  • You’ve probably walked past one today - a logo that’s quietly been redesigned.
    Sometimes the changes are dramatic. But just as often, they’re subtle.
    So much so that you’d be hard-pressed to realize they were redesigned at all.
    Logos get redesigned for many reasons. Sometimes they simply need a refresh, sometimes they need to be made more scalable, and sometimes it’s to signal a change in a company’s direction.
    In this video, we’ll take a look at some of the most recent logo redesigns for media companies.
    From Warner Bros. to the BBC, we’ll analyze logo changes big and small, why they’ve tweaked them, and how successfully they’ve been executed.

      I would like to see a huge logo redesign with multiple steps in between. That would be tough for companies that mainly focus on physical products. But for digital first companies, that would be fun and actually practical.
      Sometimes people just hate change. Even if the new one is obviously better.
      But let say you make a redesign, and then intentionally create loads of intermediate steps. And then move a step every season. Then after 2 years, announce the transition to everybody. That would be fun.

    • @ilghiz
      @ilghiz 3 месяца назад +3

      @@li_tsz_fung , it would but might be hard to implement cuz most designs keep up with trends. You can't go flat when others go 3D. It'll jump to the eye.

    Back in 2005, when RUclips was founded, cathode ray tubes were still common in households for television, but large Plasma and later LED screens were already taking over and with them the switch from 4:3 to 16:9 formats. Thus the tube was no longer a tube, and the blown-up version of the 4:3 rectangle less and less a symbol for an actual TV set. It makes sense to reimagine it as a button with rounded corners.

    The modern Warner Bros. logo is better for the Pictures division (though I really dislike how the on screen version already looks really dated), but I love what they did on the 2019 logo. Still exists on the side of the Blu rays for now, but I was hoping they’d keep it for specific things that matched it better, like the Animation division.

    Speaking of media company logos, perhaps the boldest and most controversial media company logo update in my country was the 1992 update of the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation’s “gem” logo (commonly known as the “exploding pizza”). The original mid-century logo was designed in a hurry but it was still exceptional. The problems with it began when networks started putting their logo in the corner of the screen, and the CBC logo was too intricate to use for that purpose, so they decided to give it a “make-under” by retaining the basic shape but removing many of its pieces. Like the ABC logo shown here, the circles in the original logo had a slit to stand for “C”; that was removed in the update, and I think it was a good choice. It may not have been popular at launch, but the current CBC logo is iconic (in both senses of the word) and Canadians have grown to recognise and adore it!

    The ABC logo really isn't futureproofing, it's less readable. All they should have done is removed the 3D black circle and replaced it with solid black, but if I recall correctly, they have used a version like that in the past. You're right that it'll need a new redesign in a few years.

    Absolutely love that I had this recommended to me. I've been really interested in logo design for a good while, and this definitely feeds that appetite.
    One bit I'll say about the video is that that 2019 redesign of the Warner Bros logo was a masterclass in brand modernization. It knew how to pay respects to the logo's history while doing away with the baggage it accrued over the years. And then Zaslav went and reversed it... I never hear about that guy in a positive light, even with a little curiosity hobby like this!

  • @gabrielebianchi8976
    @gabrielebianchi8976 3 месяца назад +2

    Great video!
    I think the main issue for rebranding in media is that sometime they are a bit too drastic for their own sake.
    As we use logos as a logical substitute of a name and we see media more than our friends an abrupt change feels sometimes very abrupt and illogic.
    It’s just like you call your friend and he suddenly respond that you shouldn’t refer to him by that name anymore.
    It’s a bit awkward and, at times upsetting.
    --
    In the BBC logo, I think there is a clear issue with the spacing: the bold contrast makes you focus on the letters and you feel compelled to read but the spacing of the letters within the box, and the spaces between the boxes actually makes it harder to read, and the additional (double) spacing tricks your mind to think that you finished reading while you didn’t.

      One thing that upsets me is the simplification of logos in luxury brands.
      And I don’t understand because allmost all luxury brands have their origin in iconic and, at least originally, artisanal-Made products, so in general should aspire to maintain their identity rather to pursue a “0,99$ app look”.

    should be noted that the "before" ABC logo you showed was phased out back in 2013 in favor of a logo with a more refined 3d feel with a yellow/blue/red gradient (dependent on the program). that 2013 logo also reverted the letters back to the original ABC circle logo, the 2007 one had modified it a little. the 2022 one has modified it further, of course

    I have to disagree with you in relation to the bbc rebrand. The icons for services which are “to join the dots” fails to do so. To start with, without the names of the services underneath the icons (especially news, sounds and sports) would you know what they represent. I don’t look at the news icon and think news. You then have the situation where the icons are not used on screen, to my mind failing its objective to join the dots.
    The problem with moving across to bbc reith as a font is that the font was designed for its readability. It’s designed to not be flashy. The problem is that using it for a logo makes the logo blend into the background. It no longer stands out.
    The final with the master brand is that there were a few dodgy remakes of the 1997 logo which the BBC used. Because the new logo is so similar to the 1997 logo it looks like a dodgy markup.

    The one good thing David Zaslav has ever done. Pentagram's redesign was good, but lost a lot of what made the logo iconic. The 2023 redesign feels like a good modernization of the classic logo with Pentagram's typeface giving it a more unique identity.

      Pentagram didn't create typeface, it's MCKL that made the typeface.

    Absolutely now media company including tech and social media companies would EVER want to be seen as a utility. And this even includes the telecommunications firms like AT&T that arguably are utilities.
    To do so would invite regulation from the government AS a utility and a devaluation of any try brand value (cf ConEd, PSE&G, PG&E etc )
