We're curious, what's your favourite cold weather meal? The one food you turn to that instantly warms you up? For Jack, it's a pie... For Gabby it's a hearty mushroom soup! How about you? Thank you for watching this week! It's been a chilly few days on board but the fire is keeping us toasty. If you enjoyed this video and would like to buy us a coffee, that would be so kind! You can do so here: ko-fi.com/thistinylife See you next week, Jack + Gabby xx
You guys are awesome, and doing a brilliant job as parents. Id just say, forget the clock, just do meals whenever, feed bubs whenever, do chores whenever......life is so short, so enjoy the moment you re in. xxxx
As a grandfather of nine, I love how you two have made a handcrafted mobile for the baby! I have just become a subscriber to your channel after watching your channel a bit! I appreciate your channel from America, with your odyssey within the narrow boat community in England.
Bert’s mobile looks so lovely. Well done guys. Gabby, try & rest when you can. Feeding a newborn is so draining, you deserve self care too. The stew looked delicious
I love the mobile! Using a map to make hot air balloons was an amazing idea :) I would have loved to have seen some origami cranes to give Jobert a bit of variety seeing as how, from his perspective, the hot air balloons might look a bit odd and shapeless.
I'm staying on Piano Raft in West Yorkshire. I just reached 23.6C and 34%humidity in the living room. Mixture of actions. Stones around fireplace. Now below 0 I had to top up fireplace with diesel heater 1kW. No insulation yet. I'm on scaffolding boards 5 inches above the canal. Lost few barrels.
You probably know this already..but having had four stoves (one being a relatively new , good German maker and 18 months old) the chimney area had a tiny leak (found by Heatas engineer when it was too late..after the annual chimney cleaning -and before fire was lit for season- so leak was missed ‘cos leak was next to impossible to find) Get a carbon monoxide alarm installed. Husband and I ended up a week in hospital with carbon monoxide poisoning (which we thought was ‘flu!!! The stove was condemned by fire dept., We were told to get alarms fit but we lived to tell the tale…and rest of village folk got alarms installed immediatly. Just a friendly reminder. Love to you all. Fabulous video and vlog, as always. XXXX
Brilliant mobile, glad Gabby took over cutting out the shapes or you'd still be sitting on the floor snipping away Jack! Gaffer tape is wonderful stuff but hopefully you won't need it on the chimney. Keep warm, keep being your lovely selves & see the 4 of you soon Xx
Well done terrific mobile! Jo is looking bigger & alert! Obviously feeling right at home bless ‘im! It’s darn cold here too, it’s been -8 deg - too cold to snow!!! This is still the warmest place in Canada! Global cooling going on now!!! Love n’Hugs xxx
So beautifully filmed, you guyz! Love the closeups and short/long focus shots and ambiance. Felt like I was right there like one of the canal sparrows... enjoying that beautiful "sunny but cold" winter morning with you! 🐦 ☀️ ❄️ 😹 Thank you for sharing... cheers from the coast of Oregon! 🐟 🌊 🌲
Dear Jack, Gabby and baby, I can't express how much I appreciate your determination for making a go of narrowboat life and with a baby in tow. Having lived in a rural part of British Columbia, relying on wood heat exclusively, the secret to keeping warm is to keep the wood stove going, haha I know. Seriously wood heat will dry the air out in the cabin faster than anything and by getting rid of the damp one feels warmer. Damp air always feels colder than dry air. Keep up the GREAT work with the videos. Mark Alberta, Canada (just had a spell of -30 and -40)
What a lovely mobile Joubert will love it! I bet he will like the reflections of the water on the ceiling as well with the moving patterns. You guys are doing an amazing job. 😊
Love this whole episode. Especially the joint effort of the children's mobile. it;s lovely as is, but you could also add to it and make it more shiny/colourful as you find other cool things he would like!! x
Yep keep that munchkins brain working every second of his waking moments it is a must the more color the better be good to him some day he will be pushing you around in your chair. Believe me I'm almost there now and my son passed away in 2012. so when the time comes it's a motor on our chaires . Take care stay safe and enjoy every minute you have with him. Happy Trails
Another delightful video! When my babies were newborns, I always felt it took time for them to adjust to not being connected to the 24/7 umbilical chord! That and just the rapid growth needs so much nourishment! Hang in there Gabby, it's tiring but so worth it for long term health for Jo! You might be interested in two other channels that both have youngsters and a similar mindset to yourselves, Free Range Homestead and Mossy Bottom. Not narrowboaters but worth a look ... I think you'd like them. Take care lovely people!
Little babies like Jo prefer to look at faces, or simple black and white images. Swirl shapes attract a lot of gaze time. Remember to have any image or interesting parts face baby, as the mobile is for him, not onlookers!
Re leak. Watching you tighten the band. Could turning a it round so that the join is at the highest point may help. I thought the water may be running down to the join. Just an idea. Love your vlogs. X
What a lovely vlog. I like your positive attitude and how you manage so well with life on your boat 👍. The mobile for Joubert is beautiful, you did a great job. Take care
Babies everywhere in the small living/van life worlds. You two, Travel Beans, and Eamon and Bec. Love seeing how you’re incorporating your little tater tot into boat life.
@@thistinylifeit's freezing outside I'm watching you infront of a coal fire at the min, who grooms tilly she always looks so smart and stay warm definitely
re the coal, have you tried Lektofuel Night Briquettes? I hated using coal too, and although we don't need to keep a stove going all night anymore, we've used these briquettes a couple of nights to keep the chill off for the kids and the stove is still warm to the touch in the morning. Just thought it worth mentioning. On another note, totally love your boat and aesthetic choices, absolutely dreamy!
Just a bit of advice take it or leave it but while little man is asleep lay him down. I had my 3rd son in my arms so much that he was like a piece of velcro until he went to school. Its cute but at the age of 54 my back is suffering and living on a boat now isnt great fir me when it come to changing the gas bottles and other heavy jobs. You really are a lovely little family and doing a great job.
Good advice thank you!! We do try and pop him down for at least a few hours during the day but he doesn't always last that long before a little winge for a cuddle!
This has been one of my favourite vlogs, I love watching the both of you. Stay warm, sometimes it’s ok to use things like coal. 💛 love from Australia The mobile is fantastic 🤩
Tomato 🍅 soup and crusty wholemeal rolls for a cold Baltic day . Joubert is growing and changing so fast ...have u swept ur chimney recently ...just done mine surprising how bunged up they get . Stay warm and dry 😊
Instant coffee and instant creamer are survival foods.... hallelujah!...If you got the good stuff... Amazing!!... but if not! Roll out the backup! Enjoy! I had three coffee makers that died within a few months of each other... instant coffee got me through a month before I had the time to get a new one.
I just love your humour and casual way with everything life throws at you. I was wondering, are you on a permanent mooring ,as you have a few things stored on the towpath. It must be nice if you have somewhere more permanent 🤗
How adorabel your Joubert is and I am sure he will love your expertly crafted mobile. Re his night sleeping, I notice you hold him when he is sleeping during the day, he would be soothed by your heartbeat, your body warmth and firm hold so at night mimic that in his cot. Swaddle him firmly before you put him down, you can buy a device that has a heartbeat sound that would do the trick, also babies love whitenoise, it mimics the sound in utero search white noise for babies online, another trick is to fill a large glove with wheat, sago or whatever you have, fill it just enough so that it is floppy then fix it firmly at the opening and lay it on him, this mimics your firm hold when carrying him. I have worked with wee ones for many years and found tricks that would help them sleep. ❤ When he is having a growth spurt he will want to feed more often. This usually occurs 1 to 3 weeks, 6 to 8 weeks, 3 months, 6 months, 9 months. Happy parenting and enjoying you little darling.
We're in the 6 to 8 weeks time so growth spurt explains it!! We have found the heartbeat womb sounds to be really helpful during the night to get him back to sleep. The glove trick sounds very interesting!!! Thank you ✨✨
It's an ethanol burner! We bought it in the summer to take with us on outdoors adventures and now use it to bring a hot kettle from on top of the stove to the boil ✨

