Controlling your breathing in a fight is really important. In a fight, the environment is very stressful. Many people forget to breathe when they are striking!
You have roughly ten seconds of oxygen that will allow you to fight in the beginning. Not taking deep breaths before a fight can make you weak, and you will not be able to endure throughout it.
Having said that, it's best to take numerous deep breaths before because your blood will be oxygenated, which will allow you to perform better under the grappling and striking in a fight.
When you're in a fight, expecting shots and striking back, your body will not be able to breathe properly due to the speed of it all, due to your abs constricting when you're in a fighting stance, etc.
This is why it's so crucial to breathe as much air as possible in before your opponent and you start to fight. You need oxygen in your cells to be able to defend yourself properly.

I HATE this feeling, the feeling of nervousness, the freezing up, the FEAR! I hate my nervous system for betraying me right before a fight.

When you get that feeling just know that is your fight or flight response, easiest way to calm down a bit is to take a deep breath, inhale through your nose and exhale through your mouth.

+jakc3d its not that bad. you just got to learn to use it. fear makes you prepared for things to come. im nervous all the time, it makes me fight better.freezing up only happens to me when im drunk in a bar. for some reason it don't want me to fight in that state.

I thought I was the only one who couldn't breathe whilst fighting properly but it's something in everyone so that's good to hear

Slow deep breathing also keeps the heart rate down. If your heart rate is too fast (145 bpm or above), you start to loose your cognitive thought process. The amygdala part of the brain takes over, resulting in a more primitive state of mind (fight or flight respone). Where around 145 bpm is when the body is at its highest level with regards to strength, survival and still has the use of complex motor skills When above and beyond that level of heart rate, you loose all fine and complex motor skills, and can only use your gross motor skills.

Yes indeed, it can be quite challenging. Practice controlling your breathing when you're shadow boxing or sparring. This will help.

+christinbichle le its natural to be nervous. its not a bad thing you can train and it will make you better, but its the bodys natural awareness.fear is good to.
