    Mine just arrived today. I had a bag of coffee I found in the back of my cupboard, so I ran that through for a little seasoning…but no where near 7 kg. Then I dialed in my usual coffee and the shots were truly excellent. Thx for your videos!

      Glad you found it the video helpful. It is a great grinder. I think the ‘experts’ have been influenced by each other’s views. Every one of them say seasoning is essential when it’s not true. You can get great coffee without but excellent prep is crucial.
      Things do seem a bit easier in terms of consistency after a while. Whether it’s seasoning or just that I’m used to the grinder, I’m not sure.

    I did asked if my friends who own a specialty coffee shop in my city for some coffee they would have throw away because of some issues at the roast process.
    I had 4 kg I could grind to season without wasting it technically and regarding the taste, I'm exactly at the same point as you even without any WDT process so I'm very happy.
    Thanks for the video !

    Great review! I’m patiently awaiting the arrival of my 078s to replace my current Niche Zero here in Adelaide, and your review gives me hope amongst all the negativity I’ve come across re the need to season with 10kg of beans and the 078s being neck and neck with the Niche etc etc, so thank you!

    • @UnderstandingCoffee
      @UnderstandingCoffee  6 месяцев назад

      Glad it was helpful! Seasoning definitely helps but you don’t need 6 kg. After about a kilo or so, things got better. Whether this was because of seasoning or simply because I got the hang of using the grinder, I’m not sure! It’s not a forgiving grinder and it will amplify any issues with puck preparation. Which is probably why so many struggle with it. Especially if you are used to the Niche which is quite forgiving.

    Having made a couple of good consecutive shots, and then having all heck break loose, I went back to my hand grinder until my waste beans arrive for seasoning. As for the duty cycle, we are talking about a 400 watt brushless motor, so I'm not concerned about grinding a kilo or two a day. It seems nuts to do WDT for over a minute to prevent channelling. I barely do 10 seconds worth from my hand grinder, and that probably isn't at all necessary. But I will try it to see if it helps.

    • @UnderstandingCoffee
      @UnderstandingCoffee  6 месяцев назад

      It does get better with seasoning or perhaps I just got used to it. But 6 kg isn’t necessary. A kilo or so and it gets easier. Let me know how you get on with the WDT

    Thank you for the comparison. Can you offer advice regarding this grinder vs niche duo? Espresso milk based med to dark roast.

    • @UnderstandingCoffee
      @UnderstandingCoffee  7 месяцев назад +1

      I would love to try the Niche Duo and compare it with the 078S. I can't comment though as I do not have access to a Duo. Seems to be a good grinder from what I hear. Whether the low rpm at 530 rpm is an issue or not is not clear.
      For medium roast coffee (especially towards the lighter end) I think the 078S works really well. For dark roasts, I suspect it really doesn't matter. The Niche zero works equally well.

    Hey, nice review! Have received mine a few days ago... Will test it now. I hope it will not need any seasoning or not as much as mentioned elsewhere...
    Little thought on your style:
    Nice, calm, but sometimes a bit to much like reading from a prompter (looking for script not to forget anything?!)
    Keep up your work 😊

      @@UnderstandingCoffee Maybe try putting them behind the camera so it doesn't look like you're looking away from the audience.
      Also thanks for the video! It was quite insightful. I'm now excited for my 078s 😀

    How is the grinder for filter? I'm wondering if it would be an upgrade over Wilfa Uniform.

      Sorry I can’t comment as I haven’t used it for filter yet. But other users seem to be getting good results.

    One notch is equal to 5/8 seconds of change in the shot for the Timemore? Wonder what the micron adjustment is per click in that case, seems like a lot!

      It is possible to move the dial less than a notch. Not the most easiest to work with TBH.

    Hello,it is about 4 weeks I used the new sculptor 078s, grinding about 3kgr coffee beans for espresso brewing.
    Firstly, the coffee had flavor ,the taste was balanced without bitterness and the inconsistency was
    acceptable for new grinder.
    Suddenly ,I noticed that the brewing is inconsistent ,no flavor and too much bitterness.
    I also noticed that I need to grind finer !!
    The coffee beans are the same and also the brewing routine.
    I think that the burrs worn out a lot which is not acceptable for new grinder.
    What are your thoughts ?

    • @UnderstandingCoffee
      @UnderstandingCoffee  8 месяцев назад

      Thanks for getting in touch. Grinder burrs are generally robust and should not wear out with 3 kg, unless you have managed to get a stone in the beans. But you would have noticed this.
      When were the beans roasted?

    • @user-dx7pi4hl1f
      @user-dx7pi4hl1f 8 месяцев назад

      I don't know when the beans roasted.I had checked for a stone before grinding.@@UnderstandingCoffee

    • @UnderstandingCoffee
      @UnderstandingCoffee  8 месяцев назад

      @@user-dx7pi4hl1fif the beans are old, you will not get a consistent extraction. Try beans that have been freshly roasted but rested for at least 2 weeks for medium roast and at least 1 week for dark roast.

    I also find seasoning not to be necessary and I'll copy your toothpick trick. So far the dial is the only thing that I dislike about the 078s.

      @@UnderstandingCoffee I've had the Niche for a while and love it. The workflow is basically perfect. My 078S I've only had for just over a week. I've seasoned it relatively well (about 4 or 5lbs) and I'm starting to get to the point where channeling isn't a HUGE issue (still a small issue though).
      I absolute hate the hopper on the 078S. It's difficult to load beans in without them falling out and the popcorning of the grinder causes them to shoot out too. I lose about 1 to 2 beans every single time I use this grinder. I actually ordered a hopper off of Etsy that extends the height of the hopper and makes it easier to load beans into.
      Right now, Niche Zero is king and it's not even close. We'll see what happens when I get my Etsy hopper in.

      Thanks for sharing your experience. Are you doing a hot start and using RDT? Hot start isn’t necessary in my view especially if you are grinding at about 1100 rpm. RDT can be problematic with beans sticking to the hopper and this results in inconsistent grinding. I would suggest trying without RDT and a hot start. Also WDT in the container for 30 seconds at least.
      The Niche is excellent for the darker side of things. Not so great for medium and lighter. For me, the 078S unlocked flavours that I never found with the Niche

    • @NubRusty
      @NubRusty 6 месяцев назад

      @UnderstandingCoffee I RDT and hot start. I just push the beans in a little bit if they get stuck. I've tried not using RDT but the static is too much. Every single reviewer has had the exact same issues with popcorning, difficulty loading the hopper, and channeling. I just can't see this grinder being better than the Niche even if the flavor is better. I drink milk drinks and use a medium roast 90% of the time anyways and the Niche is better for those.

    • @UnderstandingCoffee
      @UnderstandingCoffee  6 месяцев назад

      I will be releasing a video soon on the effects of RDT. Suffice to say that it another variable to get wrong! Plenty of WDT will help. Also a pretty extraction doesn’t always mean good flavours and vice versa!