The bit at the end with Tilly and the baby mobile! 😍
Honestly that is so good! That will be a precious heirloom in years to come! ♥️🐚
The mobile is so cool and you can add and change it so easily. Clever
Also that’s my absolute favourite kinda weather too. 😊❄️☀️

Great job on the mobile making. Looks fab. The ending with Tilly enjoying it really made me chuckle 😂😊
Making memories.... No coffee arrrggghhhh. Well done folks. Soon be spring and hopefully a little warmer.
No coffee is a nightmare! We have since stocked up haha

They make foil tape for chimneys, that would be good
Great mobile! Maybe add several spots of color on different panels, so when they spin, the baby is more stimulated?
Love the mobile. Tilly seems thrilled 😁
Joubert has grown so much bless him. Love the mobile, can't beat handmade! 🤩

Are you gassless? How does it work. In the heat of the British summer, will you have to fire up the log burner to cook?
We are indeed! We have an induction hob which runs purely off our solar panels in the summer, so we won't be sweating inside 😅
Watch for the white out thats forecast 😮 dont get snowed in
I was thinking your mobile looked very nice. It crossed my mind that you could make one with Oragommie figures.
Origami?! Great idea
Great mobile!!! ( I’d love to get you a better pair if scissors)

Thanks so much ✨ it's Finisterre, thank you!
The mobile is amazing, you guys! But…does Joubert ever spend time out of your arms??❤❤❤❤😂. So adorable!
Or homemade chicken noodle soup 👍
Why do you go about the cold. Its not, if you keep your fire in
We explain why the fire's not lit during the video 🙂
I was wondering if you have a carbon monoxide detector in the boat
Yup we do, it's also required as part of the boat safety scheme
