- This is the first winter I've spent at my little house in the woods, and it's proven to have it's challenges. But it's okay! I'm learning and adapting, and figuring things out for the next round (:
I also got the chance to finally use the ice rink! It also had it's set backs, but we had a blast enjoying what we could of it; here's to ironing out the kinks next year!

I know I'm late but I just wanted to say that I have dealt with manic depression since I was thirteen and nothing has ever motivated me to get things done like your videos do. I am able to watch you and think to myself "let's just try to get one thing done like Hannah!" and it ends up letting me get way more done too. Anyways you're just such a lovely person and I so appreciate your videos. 🤍

My father used to build us a skating rink every year. He found that building the ice in thin mist like layers made the ice solid with no air pockets and holes in it.
Yeah! There were conflicting theories I read online, but I’m thinking I’ll try that next year!
You had an amazing dad. I did too,but he was gone way too much. Mother was there,but she had ot of hidden pain. Seems nothingcould hide from me,but i tried to fix it and be a child,doesn't work well. But oh how i respect them,and havedeep lovefor them,always,and forever.

Your roof needs to be insulated more than walls to keep the warm side warm and cold side cold. Also a vapour barrier to keep the heat from escaping. I live in Yukon. We get lots of snow lately. Winter always a struggle.
Where do I find a man to yell “you look beautiful babe” at me while I’m shoveling snow and ice off my roof?! Hannah you are setting seriously high expectations for my life that idk if I can achieve 😭
If snow is melting on your roof, there are two possibilities: the external temperature is rising, or your roof is not enough insulated from inside.
Insulation. Lack of, and lack of ventilation along the underside of the roof. If the roof angle has been incorporated into the build, there will need to be better care of the shingles due to heat transfer through the roof. Snow can be an insulating blanket, but if there is a heat transfer to that snow, it will melt.
She's learning the hard way, but so did I.
It’s definitely insulation! I haven’t had time to get to roofing since moving in (I’ve only lived here a year!) but I plan to prioritize it this summer 😊♥️
@@hannahleeduggan I lived in S Lake Tahoe for almost 20 years, girl when I found Heat Tape for my roof/gutter edges……. Saved Me form hours of roof cleaning and no more fear of ice cycles forming damaging the roof. Doesn’t use much electricity either and I bet they have improved a ton since back then it was in 1980-1990’s.😂😂😂🤦♀️🤪🤓

Also lesson for ice rink. Build the ice in layers a couple of mm a time and it should stop the air pockets which cause it to collapse. Get yourself a mini gas powered snow blower as well as it would make life a lot easier making snow paths etc.

As a Minnesotan who lived way too many years battling ice dams, they are crazy hard to deal with. One particular winter, we went away for a week and came back to ice dam hell. I filled panty hose with salt melt and laid them over the dams to create a channel to let the water drain off. And it worked but not before the water did go up under the shingles and we got water in the house. They are a frigging nightmare. Good luck and keep up with the raking. And definitely get some insulation. ❤️
Glad to know I’m not alone 😭 plan is to fix up the roof this summer and get those heat cords placed along the edges so I don’t have to worry about it next year!

You can get heated wires for the ends of your roof so you won’t get ice dams! Definitely a good investment if you get bad winters or a lot of snow constantly

So much respect for people who live in snow. In CA you don’t think about bringing in he hose for winter or all the other things to survive. It’s beautiful though. I’m so happy you have Matt. He seems like your kindred spirit!
The only reason I know about ice dams is that I’ve watched a ton of This Old House. Lots of attic insulation and modern roofing materials greatly decrease the chances of it occurring. As for the ice rink, the ground warming up underneath is melting it from the underside. Ice rinks are poured on top of sand. If you put down pond liner and sand next year it might do better.
I keep forgetting how long winter last in your area, here in Florida it’s hot and sunny all year long except for hurricane season. I would love to live in your area for about a month. Having said that your property and cabin is gorgeous ❤️❤️❤️. Thank you once again for another great video and I am so glad to see you again. It’s not always hot and sunny here in Florida. We get about a month of cold weather in February.
To make a good ice rink, you need to build up layers of ice by adding water across the whole thing a little bit at a time. Filling it with water like a pool isn't the way.

