  • Gdańsk is a city on the Baltic coast of northern Poland. It is Poland's principal seaport and the country's fourth-largest metropolitan area.
The city has a complex history, having had periods of Polish, German and self rule. From 1920 to 1939, Gdańsk lay in the disputed so-called Polish Corridor; its ambiguous political status created tensions that culminated in the German invasion of Poland and the first clash of the Second World War at nearby Westerplatte.
Gdańsk is home to the University of Gdańsk, Gdańsk University of Technology, the National Museum, the Gdańsk Shakespeare Theatre, the Museum of the Second World War, the Polish Baltic Philharmonic, the Polish Space Agency and the European Solidarity Centre. Among Gdańsk's most notable historical landmarks are the Town Hall, the Green Gate, Artus Court, Neptune's Fountain, and St. Mary's Church, one of the largest brick churches in the world. Gdańsk is among the most visited cities in Poland.

History of Gdańsk -> The entire Gdańsk region belonged to the Kingdom of Poland in the 11th century and later - for more than two hundred years - was ruled by the dukes of Pomerania, who at the end of the 13th century ceded their domains to the rulers of Poland, Przemysł II and eventually Władysław Łokietek. In 1308, Gdańsk was occupied by the Teutonic Knights, who ruled until 1456, when Royal Prussia, and with it Gdańsk, found itself - for more than three centuries - within the borders of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. Lost to Prussia in 1793 (partition of Poland by Germany, Russia and Austria), Gdansk was intermittently lost to Poland until 1945, when - by decision of the Great Powers at the Potsdam Conference - it was once again granted to Poland.
Out of over 1,000 years of existence, 146 years belonged to the Teutonic Knights, 126 to Prussia and the German Reich, and 26 years were formally a "Free City". Together this adds up to 298 years. For the remaining 700 years it was a Polish city or closely linked to Poland.

To think that most of this city was leveled in WWII...and it has been so lovingly restored - what Ingenuity, Focus, and Pride! My only Caveat: It looks too Pristine, and Shiny, as though it just came out of the box! Perhaps...if the World doesn't implode, Time will grace her with the Patina of Age, and Adoration.

Germans destroyed 95% of Gdańsk. You really think, that after that you can even say something?
