    Stalag 17 is a classic! I am only 16 and this is one of my favorite movies ever! The great escape was great but I like this movie alot more. William Holden brought so much to this movie! Some of my friends say its gay to like black and white movies but I dont care this movie is just too great! Oh and ANIMAL RULES!!!

    Excellent scene. As they all join in and sing an very old American song the spy is revealed to the audience and he has the gall to join in like a good patriotic American boy. It makes you despise him even more. Peter Graves gives a very good performance as the spy. So good it actually hampered his career.

  • @jpgiuliotti
    @jpgiuliotti 11 лет назад +71

    Absolutely. I just love the steely coldness and minimal movement of Peter Graves (Price) while he reveals the real treachery going on in the barracks. The timing of the cord pull down, Joey's slow turn to look at him after the crowd marches by is like: "What did you just do Price?" and Holden's (Sefton) notice of the now swinging shadow to the backdrop of the rallying music is so wonderful and quintessential Billy Wilder!

    • @stevekaczynski3793
      @stevekaczynski3793 4 года назад +5

      I had no impression Joey spotted anything, Price does make sure Sefton is not looking before he checks the hollow chess queen. That Sefton notices something about the light cord is clearly telegraphed, however.

    • @jpgiuliotti
      @jpgiuliotti 4 года назад +5

      @@stevekaczynski3793 It's not so much Joey actually suspects anything or saw anything - because he didn't. It's more the (artistic?) choice of having the disassociated, cognitively-challenged guy be the one to look at Price after the audience is made aware that he is now the bad guy while the other POWs are blissfully unaware and reveling. It struck me as a nice subtle choice in the whole framing of the "reveal" scene. Thanks for your insightful comment! :)

    • @stevekaczynski3793
      @stevekaczynski3793 4 года назад +8

    • @AA-sn9lz
      @AA-sn9lz 3 года назад +3

      @@stevekaczynski3793 what does it mean, "clearly telegraphed"? You mean, for the sake of plot? I don't think so. I think it was completely in character with Sefton. From thw beginning, he knew something was wrong, and was more wise to it than the rest of the sergeants. Then when they suspected him and even beat him up, his vigilance only strengthened.

    Price is a German spy put in the American POW barracks, he is passing messages to the German guards through a hallow chess piece, he ties a loop in the light wire to alert the guards that there is a new message. The guy laying in bed just got beat by the other men because they thought he was the spy. When I was a kid Stalag 17 was my Dad's favorite movie, when it came out on VHS he'd watch it all the time. Just because he wasn't doing much to help the men in Barracks 4 doesn't mean he wasn't watching for anything out of the ordinary. He knew something screwy was going on since the start of the movie like all the other men, they just weren't as focused like he was because the Germans kept out witting them with the spy. And this is where he picks up the scent (The light) and became more suspicious when he saw the loop again later in the evening.

    My favourite scene in all of cinema 🎥. Someone starting to figure something out without the use of technology and instead from/with simple observation.

      Yeas great scene, a classic. His eyes, just look at his eyes. Those eyes say it all. I watch this film at least once a year. It never gets old.

      Yea, this was loaded with humorous characters. Great movie but in this particular scene the director should not have had Holden look up at the swinging light bulb. He should have ended the scene with the reposing Holden staring at the shadow. The reason I say this is because when he gets up on his elbow and turns around to view the bulb directly it is readily apparent to a discerning audience that there was no light or window behind the bulb to project the shadow that Holden initially saw. When Johnny Comes Marching was not just a Rebel song but the Yankees sang it also during the War Of Northern Aggression. (and I'm not a Rebel; I'm from NY)

    When Johnny Comes Marching Home Again,
    Hurrah! Hurrah!
    We'll give him a hearty welcome then
    Hurrah! Hurrah!
    The men will cheer and the boys will shout
    The ladies they will all turn out
    And we'll all feel gay,
    When Johnny comes marching home.
    Get ready for the Jubilee,
    Hurrah! Hurrah!
    We'll give the hero three times three,
    Hurrah! Hurrah!
    The laurel wreath is ready now
    To place upon his loyal brow
    And we'll all feel gay
    When Johnny comes marching home.
    Let love and friendship on that day,
    Hurrah! Hurrah!
    Their choicest treasures then display,
    Hurrah! Hurrah!
    And let each one perform some part
    To fill with joy the warrior's heart,
    And we'll all feel gay
    When Johnny comes marching home.
    When Johnny Comes Marching Home Again,
    Hurrah! Hurrah!
    We'll give him a hearty welcome then
    Hurrah! Hurrah!
    The men will cheer and the boys will shout
    The ladies they will all turn out
    And we'll all feel gay,
    When Johnny comes marching home.
    And we'll all feel gay,
    When Johnny comes marching home.
    “Hurray!!”
    When Johnny Comes Marching Home Again,
    Hurrah! Hurrah!
    We'll give him a hearty welcome then
    Hurrah! Hurrah!
    The men will cheer and the boys will shout
    The ladies they will all turn out
    And we'll all feel gay,
    When Johnny comes marching home.
    Lalalala la la la…
    When Johnny Comes Marching Home Again,
    Hurrah! Hurrah!
    We'll give him a hearty welcome then
    Hurrah! Hurrah!
    The men will cheer and the boys will shout
    The ladies they will all turn out
    And we'll all feel gay,
    When Johnny comes marching home.
