4 Tips Summary 1. Pick a playlist of songs to listen 2. Pick a scenic location to run 3. Have a buddy to run with 4. Trust the process of your body is going to feel and look great!
1. It's like using song you love as an alarm clock. You will start to hate it. 2. You will start to hate said location 3. Yes, that a great one. 4. That doesn't change the pain and agony
Nice advice, started running and finding it tricky to gauge my pace - think I'm going too fast as have a fast-runners physique, tend to run OK for a while but then my legs give and have to fast walk for 20-30s to get it back. Currently getting back to my PB of 26 min 5k.
I remember a great run that I did in the rain. I was training for my first marathon. And it was a Saturday before the race and I did 22 miles straight without stopping. I would slow down a little when I grabbed my GU and my water. But that got me so psyched for the race. I LOVE RUNNING IN THE RAIN. And matchbox 20 is one of my faves so good choice
Thanks Holly. Great advice......again 👏👏👏 Adaptation doesn’t happen quickly but it does happen. There’s absolutely no shame in walk breaks. We’re still out there moving. 👌
Tbh, music was the one thing that always killed my runs. I prefer listening to podcasts or just my thoughts (when it was a rough day at school (I‘m a teacher)) to keep the tempo which still lets me breathe :). Besides that, those are some nice tips. To me, running at my own pace, even if it’s very slow in the beginning, was the key to sticking with running and to get into it again and again (I don‘t run in summer).
Hello...I was an XC and Track runner im the spring. I was always on the heavier side and never really competed but recently I've crossed 190lbs (170 was my running weight) and am trying to get back. I've never enjoyed running and now without a team it feels impossible. I never saw improvements in my running either. What should I do?
I started running again after a few months off. What I struggle with right now is getting my stamina and endurance back but I push myself a little more each time I run. And my upcoming Chicago marathon has been motivating me!

Great article, but it there are more “fun” things you can do … in no particular order … Fartlek - every now and then on a long run with friends shout “Go” and run as fast as you can … generally for a short distance, like the top of a small hill. Splashy - Run through puddles … it really surprises non-runners, particularly if they are currently trying to make sure that their small child does not splash in the puddles. Conkers - this is a bit tricky … In the UK we get quite a lot of fallen horse chestnuts “conkers” en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Conkers in the autumn (fall). These can roll for a long way, so if you are on a downhill section, kick one in front of you and try and keep up with it
What would you suggest for someone who has asthma? I try to get going, but find myself walking more often than not, and huffing my inhaler by the end. I've heard it gets better after a while, but so far, it's still the same.
Walk/running is a great place to start! You could try walking 1 minute, running easy 1 minute for 20 minutes and then eventually start increasing the amount of time you're running!
Understood! If you can stick with it and use the time for your thoughts, stress release, or even to spend time with a friend (new running buddy), you'll start to love it! Promise :)
Boredom is a thinking meme, a repetition of the same thought. If you don’t want to be bored, take your thinking somewhere else. Shift your focus to an aspect of your present situation. Maybe your surroundings, the way your arms are in synch with your legs, your breathing in synch with everything else, etc. I’m sure you get the picture. Running is as much, if not more so, a mental exercise as it is a physical one. Holly’s advice is great. Our bodies & our minds are adapting. I’m 64 & I love running & find it sad to see my, even younger friends & colleagues, bodies & minds deteriorating as I flourish. Please lose the term “boring” from your vocabulary as it doesn’t serve anybody well. Let it go & savour your run instead. 👍
You should try trail running ... that's never boring. If you choose the right trail, then every few minutes you will get a new view, a change in terrain, an easier bit, a harder bit, some mud ... chance to stop and eat some berries ... chance to stop and admire the view ...

I have learned that the best tip is to run slower! I always thought I have to run a fast pace and ended up feeling awful and hating running even more.
Let your mind wander when you run, a lot of my good ideas in my life come about on a run 👍👍👍

Prepping this for school

Try a walk-run strategy until you can get more comfortable with breathing during exertion! If you need to slow down, by all means do it!
And get some Brooks Levitate shoes!
20-30mins in the beginning? I'm pretty new and I can barely run for 20mins non-stop...

Thx Holly
Jeff Morris you bet!
the camera is so smooth lol
Broke my headphones and affected my "fun" run huhuhi
Sameeeeee
What beat pr minutes music do you recommend?
There is actually a feature on Spotify that will match a beat to your preferred cadence on any song!
I'd aim to start around 80-90 steps per leg per minute and work from there!
My problem is it gets boring
