One way of knowing acidic strength of organic compounds is to compare the inductive effects. A compound with a higher -I effect will have a higher acidity. A compound with a higher +I effect will be a weaker acid.
@@linsdesk7240 I haven’t found any videos on how to compare acidic strength when pka or ka values aren’t given. but my suggestion would be, Try to learn inductive effect and resonance effect, so by that we can compare acidic and basic strength by seeing the substituents attached to the given compound. And also try to memorise some common acids pka values like sulphonic acid, picric acid, carboxylic acid etc. If you have found any videos then drop the link of the video here if possible.
When we look at the formula: pKa=-logka, they look to be directly proportional to each other. How come the acid strength is increasing with a lower pka value and a higher ka value. Could someone please explain?
pKa is negative log(base 10) of Ka : pKa=-log10(Ka) when you multply both sides of eqation with -1 you have: -pKa=log10(Ka) => Ka=10^-pKa, so if you have greater value of pKa that means you power base of log ,which is 10, to greater negative value of pKa in orddr to get Ka value. So 10 powerd on greater negative value of pKa is actually smaller number and in fact acid is less stronger
