  • Why I bought BOSS KATANA and why I’m returning it!? Check the comparison out and share your thoughts. I did not go to a programming stage on Katana because I'm a firm believer that if the amp does not sound good the way it is (without enhancements/embellishments) then I do not want to spend time trying to save the day.
    Out of the box VT40+ was not just 2 times better, it was more like 10 times better, so it's not worth the hustle to deal with Katana. Additional pedals and accessories (not included footswitch, expression pedal or two, laptop and software) will make Katana 2 times more expensive than it actually is on paper. I'd rather buy a good tube combo instead (something like Marchal Origin or Fender Hot Rod Deluxe, and btw I just ordered Hot Rod for myself and the sound is a killer). Paid only $180 more compared to Katana with extra pedal and footswitch). Pedal for Hot Rod is included in the price btw.

    My only regret with my Katana is that I didn't get one with an effects loop. Mine sounds great, but that's not hard because it was replacing a 30 year old MG-10. 🤣 I couldn't care less about all the on board effects and whiz-bang downloadable stuff. I just wanted a pedal platform for $250 or less.

    i tried a katana last year in a shop and didnt know what the fuss was about, i was looking for a new amp to play at home with after my roland cube 60 stopped working, i ended up going for a fender mustang lt50, which is a pretty under rated amp because people are lazy try the presets and are like meh, if you take the time to build your patches from the ground up, you can get in the ball park of just about anything, the vox sounds way better in your video, thanks for posting

    While I agree that the Vox VT40 is technically superior and actually has a real tube in the preamp that reacts and responds like a real tube amp, (I own a VT40X based upon Henning Pauly's review) the Vox app is basically abandonware and there is no use community uploading patches.
    Whereas Boss updates its effects on the app and there is a very healthy user community uploading patches all the time.
    You want to sound like "insert new hot player here on song X" - someone will have a patch up that sounds pretty close.
    While you can get great results programming it yourself - the learning curve is higher and harder than just downloading something.
    If Vox pulled their finger out and supported this amp - they could really put a dent in Katana sales on the "real valve" bit alone.
    It seems to have more potential.
    I don't think that Boss is paying for reviews so much as Vox dropping the ball on their own marketing - focusing too much on their classic amps like the AC15 etc.

      I agree, however, many guitarists are old school (like me) and they will not want to go search for other people presets and configurations, and patches, etc... Most people just want a combo that works good out of the box and does not need laptop to change the volume of the sound in the memory. But yeah, for computer geeks it works I guess..

    • @frankiechan9651
      @frankiechan9651 10 месяцев назад +1

      @@infotek247 I don't think it's just for geeks though. If someone puts up a patch I can try and understand how/why they got the sound.
      Say why they lowered the gain on the OD but put up the volume or why they chose one OD over another in the patch. Or the order of the pedals etc.
      Which then informs me as I work on my own patches - giving me an idea of what may work for a situation - rather than flailing around in the dark.

    Why did you have phaser and delay turned on in the vox amp?

    • @GuitarGuru-AndyPaul
      @GuitarGuru-AndyPaul  10 месяцев назад +1

      these sounds were pre recorded, that's what i use in home practicing at the moment, but delay or phaser would not change the fact that Katana is not giving warm and nice sound from its amp simulators. The problem with Katana it sounds cheap and digital no matter what effects I add or remove, the source sound, tube simulation, brilliance, etc.., and VOX gives me initial sound that is much better with or without delay/other effects.
      I wanted to like Katan, don't get me wrong, but these guys from internet overdid it, they created expectations that are not really supported with the actual sound of this amp.. If they said it's a good practice amp that'd be fine, but they were praising it like it's something that you can use at pro music gigs and studio recordings, and it's just not true (I'm on pro music stage for 30 years)

      @@GuitarGuru-AndyPaulI feel it would be a more accurate comparison of you used the same settings.
      The Boss sounded warmer and less processed to me in your video, on all settings.
      The acoustic setting is supposed to be close to a bare signal, for amplifying the sound of an acoustic, should have played the boss on the clean setting to compare to the voxes amp sim.
      I have owned a vt20, great amp, less noise for sure, I sold it years ago for yo buy Laney Cub. I have a katana 50 mk 1 and prefer it overall, for what I play vs the vox. I wish the footswitch was not so expensive, but it works with other boss footswitches, which you can find used cheap, but annoyingly run on 9v power.

