I'm a musician and everything you said about skating I can really relate to regarding performing, practicing and writing music. My teacher actually recommended me to find a hobby I didn't feel like needing to be the best at, and that's when skating comes into play.
I've been dipping my feet into rollerblading for the past month so I finally got my real free skating pair and had my first actual practice session yesterday. I'm not gonna lie, this is the best fun I've had,and it's very weird to say but from a certain point onwards, falling felt good. I don't know how I can describe it but at one point, I fell flat on my ribcage. I somehow didn't hurt myself, I wasn't going very fast. But I did find myself giggling. It was therapeutic, and very new

Enjoyed the narration, Bill. I feel this in my own way, but I also find that it's refreshing when you learn how to also skate for the purpose of gauging (and accepting) where you are rather than always looking at what you WANT to be. Truth is, we will never be enough for ourselves, so we have to learn how to appreciate where we are sometimes. Cheers, and happy skating!

The most perfect reply (and it was the very first one I read) from the man who inspired my skating the most, to date. I've come quite a way in the two years since taking skating back up again, but NOW I fully understand what you just said there, where I wouldn't have not long ago.
      You are SO right!
And I have learned to appreciate where I am, but that doesn't stop me from trying new things.
And I just love Bill's concept here. I went out for two outings today (3 to 4 hours combined), and I STILL didn't get enough. It wasn't FUN! LOL ;)

Very honest. Skating can be a headf*ck. For me, as an old starter, the issue is fear. Fundamental fear, pure and simple. It means I'll never achieve many of the skills I'd love to. But occasionally you just have to let some things go. Then I remind myself that I'm skating, and that it's amazing, and that in itself is a win.

I felt that first part “uhhhh, I suck” same! Like the Adapts, great skates. Everything you mentioned is relatable. I’ve always looked at skating as 75% Mental & the other 25% is the physical aspect/abilities, especially when it comes to Aggressive inline & Urban free skating, traversing obstacles, gaps, ledges or whatever it may be. We all have our days where nothing seems to go right, we’re all going to fall no matter how skilled you are. It’s crazy to think we endure all this physical & mental pain, only to lace up & get back out for more! Skating teaches a lot of great attributes along with mental perseverance, which can be applied to everything in life. It’s so much more than the non skater may realize. I love it!

I call these ‘Bambi’ sessions, where you feel a bit like Bambi trying to stand the ice and, at the end, you question what the f&@k you’re even doing!
I try to take the positives from each session - what did I do well on this one? The negatives serve as a reminder that I can never allow myself to become complacent, and that I should always seek to maintain my current level and aim for gradual improvements along the way.
I also recall how invaluable it was to see the top guys (guys like you, Bill) fumble every now and then; not that I wanted to see you fall, it just made my own bails easier to cope with when I realised it happens to literally everyone.
Thanks for sharing, Bill. Skate safe, Bother! 👊

Everyone is always so hard on themselves. They see who they want to be and not who they are. I can tell you that you will always see yourself differently than other people do because you will immediately see your own faults. Everybody loves the way you skate. I can’t honestly tell you how many times I’ve been in the rink feeling awful about myself and a group of kids or somebody random comes up and tells me they love the way I skate. I’m sure you’ve had your fair share of compliments as well. Those compliments are real. Don’t be so hard on yourself. Anybody who actually skates sees and understands how good you are and the effort and dedication you have put into what you do. I’ve been skating for 5 years now and when I started I watched your videos which helped me learn quite a lot. You were the bomb (and still are) and the way you skated absolutely blew my mind and has helped pave the way for me and many others. You are a legend. Remember that.

That was beautiful Bill, hits hard with me and it’s cliche to say ‘I needed this right now’ but I did! Having broken a fibula and ankle the last year, and getting back to it finally has been tough. I hate it and love it at the same time, starting all over again-- my skates definitely transfer over into other areas of my life, make me feel better, or worse. I won’t stop though, I’ll keep getting up and going because of the challenge, it’s how I’m built. I wish I had more skaters here to play with. There are plenty of quad skaters- I’m not knocking them, but it’s not the same at all so I’m always solo. Anyway, the broken bones and tar rash I see in the mirror remind me of discipline, and that I can do better, and will never stop trying to. It does suck, but I love it? Attempting for impossible perfection via masochism? I don’t know, but I do know I loved this video, it’s probably one of my favorites outside of first discovering you on here. Thanks Bill! 🤘🏻

This is so so so important! Thank you so much for sharing this! as a novice skater who's trying to learn the ropes, its really refreshing to have someone of your skill talk so candidly. Its easy for people such as myself to watch your videos and kick themselves over and again because i feel like im not progressing at the rate i should be, or that i want to be. And being that i love skating, i enjoy filling my spare time watching your videos. They fill me with happiness, excitement, eagerness and motivation! But I also cant help but also feel envy, frustration, annoyance, because you make it look so easy. and in my lay-brain i think "Its so easy, why cant i do things like that" "If its so simple to execute this move then why do i keep falling on my ass every time i try it! Its this video and videos like it, that show that, its not easy, it is hard and you wont be able to just go out and do it. and even for the top skaters, for the skaters who i admire most, YOU, Bill, its difficult! Thank you again so much for this insight! This has filled me with even more motivation to improve my skating and overcome all these little challenges we all face!

