Purdue had come within a whisker of beating UCLA the previous season in the inaugural game at Mackey Arena. Add to that UCLA’s poor game in the semifinals versus Drake and the sportswriters in their Sunday morning columns overwhelmingly picked Purdue in this game.
But Lew Alcindor wasn’t having it, playing the best game ever in a championship game (significantly better than Bill Walton’s ‘73 performance.) Lew hit 15 of 20 shots, and seven of nine free throws m, and his defense shut down Mount and Purdue.
Against Drake, he was the only Bruin who played well. Lew proved his worth once again.
I met Freedom Hall announcer John Tong in the ‘90s and said his strongest memory of his long career was saying “Goal by Alcindor” so many times that day.

Rick Mount was some shooter. He had a good career in the ABA with the Indiana Pacers.

Sadly, they didn't. 😪😦😥 But, it was still a great run, just like in '69.