    • @GuitarGuru-AndyPaul
      @GuitarGuru-AndyPaul  10 месяцев назад +1

      @@8Seven65 not sure about Boss sounding warmer, maybe in the recording it creates this illusion, in the room it's exact opposite.
      . Umm, footswitch I showed in the video is brand new and has new capabilities so i do not think that older footswitches will be able to replace it for Katana. I agree in Boss I had less embellishments in the sound (simply I could not find anything good in it), but embellishments or processing on Fuse, delay, reverb are not changing the main point of the video. They say Boss Katana is so awesome and it's the best non tube combo, and it's just not true... They have Katanas in the guitar centers, please go there and compare to any other non tube combo and you'll hear Katana is not as good as it's advertised. These advertisers just confused tons of people...

    Got both with different power amp, VT20+ and a Katana MKII 100, one for training and the other for gigging (until now i had to play on the studio setup with a Bugera 100W). I had to say your Katana isn't working well, i don't have any kind of "hum". Technically the Vox had a valve preamp and if i agree there is a massive campaign on social media promoting the BOSS Katana i should say there is a misconception about it, unlikelly to the Vox which is really underrated the Katana isn't a plug'n'play amp.
    Sure you'll get a better sound out of the box with a Vox which is designed to be fully operable only tweaking the knobs (there is also limitations), the Katana is designed to be set up by the software Boss tone studio, until that the sound is pretty generic and people miss the most important thing about modeler like global EQ ,the first thing to ajuste in any modeler to start dealing with it.
    Just saying i had my Vox for years now and got a Katana since 2 month, i knew exactly what to expect from the amp and it's even more enjoyable since i have it... but, i won't compare it to the Bugera which got a full valve amp and preamp section and because of that, it make "sculpting the sound" way harder than another amp.

    I do not agree. Had boths and kept the katana head and bought a second one for working room. The katana sounds like an amp, the vox sounds not bad, but the katana is more tweakable in the global eq section. The most important thing the katana reacts dynamic as a tube amp ( not 100%). Test the amp like this: put it to high volume with some drive and turn down the guitar volume to about 20%, no noise reduction, then hit a note and hear how it fades out... The katana fades out slowly with no abrubt breakaway. Digital units fade out hard. The katana with all its tweakable features slams the vx40... But the vx 40 is not a bad amp, but i think the katana is better. My opinion.. i have tube amps which are better, but not so versatile. You cant get wrong with any of these.

    • @andypaul1448
      @andypaul1448 10 месяцев назад +2

      not sure if what you are saying is correct, if you revisit the video, this white and static noice I mentioned was present even when I turn the volume all the way down, so it's off, it's before noice reduction kicks in or anything. I tried many things and settings and tweaks (they would just not fit in the video, that's why I left it out).., but I truly did not find anything fascinated about Katana, and I actually wanted it to be good, I even bought all the accessories and extra pedals for a lot of money, but had to return everything because the expectation for this product created online was too far from the truth... Katana is not a bad combo, but it's good for home practicing, not for pro stage and pro recording (as they claim in the various advertisement videos))... That's all. However if you like it, I cannot stop anyone from using it, enjoy!

      No Problem, to be honest, i do not have this white noise or hiss on mine 2 katana Heads, but i agree in Terms If you Not tweaking IT and using the EQ in the amp at noon, 12 oclock, IT Sounds dull and uninspiring. The EQ, also on the Panel, ist the key factor. Do following on the Clean Channel: Bass at 3/10, mids at 4/10, treble 8/10, gain for Humbucker guitars : 4/10, for single coils 6/10.
      But i must also say, inlike your Videostyle, IT IS really Natural, Not overprocessed and more Like Real Life, Not Advertisement Hype Style AS from Others RUclipsrs. Thanks for that!👍🤘