“…got much to learn…” dang it! Then so do I! I’ve skated since the 90s. But started to do it more often in the past year. Never really forgotten but still need to learn. Just a week ago I cracked my ribs, small concussion, and tore some ligaments in my knee and wrist. And I was not aggressive skating. Was trying a new move and BANG face plant on the floor. Would have been an awesome and funny vid. But I got up and skated again with pain. Next day I was so fu***!
Thanks for sharing the ups and downs. Can’t wait to get better and skate again. ✌️

When I skated years ago I never fell and although I’d go hard and fast I wasn’t doing very risky tricks. Building my legs back up now and it’s hard to say Im usually enjoying it let alone having “fun” but there is something satisfying about it. Hopefully I can learn a couple more tricks this time but I doubt I’ll ever be as bold as you are… still, each to their own, we all take from it something slightly different and I can just watch your videos to live vicariously through your flow. This was a well made video with a bit more drama than the others Ive watched. Nice narrative and the changes in the colour grade, music and cuts worked well.

Today (7AM) was my WORST day!! 1st hard fall and feeling every bit of it!! After beginning to feel like a HERO for switching to a 3x110 setup (used to have 4x80 back in the day) and feeling somewhat comfortable in two weeks, today I feel like a ZERO! This vid, at this time, (just happened) inspires me to get back at it. Today was a humbling reminder that there is much to learn and to keep trying. Even those we look up to and admire have rough days and I appreciate u for sharing. Hurt like hell right now, but plan to skate later tonight if I can manage the pain!!😖🤣

Sometimes the simple ride from A to B is the beauty. Nice weather and nice ambience outperforms the craziest trick most of the time. I enjoy your videos. Inline is one of my sports as well, beside longboarding and snowboarding. I noticed if I stuck with one trick or one vision, change to the other sport, do your standards, enjoy and then return. The best way to have fun while skating is to skate with having fun in mind. You are not here to break the records or break the bones. You are here to have fun. You are here to feel good and stay healthy. Don't rush anything. This video is a great example of how a good skater forgets the proper technique when tired or frustrated. This is when the bad things start to happen.

To hear someone so skilled like you saying to yourself stuff like "I suck" only motivates me more... Watching the pros feel like this only puts a big smile in my face because that makes me feel more connected to them... I no longer feel frustrated (and strangely motivated) by the unreachable level of talent portrayed on most of their videos but the real side. I mean, if even the pros can fail some times there is no reason why I, an average dude with no way near the levels of fitness, experience, dedication and discipline could not fail way more often than you. You know what? Your video just motivated me to go take my skates and try to attempt the line I have been trying to do without success for weeks. Bye.

Really enjoyed the candid narration and reading through the comments. A lot of humility, ambition and willingness to improve at a cost. My two cents here are little bit more tactical. I would advocate for safety gear, especially the knee pads and helmet, regardless of skater’s level. I’m in my thirties now and one day without them can cost me long healing injuries. Although pads decrease comfort and could restrain movement a little, they also increase confidence and chance of walking away from a fall unscathed. End of the day, we can be pretty fragile and limiting that factor by wearing safety gear allows me to focus more on learning new skills and tricks.

You're right though, skating can be frustrating, especially when trying new things.
The positivity of the session needs to flow, or you can't.
Thanks for showing, that it's not all sunshine and rainbows. It takes hard work and determination, to improve, and learn to skate well.

That's how I used to feel about my surfing. Although I've surfed for over 20+ years I started late in life (at age 28). So I don't think I've developed my skills to their fullest compared to if I had started at a much younger age when the body and mind are more flexible. Sure, I can hold my own but I'll never be able to shred like the young rippers at the local lineup ... but that's ok. Once I learned to accept my limitations I became aware of things I never appreciated before just from sitting on my board:
"Wow! Check out that pod of dolphins"
    "Geez that's a huge pelican!"
"Dude, this seal is getting a little too friendly"
"Ahhh that breeze ... that breeze ... feels sooo good"
That's when surfing became more than just technical maneuvers for me, it became something I just do because it makes me feel good. It became part of me. Some days I surf poorly and other days I surf great but even the worst surfing day beats the best day sitting at the office (at least for me).