I think some independence is healthy and agree that he’s a big cutie pie, especially personality wise. Everyone is very protective of Hannah and that’s sweet, but it must be like dating a girl with a thousand dads for Matt 😆

@@maconmccoy probably because they’re fairly new. He lives many hours away (at least, I think that’s what she said) so I think buying property closer to her is already a big commitment.
I used to be a competitive figure skater for 15 years, haven’t been on the ice in 2 years now. Watching you two have fun while skating brought back a lot of fun memories. I’ll have to find time to get out again!

Ice dams have been a particular problem this year in southern Ontario too this is the first year I’ve ever had to deal with it so it might not actually have been part of your childhood experience

Glad winter is coming to an end
Winter is hard but spring is SO close now. Currently we are tapping trees for sap and syrup making. It's the best way to round out the end of a long winter, keeps you busy and before you know it. BOOM. Spring.

I'd love to see a video about living in a cabin things you have to have on hand. Like your gear (clothes/shoes), the roof shovel, propane, etc. I'm moving to Alaska (from California! Going to be a weather shock for sure lol) and watching this video I learned so much haha. And you're such a handy and clever person so I'm sure you would have good recommendations/advice for anyone :)

I've always lived in Australia so I've only seen snow a couple of times when I've gone skiing. I know you say its hard but damn its beautiful. I wish I could experience a full winter in snow like that just once in my life

I live in the tropics and the amount of work it takes to simply exist in the snow looks exhausting. That being said, it's so insanely beautiful and the ice skating looks magical. I love seeing your winter vids because it takes me back to my childhood and out of reality and I love that 💕

For as young as you are it makes me smile seeing our young generation as yourself enjoying life and nature and not getting involved in the negativity of the world. God had put us on a beautiful earth to enjoy and has truly furnished us all with all we need to live. This just proves you can live a beautiful life even from your own vehicle and a small cabin out in the woods. Watching your videos and with the soulful music and time time beautiful singing and dancing truly relaxes me and opens my eyes to not stress over stupid things and to keep toxic out of my life. It keeps your feet warm. My mom taught me that! First generation Canadian I am. Both parents from Canada. Learned a lot about keeping warm threw them. Seriously try the black pepper. It really works!

Last winter 🥶 during Texas Arctic blast I had ice damming on two parts of my roof. My roof is still not fixed. I had my roof leak in two places, 2 pipes burst, and my ceiling cave in, in two places. It’s been a year and a month still going through construction. Love your videos. I have a migraine today. It made me smile. Y’all are too cute 🥰. Blessings and Peace ✝️❤️
Hannah the fastest way of getting the snow off the roof is to get a moderately strong rope and a plastic 50ml bottle. Fill the bottle with water and leave it overnight to freeze. Tie rope to bottle. Throw bottle over roof. One person either side of rope and hacksaw underneath snow across roof and snow will slough off the roof. Do that with all the roof. Should take no time or energy at all.
So wait, use a hacksaw to pull snow off the roof? Sounds like it’d tear up your roof

Little helpful advice for warming up your truck faster in winter and cooling it faster in summer. Open your driver window a half inch and turn heat/AC on full blast. It'll push the cold/ hot air out and heat it up faster inside. You can feel the air rushing out the window from outside. It helps!

Hannah, You're such a trooper dealing so cheerfully with all the obstacles of living in the north. I love your devotion to the magical little ice rink. Way to go learning to spin, Matt. I grew up in rural Wisconsin and skated every day in the winter but I never learned to spin. The little house for sale is a great find and though I hope the other buyer doesn't get it, i like seeing you two living together at your place so either way is good.

FYI, when your making your rink and you just want a nice finish fill a 45 gallon drum with water and tip it over to flood the rink makes nice finish
Girl get yourself some cast iron pans and start cooking on the wood stove! It will save you a ton on propane when you're already heating the house with the stove. Cast iron is the best (healthiest) to cook with. Plus, it will last your whole life with proper care. I have all cast iron now and love it for everything from making sourdough bread, to stir fry, pies, you name it!
