  • Ukraine just intercepted a Russian fiber-optic-controlled FPV drone for the first time.
    On January 30, 2025, Ukraine’s 414th Strike UAV Battalion, known as 'Madyar’s Birds', successfully detected and destroyed a Russian fiber-optic drone-a system once believed to be unstoppable. Using mobile radar technology, Ukrainian forces are now able to identify, track, and intercept these drones before they reach their targets.
    In this video, we cover:
    How Ukraine’s mobile radar detected and intercepted the drone
    Why Russia’s fiber-optic FPV drones were considered invulnerable
    What radar system Ukraine may have used
    How this could change drone warfare on the front lines

    Excellent! Only one observation, though. Yes, fiber is jam-proof as far as blocking its reception of radio instructions from the pilot. However, there are 2 possible technologies that could work. I found a couple of recently published papers on the subject involving High Powered Microwaves (HPM) using a generator at 2.4 GHz, a 1 KW power supply, and a conical horn to focus the energy at the drone. The second technique is by using a HPM generator, 2.45 GHz, w/ a high-voltage transformer, some electronics to control power output, a magnetron, & a conical horn to focus. This system will use the HPM & amplify the signal into a powerful, directed electromagnetic pulse, essentially, an EMP which will fry any electronics, regardless of the fiber.

    • @davidcollishaw2771
      @davidcollishaw2771 День назад +4

      microwaves and EMP can fry the circuits so you get drones wrapped in foil and hardened circuits, but the weapons give off a brief detectable trace making the user subject to conventional weaponry. both sides have had microwave zappers for the past two years but they don't appear the winner they claimed to be unless just locating mavic surveillance units.
      there's a reason both sides are making bird shot rounds for the AK.
      the west meanwhile is suffering what they claimed china was unable to 15 years ago - innovate, china now leads in 64 out of 65 technical fields.while the US leads in 6 or 7. which applies across the board. Globalising and corporate buyouts of the competition has made western arms manufacture much much weaker than it was in the 60s

It's totally possible but if it were simple we'd already have good anti-drone radio weapons.

    It looks like the fiber optic drones are using a long and thin cable that has no outer insulation. It makes it look almost like a simple fishing line. I wonder if this means the signals **can** actually be jammed or even overwhelmed and the drones controlled by a new signal. Fiber optic cables almost always use infrared laser light (perhaps that means these lines would be visible at night with infrared cameras) so they could direct a much stronger infrared light beam at the drones and thus their cabling and essentially "jam" the optical photodetector onboard the drone. Maybe even very strong infrared lights that blast light omnidirectionally could be developed like a jammer if using the correct wavelength(s). At night you would basically be a massive infrarered target beacon, but during the day it could be very useful to jam these drones. I dunno, it just seems interesting, hopefully they are looking into it.

      Fibre optic cables are made of several different layers, they have total internal reflectance due to the high refractive index of the core compared to the low refractive index of the cladding around the core, then there is another layer around the cladding to protect it from damage, it would be almost impossible to scramble the digital signal travelling in the core with an external light source shone on the cable, although a powerful laser could be used to damage or cut the cable.

    • @davidcollishaw2771
      @davidcollishaw2771 День назад

      they never had any big bang weapons.that was agreed in budapest but they were always russias warheads. but cling to your myth if you want, they were never and still aren't western allies - we just want to steal their stuff (the Donbass has gas fields the eu is desperate for which is why they pushed the coup because they didn't want to pay market prices, the US wants cheap minerals now china is stopping the supply - the US has those minerals but it costs a lot of money to create the means to extract them ).
      Ukraine was never a place or country or people just a region on the borders it was a project to steal big parts of russia from the 1600s the language was invented by four polish professors in 1890s Those claiming to be pure blood Ukrainians are in fact polish galicians who are hated by everyone due to their habit of killing their neighbours to please western european powers. 150,000 rusyans in ww1 and around 12 million Russians, poles, jews, hungarians, roma etc.. in ww2. as a race they need to be expunged but then the last Nazi rally was held in the US in nov 1941 anf they embraced tens of thousands post war, which is probably why the US refuses all accountability for the 25m civilian deaths on its hands since ww2
      if they had kept nuclear weapons they would have sold them or simply not afforded the maintenance after the west destroyed their economy on purpose in the 90s.
      weapons need to be refurbished constantly they cannot just sit there. in most big weapons the tritium or other ium boosters used to increase the yield degrades and you get a fizzle.
      the US does have the fissiles from those weapons though as each carries a signature from the reactor it was born in and has probably made a dirty false flag weapon to use when appropriate - unfortunately russia has not played ball and is not doing big arrow moves or trying to take the whole state which was the original western plan to turn ukraine into iraq and give Russsia a forever war
      NATO thinks it can invade Russia from the baltics in 2027, but Russia will simply take the baltics back as per their independence agreements, and NATO cannot as well as will not fight. the pentagon has been planning the demise of NATO for twenty years based on a 2030-50 timeline. Ukraine has knocked thirty years off western hegemony and now they are going to enter the post empirical poverty stage as their debts catch up with them.

    All this interception of fibre-optic drones sounds nice on paper, but the fact is, that Ukraine is on it's last legs, with most of its soldiers defecting / deserting their positions, so stopping some fibre-optic drones wouldn't really make much difference in the scheme of things. The Russians would just use other systems - and with the supply of US arms stopped, and the cash-strapped European Union not able to contribute much in the way of useful weapons, Ukraine really doesn't have too many options left.

    I wonder if at some point we shall see drone teams where 2 or more drones go out on an intercept. Half the flight takes the fiber optic drone down while the other half hunts down the opposite drone team. They know they and in the close area so, I just wonder if this a possible evolution in tactics and counter drone operations.

    Radars every 2-4km across a thousand km long front line is extremely expensive… If the range can't be improved, it might prove cost-prohibitive. You might laugh at that and say that losing lives and equipment is even more expensive, and you'd be right. But money is the limiting factor for everything, and you also need to buy weapon systems, ammo, supplies, everything. I don't think there's a single army in the world that can afford everything that it wants, not even the US military. I wish the defenders all the success in the world. God knows they deserve it. These are tough choices and tough trade-offs that have to be made...

    I don’t think for 1 second that there will be a full radar coverage of the front line with the number of radars available, however a good operator with a certain radar could pick up the drones at a lot greater distance than you think ! Ukraine shouldn’t deploy their Radars closer than drone range anyway.

    I’m hardly convinced by one lucky interception both sides get lucky intercepting drones as there are both completing in the same airspace and obviously there are plenty of videos like this. Even if was true this would only be good for defending fixed targets an offensive force like we have seen this week is completely defenceless.

    Good. They spotted and intercepted a $500 drone using radar. Which is most likely worth tens of thousands of dollars or more. Ok. Don't radars glow like a Christmas tree? Isn 't radar radiation something that is detected by other radars almost instantly?even if the jammers are calling in artillery.....

    What's the likelihood that an interceptor drone could be fitted with some sort of passive cable cutter? Some sort of blade hanging out the bottom, some weighted piano wire, something that resembles a large seat belt cutter, etc. Maybe even as crazy as metal rotor blades strong enough to cut the cable without taking damage or a spinning cutter powered by a motor?
    These wouldn't be as reliable, I'm sure, but for lower threats they could avoid the sacrifice of their own drone and some explosives. Being cut off from the cable should make the target drones drop like rocks to the ground and detonate harmlessly. It could be a cost saving measure, especially with Russia being larger and having more resources to waste in attrition.