I thought I was listening to a story, the narration was so beautiful, well you inspire me, today I went skating properly, what I mean by that I found a place in Sydney that is mostly flat and I can do some laps nothing challenging, just getting back into it. I did not have a great start, I had an aggregate official tell me the Law ( illegal to skate in parking lots, yes I have to be afraid of parked cars, here in Auz they seem to love telling one-off, I do not like it here ) I apologised and looked for another place and found one and skated for an hour, going home was uphill and now I am paying for it, my back so score, if like 100 years old. Lots of new places in Toronto, where about is that bridge, I miss Toronto,

Ouch, those falls make me hurt too! Been thinking of you! Saw places you took us on your skates, like the overpass park, while watching live streamers cover the marches. I was hoping to see you skating in the background making a video - that would've been so cool!
What did you think of Ottawa? I was hooked on those live streamers, and it was fun watching them cross the streams when they ran into each other! That time and place was the closest to heaven I've ever seen, people were so nice and fun loving!
Take care of yourself! You sure speak the truth on this - i can relate. See you next time!!

Inline skating does have it's positive and negative effects. I love how it gives you that 2 hour window freedom of everyday stress, anxiety, and even depression problems that we all go through. It can be frustrating at times when your not achieving your plan out goals or the harassment you get from Mr. Policeman, because your taking up to much street space or some other stupid reason. Hang in there and thanks for sharing your a inspiration to us all and enjoy the Undercover wheels there one my favorites too. 😉

@@BillStoppard I've just recovered from my recent fall.
Have had right wrist sprained and left knee hit hard.
I'm familiar with the pain if you ask.
Have had broken bones, fractured bones, sprained ankles and wrists and some more painful experiences that don't want to remember.
I've learned throughout my own pain that the longer you focus on pain and injuries the more painful and stressful it gets. So I just have some laughter and keep myself busy with anything that makes me feel good and happy whilst recovering.
      Stay well and happy.

@@BillStoppard perhaps I've got a different perception of your experience.
You see even when the thing is the same, people get different experience of it. Best example is the weather, you can see people dressed up different and giving you different feedback about it even though the temperature is the same, etc.
To answer your question I smile most of my life.
Even when I hit a bollard with my ribcage while skate at Sainsburys car park, I just chuckle because laugh was a bit too much of a pain as one rib has fractured, and sneezing was another painful reminder while I was recovering. Why is that?
      1. Don't fear anything or anyone.
      2. It already happened (crash, accident, etc.), you can either cheer yourself up or get upset.
      3. I've had enough of painful experiences that teaches how to deal with it.
      4. When you wake up in emergency room and question yourself how did you ended up there also puts things in different perspectives.
Everyone tolerate pain differently, some can handle more pain some less.
What I take away from your video is this:
Even for the best of us mistakes happens.
      Best wishes,
      Stay well and happy.

Given that in the past 2 weeks I was hit by car that passed a red light (it was slow so no damage), almost hit by another doing a illegal turn and yet another crossing yet another red light in a city where you are always challenged by sharing awful surfaces with a huge number of people that pay more attention to their phones then their surroundings, yes! Finding motivation lately is "complicated".

I haven’t been on skates in almost 30 years. Just picked up some 3 wheelers on ebay for a great deal. Got some 110s (power slide swell bolt 3d blabla) for around $200 and they felt awkward and they were a touch big so I got the same skates but in the 100mm version for $120 both new… they fit better and they felt better when I put them on. Instantly felt familiar (on carpet tho).. so I guess it’s time to step outside!… I have an awesome border collie and I hope he’ll like it as much as I will. I can’t wait to have some thrilling skates in the near future! Have raced Mtb/road bikes, and race 200mph motorcycles so I hope it’ll be fast enough. There’s a world known hill nearby if I wanna do 70 mph on em😂😂. Done it on a bike and it was scary enough. I feel safer at 200 on a moto. 🍻. Stay feeling young forever!

I’ve been athletic all my life, and I’ve reached that ‘jaded’ point many times throughout. Most times, the reasons were burnout, boredom, or simply life’s random distractions.
During those moments, I’ve learned to dial down my intensity to 80% rather than going ‘all out’.
By simply dialing down a notch, I would naturally ease myself back into my sport(s) 100% when I felt focused, motivated, and well-rested.
Sometimes, you (body, mind, and spirit) just needs a moment to cruise along - allowing for everything in your inner athletic being to re-sync/calibrate.
I find these ‘cruising’ periods to be essential to tackling new goals and milestones, as it allows my mind, body and spirit to catch up.
After which, it’s ‘Ready. Set. Go!’ …In the most literal sense.
Keep rolling and ‘stay low’. 😎
