 and hoping for same for motogp. Expect a drive to survive Netflix series for motogp.
Also someone had mentioned about f1 intentions to hold motogp event during the formula one weekend to spice up the event and I now see it happening eventually, especially at the circuit of America race track.
Im caustiously optimistic about this one. Like MotoGP way more than F1 and I do believe Liberty can maximise the potential of the sport
Wtf this is crazy
Looking forward to see the fruits of this operation. As former F2 Race engineer and motorbike enthusiast, we must admit that MotoGP lags behind in many respects, first thing first: safety. Then bikers fairness, commentatory level, technical analysis, technical insights. MotoGP is going to benefit indeed.
Agree
As long as liberty media does put Michael masi in charge of motoGP it should be fine
Don't ruin it.
This great
This is a sad day for MotoGp, 😞
⚰⚰⚰⚰⚰⚰⚰⚰
Makes no financial sense.
Such a shame. Turned F1 into more of a cheap soap opera and to hell with actual racing. Going to ruin moto gp

Finally we can have hybrid races.
Say goodbye to grid girls.
I don't know. Like or dislike this, Liberty Media is superpower now! 💪 Hopefully they are not ruining MotoGP™ too much. For me, just wait and see.....

I don't think more races will be added, that would shorten testing and of course development and costs would go up too high to maintain a wide range of teams... But I do think they will try and get other locations to expand the races to. I don't know if any of this will be good because they will make this more of a spectacular rather than the true essence of the sport.
The worst day to do it
Not a Liberty Media fan but i wish they would buy Indycar. Roger's team are the wrong guys to try and move sport forward for new fans or innovation. LM contacted RP 3 times recently and he's a stubborn rich old man won't entertain offer. MotoGP has better on track action vs F1 so be curious what LM does to bring in new fans.
So..... They gunna ruin this an all
Noooooooooo
RIP MOTO GP!
Liberty is gonna ruin moto gp now 😂 wrc watch out your next 😢
liberty plz stay away from ama supercross
RIP here we go at monopolizing motorsport...or because in europe moto gp is much more fun to newbies maybe theyll dump f1
Great, now they are going to ruin a whole new category. 😢
Liberty Media is a cancer for Moto GP!!!👎
So moto go are fonna have a load of street rracka inthe usa then?
Do you know how to read?
as long as netflix stays away im fine😂 as an american man you euro guys sure do make a sick sport that u guys seem to not want to own😂
Oh you know the netflix series is definitely coming 😂
Great they can ruin my other favourite sport!
There has already been the question posted on MotoGP twitter asking who people would like to see wave the chequered flag.
So I won't be at all surprised if it turns into another cringefest crap show full of "celebrities" who couldn't give a toss about the sport, they're just there to be seen.
I have never watched MotoGP but I’m excited for this
Americans will eat this like fine bbq steak. Get your Liberty stock today boys ;-)
Aprils fools? Anyways, if MotoGp becomes woke with pride flags etc, I will simply stop watching and paying for it. And thousands will do the same.
You have no idea what woke means, you seem confused 😁
@@andredeketeleastutecomplex you sound dumb and poor. I know what woke does to a brand - bankruptcy.
@@andredeketeleastutecomplexactually I think you’re confused.. what he said makes total sense. He’s saying that they’re going to start forcing LGBTQ flags in our face. Google the meaning of woke before you critique someone else..
Your such snowflake if seeing a flag triggers you. When have you seen a pride flag in formula 1, I swear you guys look for shit to be mad about.
What the hell does this have to do with anything? What about the bigger problem of LM turning MotoGP into a soap opera drama fest?
I love MotoGP but not F1❤
Totally agree. F1 is just a traveling circus, it's not a real sport. Moto GP is real competition and sport.
DEI hire
As a person without much knowledge about motorsport, why are many MotoGP fans so bothered by this acquisition?
Could someone explain the reason?
They are weak spineless cowards who can’t handle Change
