    SCRIPT:
You need to figure out the best way to cover the areas where your floor meets another room, floor, wall, or object like a staircase. That’s where transition molding comes in.
Molding works for all different types of flooring--wood, laminate, vinyl, and around trim, to provide a finished look and beautifully ease the transition to another surface.
There are three basic types of transitions you can use; Reducers, Thresholds, and T-Molding. Today we will be showing you to install wood transitions.
Each transition has its own uses and benefits, so I’ll take you through how and why to install each.
Reducer Molding transitions from hard surface floors to surfaces at lower heights, such as vinyl, tile, or glued down carpet.
To attach, apply glue to the front edge of the molding.
Then apply one or two ¼ inch beads of construction adhesive to the subfloor and seat the molding in place.
To assure a flush surface in any glue down installation, tape the molding to the floor while the glue is setting. If nailing to wood subfloors, pre-drill the molding to prevent splitting. Threshold Molding transitions from new floor to carpet, raised hearths, or at exterior doorways.
It’s important your new floor is installed before the Threshold molding, and that you leave an expansion space beneath it.
To install, “dry fit” the molding in place. It should overlap the floor by ¼ inch to ½ inch.
Quick tip: you may need to “build up” the leg of T-molding using stock material.
Attach it by applying one or two ¼ inch beads of construction adhesive to the subfloor and seat the molding in place.
If nailing to wood subfloors, pre-drill the molding to prevent splitting, and nail it to the subfloor.
T-Molding is used in doorways to transition between two floors of similar height.
Important to leave room beneath the molding for the floor to expand, so you’ll need a gap of approximately 1 and ¼ inches between your two surfaces. To install, apply a 1/4 inch bead of construction adhesive to the top edge of the oldest surface. Seat the molding in place, leaving a minimum 1/4 inch overlap on the wood of the new floor, and make sure you’ve provided that expansion space between the T-Molding and each wood floor.
If nailing to wood subfloors, pre-drill the molding to prevent splitting, and nail it to the subfloor. You may not need to leave an expansion space for harder surfaces like tile.
¾ Inch Quarter Round molding is used to cover expansion spaces between existing baseboards and the flooring, and sometimes under cabinet toe kicks where a wall base won’t fit, or even to create a subtle blend between a floor and a vertical surface. When installing, fasten the molding to the wall--not the subfloor-- to assure the floor can contract and expand freely. Shoe Molding transitions to vertical surfaces in tight spots, and can be a substitute for Quarter Round when you want a thinner profile. You install shoe the same way you install Quarter Round. Selecting the right transitions for your project can give you a clean, professional floor that will look beautiful for years to come.

What is the length of most wood transition flooring come in?

    • @LLFlooring
      @LLFlooring  Год назад +2

For real wood, almost all of our transitions are 78” (about 6.5ft) long. This allows for efficient milling from an 8ft stick, and safer and easier shipping as most 8 ft long materials require special handling and oversized shipping charges.
Laminate MDF & Vinyl transitions are typically a bit longer at 94” (about 7.8ft) as those materials yield better in the manufacturing process. Thank you for your question.
This link allows you to filter by a chosen length range, as well as trim type, i.e. t-mold, reducer, etc.

What type of glue would you use, I can’t use nails into concrete…

Hi Alexis, we offer an adhesive called Bostik Best which comes in a 10 oz or 28 oz tube. You can find this on the LL Flooring website using key word search Bostik Best. You can also use a heavy construction adhesive that is approved for bonding wood to concrete. Thank you for watching!

Hi, what glue can I use? I have Elmer's Glue-All that I use for other projects. Would this work here? Wood transition to vinyl flooring. (with wood floor on the lower side, I assume it shouldn't be glued)

Hi Sergisamongas, if you are using an overlap reducer molding, and the existing wood floors is glued down or nailed down over a wood subfloor. You can place the reducer on the lower wood floor and nail it down by pre-drilling holes into the reducer and hand nailing finish nails to secure the reducer in place. Counter-sink the finish nails using a nail punch, and then fill the holes with a close matching wood filler. Thank you for watching!

What is the thickness of your reducers? I want to install Laminate in an upstairs bedroom with an attached bath. The height of the tile in the bath from the sub-floor is 18mm. So the tile will be higher than the Laminate flooring. I haven't found any information on how much of an offset the reducers are meant for. Not on the LL Flooring website nor your competitors. This is important since I don't want to have to try to strip the reducer to the correct height. Which means I need to know what height the Reducer is meant to compensate for to determine the thickness of the Laminate flooring.
Edit: I did a search on your website for "reducers" and it does have an option to sort by Thickness. It looks like the smallest is 7mm. When I look at those results they are actually about 12mm thick but have a difference from one surface to another of 7.2mm. So 18 - 7.2 = 10.8. So I guess I could use 10mm planks with a very thin underpad?

Thanks for your comment, it’s a good question, it sounds like you will be ‘reverse’ fitting a laminate overlap reducer to come down from the tile to the new laminate. That could look great. It’s hard to solve exactly from a distance but here are some points that seem important: 1. Our matching reducers are made to the same dimensions as the flooring they are matched with. So a 10mm laminate flooring will have a matching reducer that is also made for 10mm. 2. This doesn’t account for any attached padding, which can add a small amount more, so 10mm laminate with pad attached will bring it up to 11/12mm+
Did you locate the "Warranty & Guides" part to open more details and graphics on each product page? Example:

One option might be one of the waterproof T-molds instead of reducer, which could allow a small degree of tilt in the direction you need. It would be great to ask the manager at your closest store for options they have in stock at the moment. You can call or visit LLFlooring.com/stores
Please follow up with how that project goes, good luck. 👍

@@LLFlooring Thanks for the install guide. I hadn't found that. Yes, the top of the bathroom tile is 18mm above the subfloor. So it is higher than any laminate flooring including padding unless it was like 13mm laminate with a 5mm pad, which I don't want to do. It looks like you have a margin of 3mm to 4mm. That's good information. I've looked at a lot of hard surface reducers and none of them give the distance between the two levels. This seems like the most important piece of information. From my searches I can tell that others are also wanting this information. Most just resign themselves to doing something custom and making it work. I realize a manufacturer can't make reducers for every possible difference in height but showing the actual difference in the levels would be very useful. Some will show every measurement but that. Lol. Thanks for the reply.

Bad Video, completely ignores the issue of height dimensions between the two floors.
