I’m absolutely loving this podcast. Pablo and I were talking about how scary it is to be an artist on live a little while ago. This is really helpful for people who don’t sell their dolls yet, it’s insightful!

I really enjoyed this! We don't make dolls, we make 1/3 and 1/4 scale minatures - but use the same 3D printing tech and resins, and they are also very labor intensive. Artists get undervalued so much. We spend hours (often uncompensated) to learn and perfect our crafts. I also think about all the "fails" along the way (R&D, learning new materials, techniques, equipment and software). I hope folks who look at their future purchases learn to look at them as more than just "dolls" or "dolls stuff". Everyone deserves to be "paid" a living wage.
I think sometimes sites like Etsy are hurting us rather than helping. They convince sellers we have to be always offering discounts, coupons, sales and free shipping - and with limited face-to-face sales - we become non-entities. Folks forget that behind handmade items or art - there is a living, breathing person, doing their best. We have overhead, we have self-employment taxes, we won't mention in the US the hit for private health insurance... and supplies are getting more expensive and harder to source too! And all that just to have a small (very small $) business, but we also have the same mortgage/rent, food, gas, etc. folks do.
For me, my partner has a full time job, so I am lucky to have shelter, food and a space to create. My partner does so much and often will forego any monetary compensation to help the shop get new equipment, pay the tax accountant, and travel associated. Due to my health, I am very limited on outside work (can't be on my feet for retail, and often need a lot of days off to deal with chronic illness and such) - this keeps me "independent". Again, thank you for the very frank discussion of the Behind the Scenes of being creators!!!
Yes absolutely! Its super labor intensive and we all deserve to be able to live. If the world was perfect and I didnt have to pay for food and shelter and healthcare stuff etc, id be able to make things less expensive maybe, but artists are people deserving of necessities. I agree pushing discounts and also pushing dropshipping items over actual handmade items is turning etsy into a wasteland.

I listened to this while sanding some doll ears on a custom. It felt like hanging out in a group. Loved every second of this episode! :D
The fact that prices go up all over the world, means that people have to accept some things are now out of their price range and not take it out on the creators and all involved to make the dolls (Or any type of handmade item tbh!)
If they do not want to buy factory made things, they will have to do what everyone else does. save up! ;)
I would love an episode deep diving into resin quality vs price points, resin printers as well. where to get the deals on anything doll related without sacrificing quality. (you know, places anyone can buy from, like amazon, AliExpress etc.)
You hit some good points in this episode, even the more serious part was a good part :)

This was very informative because as a consumer it’s difficult to know what you artist go through to create the wonderful dolls you do and it makes me even moreso respect your art and business minds 😊 also Pablo you look so handsome sugar daddies better get those applications filled out 😂 and Rosie you look beautiful as always ☺️

This was such a good discussion! I feel that this hobby is a luxury and owning these dolls is a huge privilege. Artists should feel empowered to make their dolls the price they need to in order to make a living off of this (aka a living wage) and people who can buy will still buy. People who make you feel bad about your prices maybe need to re-align their perspective. 🤷♀️
yes, absolutely! All art is a luxury in todays society, and those who think its not worth a living wage should try making it themselves instead!

This is such a good video and i really hold it in high regard because in my opinion videos like this are super important when you join the bjd and sculpting hobby, video 10/10 btw and i know this is semi on and off topic but does anyone know if rose or anyone else for instance do print commissions ?? The person I was working with ghosted me after I paid them:( I'd like to have my dolls printed but I don't know how to trust

YES its all a lot of work, just different work, but not less valuable.
