  • The word "Tetradrachm" is brings a smile to the face of any coin collector.
    A wide, heavy, impressive piece of silver on which the ancient kings and emperors would put their image and their messages on bold displays of artistry.
    From the earliest Tetradrachm struck around 500bc to the very last struck around 290ad, it would be impossible to squeeze so much information in one video, so this will be a new series on the channel. Welcome, to the Tetradrachm!

    The Akanthos and the first Owl are simply sublime. That transitional period of owl is brief and the art is superior. Love the Archaic owls too !

    I have been looking for a Tetradrachm for a while.
    They are plentiful and they keep finding hoards. Somebody recently found a hoard in Turkey with a special German metal detector. It was buried 17 feet underground.
    But it’s hard to find one that has a full or even mostly full crest of the Athenian helmet. A lot of them were off-center. A lot of them are corroded. A lot of them have those unappealing chop marks.
    To get a really nice one is expensive. Even though there are millions of them around.

    Your best episode in my opinion! Would be great to follow up with another episode on ' control marks' - i have a provincially minted emperor claudius coin from hierapolis with what looks like a control mark on it, do you know if this was still common practice so many hundreds of years later?

    • @ClassicalNumismatics
      @ClassicalNumismatics  2 года назад +2

      Thanks! Indeed, I need to find a collector of countermarks to do some sort of collaboration.
      And yes, countermarks on roman coins are veeery common.
      And they were done for all sorts of reasons. To validate a foreign coin for use on roman territory, to validate a coin that has been worn flat, etc.

    • @grafja

      I have a U.S. Trade Dollar from 1875 that has many beautiful graphical and Mandarin (or its equivalent at the time?) control/chop marks on it. I feel like whenever history has two large independently-formed civilizations meet for the first time and begin trade, there is always a prevailing sense of mistrust by the home state using the foreigner's currency. The U.S. Trade Dollar was ordered by Congress specifically because The East had opened for trade, yet everyone was using the Mexican silver dollar because it was a larger denomination and they got there first too. The majority of Trade Dollars went east and the chopmarks are frequent. It's a beautiful not-rare 1 oz silver coin and can be had in attractive condition for very reasonable money (similar to the new fangled machined pens) making it a great pocket companion with actual global history at the start of full-on global trade. Pretty dope if you ask me.

    test cuts add value imo (depends on the cut)

    • @ClassicalNumismatics
      @ClassicalNumismatics  3 года назад +6

      So it does for me! It means the coin actually made what it was meant to do, which is to circulate! Fortunately these seem to retract value on the market, which is all the best for us budget-conscious buyiers. There are quite a few coins on my collection I would not have been able to afford wasn't it for these test cuts giving them a "discount" :)

  • @awstick1
    @awstick1 3 года назад +1

    My first ancient coin was an Athenian Tetradrachm. It's not the best specimen as it is only in decent condition with a big test cut marring it, but it's still my favorite coin.

    Makes me wonder what's the main differences between silver staters and tetradrachms?

    • @ClassicalNumismatics
      @ClassicalNumismatics  2 месяца назад +1

      "Staters" is a more broad term for the main silver denomination of a monetary standard. "Tetradrachm" is specifically a 4-drachma piece from Greek monetary standards, or other standards that used the Greek ones as a reference.

    How much is an average Athenian Owl worth from the Classical Era?

    • @ClassicalNumismatics
      @ClassicalNumismatics  2 года назад +5

      This will greatly depend on condition, quality of the strike, etc etc.
      There is no such thing as an "average" ancient coin.
      I have made a series of videos on how to look for the right price of ancient coins and the recommended places to buy them, I recommend you take a look at them so you can make an informed purchase and not get ripped off.

    • @CleverMonster101
      @CleverMonster101 2 года назад +1

      I just bought a classical era, although it has a counter mark through the owls face, I paid 140 euros +auction fees. But like classical said, it all depends on the condition and it’s good to keep an eye on an auction site (like numisbids, or something similar) just to see how much coins sell for before making your own bids.
