As a long time Panasonic user, I agree everything you said about the Panasonic, Sony and Canon cameras. But I think you missed the ball with Nikon. They have gone all out with the Z9, with 8K 60p, shutter angle, waveforms, internal Prores/Prores RAW and even a new internal N-RAW codec which seems very similar to Blackmagic's BRAW format. Granted its price is 5500$ and above the threshold you have set for this video, but I'am very excited for these features to trickle down to their cheaper more compact bodies. The S lenses are all breathing corrected, so Nikon seems to be heading in the right direction as far as video is concerned. It the system that i'am most excited about.

@@robertfeliciano5723 Very true in Nikon needing more video focused features. I personally like the colors out of Nikons over the Sonys and Canons, as well as their lenses. I’ve preordered the Z9 as my photography camera, I am hoping that I can get good video footage for my needs. Caleb’s point is 💯. The one thing that wasn't factored into this was price point. If all these were priced at a similar price point I would agree with the ranking a bit more, but with a price cap of $5000 there are vastly different cameras and feature sets at these price points. For example the Blackmagic Pocket 4k is offering a near untouchable image format at close to the lowest 5th of this price bracket, and I feel one is sacrificing the "niceties" to achieve that price point. If we also factor price into the equation then Blackmagic deserves a higher ranking given it also has an incredible user interface experience when compared to the likes of some of these other cameras that cost almost 3 times it's price. That means one could in theory have multiple cameras which in my opinion is a potentially a bigger deal then having autofocus for certain types of video/film shooting.

And if we're going EXTRA hard, those "A" cameras also have to have internal RAW recording and accept standard SSDs as media, like the Ninja V but built in.

Thank you for this awesome video, great job!
One topic that is always neglected is SOUND! Man, if these cameras could have at least one XLR input with (optional) phantom power, plus 32 bit float recording, life would be perfect! No more bulky external sound recorders, less or no external microphone wiring and no more need to sync audio in post. And why 32 bit float? Because of the insane dynamic range, which will make it impossible to clip your audio or to introduce a lot of noise when amplifying very low sound (check out recorders like Zoom F6, Sound Devices Mixpre 3 ii or Tascam Portacapture X8).

Cameras have never been the most important factor in production quality. Your ranking should be...
    1. Story
    2. Audio Quality
    3. Composition
    4. Lighting
    5. Lens
    6,7,8,9. Other important things
    10. Camera

That's great be he's talking about cameras specifically here. Dude has dozens of videos covering that other stuff. And BTW, cameras ARE important for production quality. You try making a video on a camera that overheats every 2 minutes or burns through a battery in 10 minutes. There is no video without a working camera, it's like hunting without a weapon.

  • @JunctionRunner

From what I recall that 30 minute limit is a legal/tax thing, where if a camera films under it, it's a photo camera but longer and it's a video camera which adds some sort of hassle enough to warrant it. Rusty on the details, but that's why that exists.

Great video again, Caleb! I went back and forth with Sony A7Siii and Canon R5 but ended up buying R5. Eliminated the 2 mentioned problems (record limits and overheating) by buying Ninja V and will be upgrading to Ninja V+ now that they have the $999 promo. With original 24-70 lenses on both cameras and taking that Ninja V+ promo into account price difference is around $1,000 in Sonys favour. Sony has better low light performance but Canon+Ninja has 4K HQ, 8K, Prores + Prores Raw, big screen, SSD recording and as a big bonus high quality pro stills capability. A no-brainer for me.

The only thing limiting time on that old camera is power and sd card. You can solve the power but I don't think you can do much about the SD Card other than get a 1TB.

It’s very occasional for me to dislike a video on RUclips, and it looks like it won’t matter for a long time since RUclips’s going to hide dislikes soon.
Anyways ! The reason why I did here is I feel like you lacked objectivity and fairness on all those brands. Even the ones that I’m not a huge fan of. You are comparing camera brands for videos but for most of them, you’re comparing stills cameras that also do videos (canon, Panasonic, Nikon, Fuji…). That works for people who want to buy cameras that do both, but that’s not the whole picture. For instance, when you say that blackmahic should go boxed cameras , they already did. It’s just not what the BMPCC is. Panasonic to make a camera that is more video targeted ? They have the B1h that does exactly that ! Canon having trouble with recording limits ? How about the C100 or the C70?
I understand what you did, meaning you went for DSLR shaped cameras (that being said the ZCam is not) but again that’s not the whole picture and i think that comparing camera brands for video based on cameras that are designed as an extra feature is not ideal
I hope you won’t get my comment wrong and I usually like your content A LOT but heh I felt like my input would be useful there

The problem with Canon's cine cameras is that they don't have a compelling feature set for the price. $2700 for 1080p/60 8-bit 420 with an 8MP super35 sensor is laughable. (C100 mark II) A Sony a6400 has better video options for 1/3rd of the price.

Love the video and agree with a lot of the points you made. IMO Canon and Sony (even with their respective flaws) are a fair amount ahead of the rest of the brands right now, primarily because of AF and lens ecosystems. Closed lens ecosystems are not helping any of the brands, and Sony seems to be the only company who realizes that having an open ecosystem continually boosts sales of your cameras. Technically Canon is a closed ecosystem too but I give them a pass since you have the option of adapting EF glass, and that opens your options up quite a bit.
Panasonic does seem right on the cusp of competing with Sony/Canon but in addition to their AF woes, the L-Mount is pretty limited right now and that is a big turnoff for new buyers. Even their nifty 50 retails for ~$500 USD when other brands comparable lenses are hundreds less. Although Sigma is already doing L-Mount lenses, I think Panasonic needs to lean on the third parties even more and get some budget options out there for prospective buyers of their FF bodies.

I think Sony is head and shoulders above the competition for one reason... They publish parts lists and schematics for their older cameras. You can repair their older cameras after they've gone out of their service life if you REALLY want to and that just adds so much value to a purchase.
Im not aware of any other company doing this.
