I suppose Christoper followed Mr Oak and killed him so to replace him as the Master of the cabin and the guardian of the old papers. Mr Oak is willing to fight for his life (he sharpened the knife for self-defense) but has accepted he will die anyway (he asks Christoper to care for the roses, and confesses he can't really guard the papers as well as Christoper, a student, could). Mr Oak's cat has also been defeated by Christoper's cat and not expected to return, and this is a sign of what is to be repeated with the two men.
