Episode 5/6 Albrecht Durers Rhinoceros is one of the most famous works in the British Museum collection. It is also one of the great images of European art--an image that has taken on an iconic status all its own. But what is so special about this simple woodcut of a lumbering, clumsy, Asian animal? Why has it influenced generations of artists, designers and craftsmen ?
Poignant because this was the first the West saw of the rhinoceros and we are witnessing their extinction before our very eyes. The sole male Northern White Rhinoceros lay down his head for the last time March 2018 and other species have seen 90% reduction within 3 generations. Rhinoceros first appeared in the fossil record by the early Eocene Era, ~50 million years ago.
SuperSnugglemonster true 😞
If you study it it looks like a prehistoric snapping turtle brilliant.
Portuguese had traveled and been as far as Australia and Canada and still there was the need of mentioning Colombo's american discover? Mon Dieu ..... I havent seen any turkeys drawn by Master Durer though .... only a Rhino brought from India by PORTUGUESE ! ;)
Some of those show the devil in the etching along with demons being trampled upon by my guess is st George on horseback walking through the valley of the shadow of death 23 rd psalm. Amen
I’m at awe with the quality of art comments from the British Museum and the London National Gallery from your experts here!! . We’ll be visiting the London museums in a few days and I’m getting used to the history and the long hours we’ll be at these museums. Amazing art comments and secrets of art works techniques here. Truly remarkable values for an art lover like me!!!! Thank you!
„lust for the new“ is a nice translation of the German word „Neugier“. One could also say „craving for the new“. ☺️ Duerer is a fantastic artist and was likely also a cool dude. 😎
This channel is great. Learn so much about not only Art but the past history of mankind. Keep it up.
I totally agree with you. I'm not sure if you are generally interested in art. If you like art you might also like the art of Joe Brockerhoff. After a series of persian poetry I've started with a series of paintings of him to be presented fortnightly on my page. Other artists will follow too. The first one is already online. English subtitle is available. Let me know if you liked it. 🥂
The commentators are obsessed by commerce and lay their obsession at Durers feet, yet can't seem to appreciate the art at face value.
Are they wrong about Dürer? Don't think so. He was and is very famous for his art and he got successful with it. And why should he or anyone else be ashamed of it?
They both can go together.
A request to bring back the transcript some of the words on the video are slurred......

Durer é sem dúvidas um dos maiores artistas de todos os tempos. O admiro muito por suas habilidades e por todo amor que dedicava aos seus trabalhos que são todos maravilhosos...
excellent. Thanks a lot. 💓
Fascinating process. I had no idea there were all these wood cutting artisans involved? Love learning something new everyday!
A rhino looks like cattle, like a bull, I think
These types of people are tapped into another realm.
Albercht Durer este unul dintre marii pictori pe care întotdeauna i-am adorat.
Pictor realist , de o factura mistică, foarte aproape de toate culturile înaintașilor de la acea vreme.
Splendidă toată arta lui
I found his self portrait print at a yard sale. I had no idea who it was. It was his funny hat that intrigued me. Now I love his work. I bought the rhino print. Love it.
I wonder if Dore used a workshop too
Unsung hero's. You got names?
“He drew what he could sell” diminishes his possible passion for the religious work

Can't see the problem, really. Religion obviously sold extremely well. Because people were very religious. The rich ones as well.
He can be passionate about something that also sells well. Theres no shame in that either.
I like his sketches.
I saw Dürer's works at the British Museum. I heard from my professors and read about his genius during my study, but what I saw was breathtaking. I love this Museum!💕
ama C they are good thiefs
@@LondonPower - Unfortunately that statement has more truth than it would be desirable. ;-)
