I knew I was in trouble when it booted up Wires X. I appreciate your video and your pain. I'm a Mac user, totally lost with Windows. I'll be back as soon as I can figure out why I only see Wires X. Thanks Bob.....
I always keep all my hardware's firmware update to date, including non-ham bs. Never had a problem and I have a lot of gadgets. It doesn't take much effort. So I typically do it for security reasons, which doesn't apply yo ham crap, so I understand not doing it for the additional features. I learning other crap, so i welcome new features. software dork here. great video! thanks!
Thanks for showing this bob. Ive had my ftm 400xdr for 2 1/2 years now. I might stay with current firmware as its working. The wires x feature without the need for extra items does seem tempting. 73 bob!
Thanks again for the videos Bob, firmware 4.5 is now installed. It wasn't that bad even for a techno challenged knuckle dragger like me.. 73 Mike N2MWL
I don't use an SD card. I have the RT System software and save my settings and info there. Only use the 400 at home and not in car. In New York City they are ticket crazy and will try to find a way to give you a ticket in your car. Supposedly as a ham i am exempt but that is not guaranteed.
Hi B Hi Bob. WELL DONE. For us old timers... them here computers are an invention of the Devil. Its why I got the FT 300D, she is a little easier and less likely to give us a free heart attack !!!! Smart move to get a dedicated PC for this..... SMART ! Who says"old dogs can learn new tricks??" Bob..... keep up the GOOD WORK. Yr Channel is appreciated !!! De EI7II Albert.
Handy video! Now that if has been a while, how is your little computer working out for you? I'm a mac man and looks like I may need to purchase something like yours to do the same thing and run mainly run "Chirp". What model is the one you purchased? Thx....H²
??? What’s all the talk of bricking? Do these things often brick, or just drama? Is this more difficult than any other device firmware update? Need to buy a separate PC to have next to Radio? I seem to recall that firmware can be updated by the SD Chip method, but not sure. Either way, this video did not instill confidence. Back to the manual.
Maybe this will fix mine. The b band was silent. I did a factory reset. Now its just extremely low volume. I really don't wanna mail it back. Thanks for the video.
With the small laptop, have you had any issues with program windows going off of the screen yet? I've found with some programs you lose the ability to get to some options because of the smaller screen resolution. Wondering if you've found that with any of the ham radio programs as we run many of the same ones. I currently have an older laptop dedicated to ham radio that is a monster and looking to get a little one like that as well. Have a great weekend sir.
A ten" Dell® school laptop. About 70 dollar referb. Does the honors for me. And windows 7® does just fine. Had it from via Amazon a new York state group had them for sale. Good folks tks. Baofeng and a host of others(chirp) kv4li
I've been wanting to ask if y'all ever pick a spot on HF bands and try to contact all your youtube fans? can make it a challenge between all the other youtube people and y'all make a contest out of it you each have you're own channel and they must say a specific word of your choosing and you score a point losers buy winner a case of beer or something
Thanks. I want to buy a new Yaesu but heard the updating was a pain. It is a breeze. Thanks. So now, where to find girls like that in your intro? I have spare time now.
Every time I try a firmware update on something, I take stock on how much I care about losing that device. Brave man to do it live on video.
I feel ya.

Hi Bob. I enjoy your videos. I’m purchasing a FTM 400XDR and wondering best low cost tablet for Mobil ops to display APRS mapping?
TIA. Eric
Is there a way to check your firmware version prior to pulling it out? I purchased mine from HRO two weeks ago
Yes, in the reset/clone menu, at the top it will show you the current main and panel versions.

So, ftm 400 or ftm 300 knowing what you know about both these radios which would u buy?
I just got a FTM 400XD a couple weeks ago. Good radio, but not as user friendly as my Icom 5100A.

Very good. I wander if I need to update my ftm 400 in my Jeep? I got it very early on. I guess I need to go check version # huh. Lol

N3VL is what it should have said lol
If you have Linux Wine64 + Winetricks64 + ZIP.dll and you could run any Windows applications that you could want to run.
Maybe this will fix mine. The b band was silent. I did a factory reset. Now its just extremely low volume. I really don't wanna mail it back. Thanks for the video.
Are you running an external speaker?
You have probably already checked this, but you don't have APRS Mute enabled do you? That will mute your B Band.
Is this same on ftm300?

What did the update change or add to the radio?
The ability to run WiresX without an HRI 200 and an update to the GM functions. There's probably a few other things I havn't found yet.
Is there a new firmware??
4.4 main & 1.3 panel

Windows is just like the Apple - junk. They need to rename Apple to BMW, everything is just to expensive for Apple.
